Tiant DEFINITELY deserves being inducted in the Baseball HOF. That said, you might want to check your facts, unless you're referring to Carlton Fisk's old joke on how the Red Sox "Won the Series, Three Games to Four" over the Cincinnati Reds." My Big Red Machine WON the 1975 World Series in seven games, not El Tiante's BoSox. I enjoyed the whole series on NBC-TV, too -- My 12th Birthday was on 07 October -- Just 4 days before Game 1 of this great World Series! I lived in a little town called Blanchester back then -- Just an hour from Cincinnati, where I was born! 😎

Goes to show once again, the sportswriters need to be off the HoF voting. They just have too many issues with players to justify their participation. Tiant was one of the best of his era, and that cannot be debated.
@robertperrotto87011 ай бұрын
It absolutely can be debated. When did he lead the AL in strikeouts? In ERA? In wins? How many Cy Young awards? How many postseason appearances? How many Championship rings? Was he consistent, yes, but consistency does not make a player HoF material. 19 seasons, less then 250 wins, lifetime ERA over 3, and less then 3k strikeouts. That is not an oversight, Tiant just doesn't deserve to be there.

@@phild8095 WAR is quite possibly the most useless statistic when it comes to pitching. I do not deny that Tiant was an above average pitcher, but in no way is he a HOF caliber pitcher. by that Logic Jerry Koosman and Ron Darling should be in the HoF. What did Tiant do that compares to Jim Palmer, Vida Blue, STeve Carlton, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson, Ron Guidry to name his contemporaries. He holds no records, has a losing post season record, less then 300 wins, never led the league in strikeouts , and he played on a very stacked Boston, and then Yankee team.

Let's face the facts, it's nothing short of disgraceful that Tiant was not enshrined in his lifetime. His numbers alone make the case let alone his unique pitching style which made him a fan favorite throughout the league. I rooted for the Yankees but I admit I loved watching this guy pitch. With all due respect to Mariano Rivera, how does he get elected unanimously to the Hall of Fame with 1,283 innings, how does Billy Wagner with 903 innings pitched get 73.8% of the vote while Tiant with 3,486 innings pitched get dismissed without a second thought.

@robertperrotto87011 ай бұрын
Sorry but no, Tiant did not reach 300 wins, never led the league in strikeouts, 20 win seasons, nor championships, Has a 1-2 record in the 3 postseason games he pitched. Not good numbers for the 19 seasons he played. There were a ton of pitchers better than he was during the time he played. Vida Blue, Seaver, Ryan, Carlton, Guidry, Gibson, Neikro brothers to name a few. He was, at his best, the #2 pitcher in Bostons rotation, and that was after he lost his fastball.
@Paulcitomusic10 ай бұрын
El Tiante was definitely Boston's number 1 guy. Spaceman Bill Lee was good but was never considered the ace. El Tiante was the man. The two were about the same in effectiveness in the World Series year with Lee having a better win percentage - maybe that is what you are referring to.
@robertperrotto87010 ай бұрын
@@Paulcitomusic Lee was definitely #1 in the rotation. Regardless of this disagreement, Tiant does not have the numbers to support being in the HoF, nor does he hold any significant records. Was he a good pitcher, absolutely. Is "good" enough to warrant being among the greatest Pitchers ever, absolutely not.
@Paulcitomusic10 ай бұрын
@@robertperrotto870 Lee only had 3 excellent years as a starter, and he never had 20 wins. Tiant contributed more to the Red Sox. I can see that Tiant is not close to the top 50 all time where he should have been a shoo-in, and he was rather far from the super ace Pedro Martinez or Walter Johnson level. You look at his boldface on Baseball Reference - there isn't very much. His great 1968 should be considered a boost, leading the league in low ERA. If Tiant had had 2 or 3 more big seasons and maybe 280 wins or so, his case would be much stronger. He played until he was 41, gave it all he had - a 229 win pitcher in the end, won 57% of his starts.
@robertperrotto87010 ай бұрын
@@Paulcitomusic But he didn't have those seasons, especially compared to his contemporaries. HoF is based upon those seasons, stats, records. How does he stack up to Jim Palmer, Steve Carlton, Vida Blue, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Bob Gibson? No Cy Young awards, four 20 win seasons, No Strikeout king, 1 ERA title. sub .500 postseason record, no league records. Was he valuable to Boston, yes, the same way Jerry Koosman, Ron Darling, Noah Syndegard was to the Mets. An above average #2 starter.
@Paulcitomusic10 ай бұрын
@@robertperrotto870 We actually mostly agree. He was half a notch below the guys you listed, during most of his career - looking at all of their best years. I'd give him a bit of a cut above merely "above average #2 starter" during his best years. But he was a big game pitcher. For his 3 solid years with Lee, I'd say they were both on a par with the other guy. Those two strong pitchers got them to a World Series (with the help of two hot rookies, Lynn and Rice). And I'd also agree with you that this video overrates him at least a little bit.
