Kids regularly ask me in lectures if I plan all my shots in advance. Of course not, on the contrary! A lot of material is more or less created by accident, like the roe deer in today's video.
So one March morning, I am sitting near a nest of black storks in the middle of a beech forest. The third day of filming, about twenty hours in the hide behind me, the stork has just flown away. I lean back in my chair and exhale after a long concentration at the camera viewfinder. However, I was soon snapped out of my rest by a light rustling somewhere outside the tent. I cautiously peeked out of the window and was amazed - about fifteen meters away from me, a roebuck and his girlfriend were happily resting in the leaves, soaking up the warm spring sun and cleaning their fur. Where did they come from? Apparently, I was so engrossed in filming that I didn't notice their arrival at all. That's the magic of the moment when one blends in perfectly with the surrounding nature.
I pointed my lens in their direction and started filming. After a while, the buck got up to feed. Sometimes he came even closer than I would have liked, and he didn't even fit all the way into the frame. The whole time my mind was running, "Well, yeah, but should I be focusing on the deer now that I'm primarily here for the storks that could fly back at any moment? Repositioning the lens might betray them..."
But fortunately, everything worked out exactly according to the non-existent schedule. After a few minutes of shooting, the walls of my shelter wavered slightly under the breeze that suddenly came from somewhere over the horizon. The roe deer immediately became alert, took the wind in their nostrils... and you can see the result in the video.
I thought I'd get a moment's respite after they left, but it didn't work out again. Something big and dark flickered through the trees, and a black stork landed on the nest in front of me with building materials in its beak. What can I say, it's hard work in the woods!
