I can't literally think of another pianist of our days as underrated as Lugansky.

In the meantime You can say that Nikolai Lugansky is one of the best ones worldwide. You must count him in one breathing with Daniil Trifonow. Have a look e.g. only on the Brahms concerto No. 1...

He's not underrated at all! He's considered one of the greatest pianists of our time, together with Danil Trifonov, Grigory Sokolov and the rising star Dmitry Shishkin.

The most underrated of Schumann's masterworks... And Lugansky is pure bliss.

He is a fantastic pianist. Hearing him play , I feel the tender breeze of hia aura, whilst in allegro parts he is full of joy and energy.

Mr Lugansky, you make this work understandable to me. What poetry of sound!

Lugansky has such sensitivity and depth and a great understanding of most of the classical works made very famous by other pianists, he underrated in popularity, however, he is a professor at Moscow Conservatory and is represented by great management across the planet so I think he is just not as famous as Daniil Trifonov or Katia Buniatishvili but he is just as underrated as Grigory Sokolov. He is also a great chamber music collaborator, he is stable and consistent too with a breadth and depth of integration of the musical architecture along with great musicianship of working with other instrumentalists with flawless timing. I am so glad to have discovered him. Thank you Enchanted Wanderer for this special channel dedicated to his artistry.

This master piece is haunting me since I was a little child. Unforgetable. Thanks, maestro Lugansky.

Schumann, or true passion. Intense without needing to scream. Constant in his song always reinvented. The ear accustomed to excesses (or simply to Liszt, whose intensity is not an excess) is at first bewildered, as deaf. Then, as the ear gets accustomed to Schumann, comes the fullest enchantment. As twinkles of light on water...As dancing stars...

Robert Schumann suffered from depression all his life. He attempted suicide twice, the second time by jumping into the Rhine. He was admitted to a mental institution and died two years later, without his wife Clara being able to see him again. This sonata is dedicated to Clara, the love of his life, who played it in public (she was a great pianist) to declare her love for him. Moreover having given us masterpieces of rare beauty, Schumann saved a good part of Franz Schubert's works from oblivion, finding the scores in a large chest, where his brothers had thrown them after his death.
