Yes. Through the Civil Reserve Air Fleet, President Biden activated a number of US airlines to help with the evacuation of Afghanistan. Despite whatever people think how positive or negative the situation is, Afghans are being transported away from the new regime.

Well Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) and Danish Air Transport (DAT) did the same and where called in on (If i have understanded the danish goverment correct) an sunday and was in Islamabad on monday to first fly danes and those ho worked for Denmark and then help other danish allies go get there citizens get there people out

That's an amazing end of career for the A340, I know some will keep operating but it's sure a last years good service. As many others I sure hope they manage to deploy the A380s and 747s too, wonder where they could fly to.

Good to see. Lufthansa does a lot of humanitarian work, including an organization known as Cargo Human Care, founded by one of their cargo pilots (whom now is recently retired). The US has also activated it's Civil Reserve Air Fleet (recruited several US carriers to do similar routes from American bases to other places). It's an incredible mess, but good to see people doing what they can.

Great work from the Germany government and the airline. As an American, I wished the US would do more. I feel for all that are over there and hope for a safe and speedy evacuation for all that need to get away from a really bad situation that could have been prevented.

Good thing these "storage" aircraft had another purpose rather then being scrapped, It maybe a quad jet but the route length isn't an issue it's getting people out to safety.

My first flight in an A340 was Emirates out of Kabul. It was overbooked to blazes and I was upgraded to first, along with numerous other lucky punters. Won’t be doing that again soon :/ They weren’t that reliable and there were many cancellations.

Major US airlines are doing same as Luftansa. I know for one AA, they are flying into places after aircraft left Afghanistan. AA is bringing the Afghans to the US. Some of my friends are working the flights as crew to the US

I think Emirates can just use the entire lower decks of their A380s. Being based in close proximity to Afghanistan also helps.

The german government does excellent crisis management in these situations. Got stuck in locked down Bolivia in march 2020 and it only took a week to get a repatriation flight back to Germany. Many other countries took weeks or months to get organized.

@@aviationchannel6204 not possible. Although the AN225 can take off with the weight of 1500 passengers, it does not have the floor space to fit that many people. You can probably fit only 500-600 people. The A380 on the other hand has 2 deck and can fit 800 passengers with seats. If you remove the seats, and fill every single inch of the floor space, you could probably fit 1500 people on board, but the aircraft doesn't have the MTOW capability to take off with that many people onboard.

The only reason (I think) the Lufthansa one is mentioned is because the aircraft type (A340) is on the verge of retirement (the production of the A340 ended 10 years ago but the engines are still in production).

@@ianstewartorr8455 it’s too large and the whole operation would be unnecessarily complex and simply horrendous. At some point the usefulness of an A380 ends when being operated on certain missions. Imagine you want to move but instead of a transporter you use a tank twice the size or so, maybe the problem becomes clear
