That OKC thunder team coddled it’s players way too much. KD, Westbrook, Harden all have had problems with their teams, teammates, fans, management, etc. OKC needs to let their players be big boys and understand not everyone will like you or your decisions.

Nah instead they stood by “players coach” Scott Brooks who basically completely pandered to Russ and KD and had their talent carry him to good regular seasons. This led to Russ and KD developing poor iso heavy habits and being resistant to actual coaching in favor of doing it “their way”

@@TheNorthie actually Billy Donovan actually did have some smart adjustments and is better at coaching then Brooks (For example the Spurs series were he adjusted by playing Kanter and Adams more minutes together which led to the Thunder dominating the boards). But when things started to get difficult Russ and KD would revert to their ISO ways

The main issue with westbrook is that he went from a very good basketball player with elite athleticism to an elite athlete that plays basketball, and yes, there is a difference. Westbrook used to be a good finisher and a very good free throw shooter (which indicates good mechanics on a jumpshot), now his finishing and free throw shooting is poor. With KD, sure he was reliant on his physical attributes, but he did make it a point to be a better basketball player (being a more team-oriented passer, moving without the ball, at least trying on defense). Now it just seems like all of his offseason work is spent on retaining his athleticism instead of honing and sharpening his skills. And as everyone knows, your athleticism is the first to go. Russ should've spent more time making his jumpshot more reliable, incorporating change of pace as a pg, doing defensive drills to at least be average (how someone with russ' physical attributes never became an all-time defender is wild to me), and learning how to move without the ball better. He never raised his basketball iq because he was never forced to, a lot of people were intoxicated by his ferocity and athleticism and never had a real conversation with him. And if they did, he was far too stubborn to actually listen to them.

Solid points made. Russ heavily relies on his athleticism, so when that starts to fade, cracks begin to show. I think you could also argue that he always had many of these flaws & that they were being overlooked because of the Thunder being a perennial playoff team. Russ' stubbornness at this point really will be his downfall if he chooses to not change

Start Simmonds by a mile. The Defence and the playmaking alone makes him a starter. You can find another scorer a lot easier than someone as good at facilitating and defending as him. Scorers a dime a dozen relatively. Simmonds you can put in heaps of spots too flexibly with your team other than SG. Simmonds also you can grow as a key element. He is also effectively the only one that could be an All Star in a coming season.. So like whatever beef with him being annoying, he gets you somewhere. The only only way you might put Simmonds on the bench is if you are in the playoffs. But to be real even then, and also key note is if you are on a bottom half team and want to make the playoffs, Simmonds is your man. He will get you there, just won't win it for you. WB obviously is the one you dump but it is more for the cap space given he is in decline, otherwise I would have him the bench option.
