Lufthansa vs Aegean Airlines: Which one is the 5 Star Airline?

A review of my flight with Aegean Airlines from Athens to Frankfurt (A320neo) and with Lufthansa from Frankfurt to London Heathrow (A320neo) in economy class.

I think Aegean won. The lounge and its offerings, the plane seats, onboard audio/ video options, and snacks but , at least, Lufthansa got a participation trophy.

The arrow you mentioned is the best viewing point over the wing and engine for the cabin crew or pilots if they have to check things out for any reason. Like in an emergency It’s a visual indication for them.

AegN has shown some great innovation, but their seats blow me away. Attachment for phone and tablets, what a genius idea.

As a passenger and as a flight attendant, I know both service concepts very well and flown several times with both airlines. I have to say, that AEGEAN Airlines is a true 5 -Star airline in contrast to Lufthansa. On the same flight from MUC to ATH and back, AEGEAN served us the bag with a sandwich, a bottle of water and a cake plus a second or third drink from the trolley. Lufthansa only handed out a PickUp chocolate and just one or two drinks from the trolley during the flight. Very disappointing!

It's my belief that many major European airlines - Lufthansa and British Airways to name but two, are becoming' budget' airlines with their service levels while many of the low cost carriers have stepped up their game and provide better service and value for money. The pandemic seems to have accelerated this process and it will be very interesting to see what happens when and if life returns to pre Covid levels. Aegaen has gained a good reputation and for my money wins this battle over Lufthansa

They could of at least offered the same type of catering as Aegean in their lounge, after all, if Aegean can do it, so can Lufthansa.

My big question is why not water or other drinks and how do they expect someone to spend a couple of hours in there without a drink. In the meantime right outside of the lounge there are restaurants and coffee shops open

Aegean would normally have given you a hot meal depending on time of the day you fly, but I believe due to COVID they been given out those bags with a water bottle sandwich and bar of some type.

So many different airlines. My sister and I took different flights from Thessaloniki to Munich. Hers was Aegean. Mine was Air Berlin. She had a full breakfast. I didn't even have water.....

Aegean have always been an amazing airline, but with their new livery, seats and A320/321neo they have really upped their game and look incredible! I don’t know how Lufthansa is rated 5 star, their cabins look so dull and boring, plus that lounge was bad! I’d happily fly with Aegean and can’t wait to fly their neo! 😍😍😍

Hey, first of all it was a really nice video. Regarding your questions: right now here in Germany there is a "Lockdown light" going on and a regulation of this is that restaurants and other places like Lounges can't serve any food or beverages indoors and can only give them as takeaways (and that's why it was no problem for you getting something from McDonald's). But as far as I know, Lufthansa gives prepacked food and water bottles to pax who are leaving the lounges. But somehow that wasn't the case... interesting! Oh, and btw that arrow above the windows do show where the wings start so the crew can look outside quicker and precisely in emergency situations :)

Thanks Emre, very kind of you. Not trying to make a case against Lufthansa or any other airline but I am pretty sure there were people sitting at the restaurants and cafes outside of the lounge - I don't think Germany was in lockdown at that stage. I visited the LH lounge at Heathrow a couple of months ago and they were serving pre-packed food and drinks (at least). In this case there was nothing, which was a bit shocking and confusing. @@MyTrips_Aviation Thanks for your reply. When did you fly? Because the restrictions came in effect on 2nd November. I even flew with LH (MUC-FRA A350 :D) on the 1st November and at that time they were still serving hot food and drinks (even though the selection was tiny). Fun fact I read the news of LH cancelling the service in Lounge while I was eating in the LH Business Class Lounge in Munich haha

(17:01), the arrows are an indicator (where to stand/which window to use) for flight crew to visually check the position of wing flaps. It serves as a redundant safety measure should there be a question if flaps are deployed correctly. Mainly, an Airbus feature, and not all aircraft/airlines employ.

Thank you for sharing this nice review. Lufthansa and Swiss provide since sometime a very basic service, sometimes a ridiculous service. And this even in business class. The “in the name of COVID “ excuse is just a scam to profit more from the price they charge you. Austrian is following suit with their new service concept. That's a shocker that you can't even get water in a Lufthansa lounge ... even if they have pre-packaged sandwiches or rolls and bottled water ...a lot better than nothing ... Aegean is the 5 Star here!

Skytrax gives 5 Star Airline to the ones who give them the most money, rather than really caring for its passengers. Not to mention the only 1 Star Airline Air Koryo from DPRK who apparently never gave them a penny is not that bad at all.

I fly these routes fairly often with both airlines and I agree that Aegean has the edge. The only thing I would say though is that when I book, Aegean is invariably two to three times the price of Lufthansa for business class, so now I only travel with Aegean when I can book it as part of a Lufthansa ticket, when the price is a lot more reasonable.

Thanks for the comment. Surprisingly, in my case it was the other way round regarding the ticket prices. The same ticket was sold by Lufthansa at nearly 3 times the price I got it from Aegean's website. I think though that Lufthansa sell one way tickets very expensive (compared to return ones), while Aegean allows you to purchase one way tickets at low costs. If you do get a return ticket though I agree with you that Lufthansa has better offers.

@@MyTrips_Aviation You are quite right. It is rarely worth buying a single ticket as is normally works out more expensive. But I just checked my next trip - LCA-LHR via ATH and FRA (Olympic/Aegean/Lufthansa) and it is €340 return through Lufthansa, but Aegean quoted just short of €400 just for ATH-FRA. Lufthansa business class is also regularly cheaper than Easyjet by the time you have factored in suitcases and seats!

National airlines are going by the way side now for "quality" it seems. The Lufthansa flight was just pure cost cutting. But Aegean even though smaller did not cost cut in these times. I hope they, and similar, like MEA survive. This video will be seen and people will take note so they do. People are sometimes not confident on flying a "little airline" compared to the flag carriers, which is a shame.... Excellent video and also once again nice out of window shots. Where is you tune though at the start ? I miss it

Not sure if I missed it in the video, but when were these flights? I am very surprised about the Lufthansa lounge, especially as the restaurants were open. Last time I checked Lufthansa were also still offering the normal food and beverage service in business class, so not even getting a glass of water seems ridiculous. I am due on this route in a few weeks (lockdowns permitting) but am only in FRA for 50 minutes, so won't get the opportunity to see if things have improved.

Aegean Airline of course is much much better from Lufthansa .I live in Canada and at July 2020 I flew from Toronto Canada to Frankfurt and then Frankfurt to Thessaloniki Greece both flights with Lufthansa but i was not happy at all .Very poor servise meal from Canada to Germany they gave us indian massala vegie meal only not other option then Frankfurt to Greece only water and small chocolate is not 5 star airline the German LUfthansa for sure .Aegean airline on the way back to Canada i use them from Thessaloniki Athens London fligths 2 of them amazing service they served hot meal to athens london and dessert and drinks and bottle of water free of church .Aegean is 5 star Airline .Lufthansa i mark the maybe 1 to 2 star airline not worth it really and from April 2021 lufthanca group no free meals in European routes .

Lounge in Frankfurt ist due to the covid law in germany not to serve any food. And the USB charger are under the seats in the Neos. Not a good place to find 😅.

As a greek i should say Aegean..BUT..only when compared on short-haul trips..Don't forget that LH has a vast network Business and First class on some flights, HON Circle members and millions of customers who use it to fly all over the world, Aegean including thru codesharing..So it's not a fair comparison..The flights were also of different duration..One was over 2,5hrs ,the other an hour or so..So you don't really need snacks on the second leg..And if you want to talk about NON-service try SAS..They offer zilch now due to covid..Even if you fork out big cash and fly business you get nothing..Pitch-wise both airlines offer more or less the same..But you tried upfront seat..Why don't you try sitting in the back and then tell me how comfy that is :) ..Aegean just got its brand new A321Neo and flies on LHR route but from 2021 will be flying it to FRA/CDG routes also

Thanks Mario. I overall agree with your comments. I have also mentioned the duration of the flights and said that the LH one is shorter than the A3. However, bear in mind I flew another flight with A3 that morning (will be published in a few weeks) with a duration of 35 minutes and I received a snack and a drink. Also, both seats that I demonstrated in the video (the non-exit row in LH) are non-business class seats and therefore have the standard legroom, same as the ones further back. I do agree with you that LH has a world wide network with lots of customers. The specific video though refers to European routes only so that it can be a direct comparison between the two. I just like to say this, in the video was the same type planes,yes?, the same price about yes?the Athens loungh was faaar better,yes?the tablet holder and usb in the one was there in the other didnt exsisted,yes?if you look the seats lh looked aged for a 4 year old plane yes, and some more negatives ,so why to be so "undestanding" because is the name lufthansa and give them 2.5 instead of 1, they deserve only for the leg room.but this only my own opinion.
