This is Emily’s worst moment. The manipulation, the gaslighting, the lack of taking basic responsibility for absolutely breaking her daughter’s hearts. Yes Luke was pushed by Emily’s talk, but Lorelai’s point is that that doesn’t change the fact that Emily broke them in the first place. So she didn’t fix it, she didn’t even apologise.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Emily shouldn't get brownie points for "fixing" something that she broke in the first place. Also, as you pointed it out, she never actually apologized or admitted she did anything wrong. Let's face it, she didn't give a fuck if they got back together, she just wanted them back together so that Lorelai would speak to her again, so it was not a selfless move. Was it the right thing for Emily to do, talking to Luke? Sure. Should her daughter just suddenly act like everything is fine again? Not really.

Just because Luke and I found a way to repair the damage doesn't erase the fact that it happened!" Overall, I do like Emily, but she is deeply flawed. Once she stops trying to force her will on Lorelai, she improves vastly, and I love her character development. But it's sad that it took nearly losing Lorelai completely to get her to that point.

In season one, Emily called out Richard for insulting Dean and alienating Rory. In a later season she called out Richard for suing Jason and alienating Lorelai. She showed growth and self-awareness. She didn't want to alienate the daughter she drove away or the granddaughter whose early years she missed out on. Yet the writers decided to throw that all away and have her break Luke and Lorelai up? That's a crime. A total injustice to her character.

She didn't like Dean much, but he was just Rory's first boyfriend, it wasn't that big deal for Emily because she never though it would last. She also didn't like Jason, but Jason was rich and "had a good education". Lorelai had great chances of marrying Luke, she even said that to Emily before Emily's "weeding". I think him no longer with Sherry brought her back to feeling like Lorelei missed an opportunity as well as Lorelei and Christopher being together would fit into the social constructs in her society better made her act out more. Emily has often tried to manipulate things so they "look good" or so she won't be embarrassed so not as much if a stretch. A lapse in judgement for sure and one she regretted, not necessarily because she was wrong but because it caused arguably a bigger rift than before with Lorelei.

Absolutely. I always appreciated Emily as a character and I have no clue why they decided to do her so dirty, I get that it's a show and drama is the bread and butter, but surely there could've been a better way to do that? It's even worse considering earlier in the show, Emily was all for Luke and Lorelai getting together. She could literally sense it. "You're both idiots", and even the time at some party(?) where she asks Lorelai want she thinks of Luke? Idk it felt so weird that she suddenly wasn't okay with him when just a couple of seasons ago it was the complete opposite.

This was great, Lorelai standing up to Emily. I don't agree with what Emily did, though, I believe she did believe she was helping. She eventually accepts Luke and is kind, the whole thing with that beautiful house they were going to buy. She did love Lorelai, she just didn't accept boundaries. Lorelai was independent, Emily didn't know how to be that way. She says it, she went from her parents house, to the sorority house, to being married. She never stood on her own. She did what she had seen her whole life.

@@yoyo845 Lorelai, is the same. In fact, the main reason she runs away is that she doesn't want to live in a society that would judge her all the time. If she didn't get pregnant, she would've studied something that would allow her to travel the world to avoid her parent's environment. But because she was pregnant, her plans drastically changed. Her parents would've gained more power over her in that scenario. The thing is, Richard and Emily were parents from a completely different era. So they did what they knew was best for her. They never meant any harm. On the other hand, because Lorelai LOVES to do everything her own way and micromanages everything that happens at the inn, I can tell she's just like her mother. I think the problem was that Lorelai NEVER tried to understand her parents. She just judged them. But I guess they did the same to her... again, different times, different parenting ways.

*this video* is actually making me mad. Just because she went talking to Luke does not mean she fixed their relationship. She didn't give a crap about Lorelai's feelings. She didn't try to understand why Luke's the one that's going to make Lorelai happy. She just wanted to have Lorelai's baby daddy to become her partner so he and Lorelai and Rory will be a "normal" family, not because Christopher is the one. Luke wanted to be with Lorelai but didn't want her to be distanced from her parents because of their relationship, that's why he was reluctant to reconcile. Only after Emily's talk he thought Lorelai's parents are now accepting him and that's why he got back together with her. But again, Emily's disapproval of the relationship was the reason why they broke up in the first place. Emily shouldn't get (all) the credit for "fixing" them.

This is one of Emily's awful character traits. I give her points that she has had moments where she was willing to admit she was wrong or try to make a genuine connection to fix things but then she'll end up either ignoring the moment or twisting it to make it seem like she was the one who did everything. Lorelai's final speech is right where it was Emily that caused the problem to begin with by inviting Christopher to the vow renewal and egging him on to break-up Luke and Lorelai. The only reason she even came to Luke was she realized how horrible the decision was and thought fixing this one thing was going to fix everything. She still doesn't acknowledge that her meddling is what caused everything and the collateral damage is still there. All she really did was tell Luke she'd stop butting in which was his main hang-up about how enmeshed Emily was in Lorelai's life.

@@lauriecarson6483 I think it was more that hearing about her shutting Emily out showed him that they were still a unit, A united front. But also Luke felt guilt and was struggling with having broken her heart, hence the mood swings and the bad attitude at work. These feelings had been culminating for some time, and when Emily said she’d stay out of it, it was just the catalyst he needed to try to make things work again with Lorelei. Lorelei did everything right. I don’t think Luke ever wanted to be without her. He just wants to feel like Christopher won’t always be in the effing way. I am SO not team Christopher. He had a few moments, but for the most part he was just a manipulative, narcissistic, spoiled baby. I wouldn’t have been bothered if they’d written in him driving off of a cliff.

This was really bad writing. The first season or so of the show was Lorelai learning that though her parents were stodgy and rigid, they were complex people who really cared about her while Emily and Richard learned that their daughter was more than the teenage girl who ran away. Then the writers decided that they needed more conflict and decided to make the parents into exactly what teenaged Lorelai thought they were when she ran off. When that got old, they turn Luke into an ass for awhile. Ugh.

I see many whinnies who drank the "eat the rich" Kool-Aid here. Emily was wrong in her ways, but she did love Lorelai. Because she found love in what she thought was the traditional way, she wanted that for her daughter. She never meant to hurt her. Of course, she didn't have a life of her own because everything was handed to her. She didn't have to get a loan to study or try to get accepted. Met a man she liked and got married to him right away. Consequently, she got a big house, and that was it. Her whole life was about fulfilling her husband's needs and building her daughter's life. It isn't true she didn't care about Lorelai's feelings. The problem was that she always abided by her husband's wishes. In their times, kids did what their parents wanted for them. And that was the only way to achieve success because grown-ups knew better. She started to change when Lorelai was back in their lives. Because she wanted her closer. She even splits with Richard because he is insensitive towards Lorelai's feelings. Yes, she did something wrong, but it was out of love for his daughter again. Nothing else. Lorelai was a good mom, but the fact that she pushed Christopher away made Rory extremely insecure with men. Therefore, she's always making the wrong decision regarding this matter. So she also made mistakes. It's a shame the new seasons weren't made because they wanted to touch base on that. How Lorelai's motherhood affected Rory and how she would start confronting her about that.
