Luka Doncic has been sensational in the 2022 NBA playoffs, making history that puts him up with names like Michael Jordan. The Dallas Mavericks recently defeated the Phoenix Suns in upset fashion to clinch the Western Conference Finals, and Luka has had tons of highlights in the playoffs dating back to his battles against the Kawhi Leonard/Paul George Clippers team.

That 24:04 moment when he bumps against the defensive player and then the defensive player goes with full strenght for a second bump to push him back he just rolls past him. That is genius that they dont teach in schools of basketball. That is something one comes up when he has the feel for the game. Little moments like these show on what level Luka is.

One of the biggest issues in Basketball commentary is that people take one extreme or another and then wage war with each other in mind numbing conflicts over essentially small nuances. That preamble out of the way I'm really happy for Doncic, he is playing really well on the big stage and it's entertaining to see the beginning of something that could be truly amazing. However, I would like to see Luka continue to evolve his game and really tighten up his offensive and defensive skill sets. Luka knows how to score and I would for him to learn how to win by steering the momentum of game and activating his teammates. I believe if he can bring his game to that level then there is no real telling how high he can rise.

Very well said! Luka has room for improvement, and the task may be too tall against the Warriors. But I was planning on making this video before Game 7 happened because there was, for a while now, this narrative that Doncic needed to prove himself in the playoffs even though he averaged over 30 points close to a triple double.
@ThePenitentSquirrel

@@tooforwon241 I honestly would love to see Doncic v. Tatum, the battle for the next generation in the NBA championships. I think GSW can run hot or cold depending on the game along with some pretty suspect defensive switching and if the rest of Mav's team plays like it's their time I think it's probable closer then most people think. Besides, I don't know very many people (outside of fans) thought the Mavericks would win the Suns series let alone put an exclamation point in the history books. To borrow a term from Chess, Luka might of had his Immortal Game (which is an a achievement in unparalleled skill).

@@ThePenitentSquirrel For a guy talking about people going to extremes, you're reading quite a lot into Dallas' defeat of the worst regular season champion in history. Phoenix is not a very strong team. Period. They skated to the finals last year due to Denver and GSW's injuries and the Lakers/Clippers rapid onset aging. The league is currently experiencing its least team-centric quality of play in at least 45 years. Luka still has to overcome a giant like GSW to warrant the levels of acclaim he is getting. Perhaps if he gets himself together quickly they can be for him what the Pistons were for Michael. That said, unlike most NBA fans, I've actually been watching Luka since he was 12. He has always been a bit on the lazy side and over reliant on his skills and intelligence. Unlike Jokic, who plays more of a legitimate playmaking role, Luka is actually not a great team player. He's far more James Harden at this point in his career than Larry Bird (an idiotic comparison if we account only for playing style). I have little doubt that he'll be the unanimous best player on earth with multiple MVPs within 5 years...if he gets his body up to speed with his brains and his balling.
@aquarpioleonine3995
@aquarpioleonine3995 2 жыл бұрын
I think Luka already DOES make his teammates better but he's not God so his team needs more talent as far as match-ups. GSW have how many HOF'ers at the moment? Maybe a handful, tbh. Current Mav's have 1 all-star so... do the math. The Mav's BLEW OUT Phoenix with 1 HOF. This nobody expected. Steven A Smith APOLOGIZED to the entire Mav's staff over it. GSW, when healthy, are GOAT TEAM so Luka losing to them... listen... this is the last flash of the GSW at the top. They had their time and SHOULD win this 2022 Title! BUT TILT!

I've been a huge Luka fan since his first year in the NBA...when he came into the league I had no idea who he was but even from early on I knew he was going to be special the way he can score the ball in so many different ways and how successful and dominant he has been at a young age....I mean the kid is 23 all he is going to do is get better and better. Glad people are giving him his due I always knew he was going to be a great player....if he can stay in shape and stay healthy and get a few more pieces around him I can see the Mavs becoming a dynasty with Luka at the helm...he needs a true #2 that can take some pressure off of him and I don't think the Mavs have that at this point but they are 1 solid free agent move away from being really special and dominating the league for years to come. ---from a lifelong Laker fan

I'm glad to see more people respecting Luka too! I think as far as him needing a true #2 option, it would definitely help. But I remember being told that we needed another star to play with Kawhi back when my Raptors were competing in the ECF. The Mavs could win it all right now with this current roster and people will look back fondly as the '22 Mavs like we do the '19 Raptors.

I love this analysis, you're spot on about Luka. But what I love about Luka having been a huge fan of Kobe back in the day is Luka's CONSISTENCY. Kobe had this stubborn tendency to hog the ball and keep shooting, which worked some times but just as often tanked the Laker's chances because it would sap the life out of his team. Luka on the other hand, consistently makes great decisions and seems to be completely unflappable mentally. Yes, he can get injured. Yes, you can tire him out. But you can't get inside his head and you can't get him to abandon his game. It's crazy how dangerous Luka is just because Luka seems to assume he's going to dominate every night.

Yea, Luka is going for that GOAT status. He is just that good and he has the game and the killer mentality to back it up. He was the MVP of the second toughest league in the world before ever setting foot on the NBA hardwood. And he is still young, he has plenty of space still left to grow and it will be very interesting to see where this journey takes him and entire sport! Yes, he is that kind of a player who will take the sport forward into the future. Much like the past great players have done. Though he is not of the Jordan breed, aka just physically on another level than his competition. I think the analysts have just hung their hat on "he's not a top tier player" are just hanging onto their guns. Because if you know anything about Basketball, you know this shit is special and a Legend is being witnessed.

Luka is good. But he needs to become better 3p shooter to be great in his position (or lets say more consistent - taking hard shots is not an excuse). At 23 and a few playoff games is no time to be in same picture as MJ. What I’m saying goes along with “be confident, don’t become complacent” - I simply hope he will come close to Mamba mentality that’s all and then we will talk about greatness. Trust me is all love for Luka. Can’t hate on a homeboy. Cheers from Slovenia.

Luka is the best player the NBA has ever seen. He will never get credit for it. He doesn't need to be as explosive as Jordan or Lebron nor as flashy as some others. HE HAS BRAINS and can do absolutely everything. He is technically the best player the NBA has ever had. A true genius! A true master! Lebron was my favorite player until Luka came along. There is no comparison. He can shoot, drible, pass, fake, hit 3s from anywhere, drive, defend, FT, ... and he is thinking the game too. So maybe Lebron because of what he done against the 73-9 Warriors in that final, but other than LBJ I think Luka is absolutely in a class of his own. LEBRON LUKA PIPPEN and KAWHI JOKIC This team would never lose. Maybe to a: MJ, CURRY, KD, BARKLEY and KAREEM team , but it would be close. Or a: Dr.J, Stockton, Karl Malone, Kobe and Reggie Miller team. or even a: Drexler, Wilt, IT, Billups, Antetokoumpo or Iverson, Oscar Robinson, Moses Malone, Jerry West and Hakeem Olajuwon or Magic, Duncan, Garnett, Havlicek and Bird Hard to tell. 😊

I love it when people try to bash Luka on efficiency when Bird had several series where his offensive production stank, including his first title where he shot 14 ppg on bad efficiency and Maxwell got FMvP over Bird.

I don't bash Luka at all. The boy is well on his way to being the best player of his generation, but anyone comparing him to Bird clearly never saw Bird play at his peak. The NBA in the 80s was a war zone. The NBA today is a series of scrimmages where they keep score. Luka has a long way to go before being comparable to Bird, but he's definitely in Nowitzki territory already, which is not bad at all.
@page8301
@page8301 2 жыл бұрын
@@respectedlocalgentleman7108 The 80s was an era with high pace and mediocre defense. Fouls is not a good measure of good defense. It also does not change that Bird had multiple series where his offensive production was bad to terrible. It is fine to puta great player on a pedastal. What is not fine is putting on the rose tinted glasses and pretend that the guy had no flaws and never played badly.

Hardens career is not comparable to Lukas in my opinion. When James was getting 6th man's, Luka was already getting built around as "the guy". Harden hit his stride in what will be remembered as a bad era of basketball in my opinion, mainly because of the rampant foul baiting from even unskilled players.

The reason Luka is gonna keep hitting the wall against Kawhi led team or Warriors is his conditioning and consistency in the 4th qt in playoff series. Now I personally knew Luka was gonna cake walk this playoff run because there was no one to truly guard him outside of the warriors. That’s how great he is. Only two systems, maybe 3-4 players in the conference that can deter him from proceeding out of a series.

@@someshnarayan7368 that’s cool, he has time to put in the correction. It’s still something he is gonna have to deal with unless he waits til the Warriors or Clippers completely die off, during the his opportunity to dominate. Anything other than that he would have to have the superior team in all of these matchups. The West is still debatably the stronger conference, but the East isn’t the same East from a decade ago. So he would still need to have good-great conditioning, since the game comes so easy to him, and consistency in the 4th when he’s facing on par/better teams.
