Great video. I remembered him but wasn’t aware of his historic comeback. Thanks for posting!

Jose Rijo was my favorite guy on the mound when I was a kid. I loved watching that dude pitch. Thanks for sharing this with the world in 2024.

I gotta be honest, I had no idea how damn good Jose Rijo was. I could not have even told you the MVP of the 1990 World Series (I would've guessed Eric Davis). I certainly did not know that he had the lowest ERA in that stretch. People forget how needing TJ surgery used to be a big gamble. Pitchers didn't always know if they'd pitch again. Now it's routine maintenance. Thanks for the education!

I originally went into more detail about Rijo's dominance during that span, but cut it due to time. Rijo achieved a 147 ERA+ and 2.63 ERA across 1,315 innings during that seven year span. Excluding Clemens, the second most innings by a pitcher to match those numbers was ~550 by a reliever. By starting pitchers, the second most innings was ~350.

Your comment is perfectly crafted! I agreed. What a phenomenal career!!!

You had a similar situation with Dave Stieb, who had last pitched in 1993 when he was able to make a comeback in 1998.
@tommyfu92713 ай бұрын
Dave Steib was super underrated. He also somehow had back to back starts where he lost a no hitter with 2 outs in the 9th in both games. In one of them the hit was a bad hop single on a routine ground ball to second. Little know fact- he actually played as an outfielder his first year in the minors.

I remember when he came back like it was yesterday. When he came out of the pen they didn’t go to commercial so we could hear the fans reaction. He went on to pitch 3,innings of shutout ball. I remember his slider moved better than it did in his 20s for that game. Great memory

You used to occasionally see Miñoso under the stands at old comiskey park. I saw him a few times, he was always saying hello to everybody. And I went to quite a few but not a ton of games over the years, so he must have been out there a lot

WELL DONE❕👏👏 Jose Rijo & Juan Guzman are Thee Most Underrated SP’s of All Time . Rijo should have been an All Star 8x & Won A Cy Young No BS He got no pub back then Guzman was darn Good too .

Going 1 for 10 in 1976/1980 kept Minoso from having a .300 career average, but getting into the HOF definitely makes up for that.

People accused bill veeck of bringing Minnie back purely as a promotional stunt , and it was extremely ridiculous for veeck to outright deny that being the case when the man's ball club had a 49 year old DHing in shorts just a few years removed from ( or perhaps slightly before ) the absolute debacle that was Disco Demolition night , but his reasoning was actually sound in the sense that miñoso was in remarkable shape and Veeck was quoted as saying " if he doesn't get a hit , he'll get hit by a pitch " ; Minnie had a single in 9 or 10 at bats and was the all time leader in HBPs until Don Baylor surpassed him

Jim Palmer tried to come back in 91 after making the hall of fame. Unfortunately he got hurt playing the pirates in spring training. It would have been great if he had pulled it off.

@@walkoffstudios I was at the game he got hurt. I was really disappointed because I wanted to see him pitch because I was too young to see him before. I got an inning or 2. I still have the ticket. It would be a good video. He's pretty active on Twitter and may actually talk about it if asked.

This is sort of like Mike Norris, who came back in 1990 after last playing in 1983, all for Oakland, he had that 22-9 season in 1980 with 24 complete games.

The greatest comeback ever was by Jim Bouton, who came back in 1978, eight years after his previous Major League appearance.
@84sp843 ай бұрын
While the time away was greater than Rijo’s, the circumstances was much different. While Rijo’s was strictly battling back from injury, Bouton’s had far more to do with writing his book “Ball Four” and overall ineffectiveness.
@walkoffstudios3 ай бұрын
That would make an interesting video

@@walkoffstudios - If you do indeed do such a video, please remember to include the fact that, after Bouton made his first start of the season, which was in early September against the Dodgers, the Giants' players complained, alleging that the Braves had essentially given up a game by using Bouton. Then Bouton, in his next start, beat the Giants.
