I'm 62 yrs old now, I was dating my husband when this song was released. We were two black people trying to make it in the world. We didn't come from money but we had good values within us. We used to listen to this song while riding around on Friday nights talking about our dreams. We could relate to the song about wanting to get away and just start fresh. Today we're living our dreams in our golden years. I didn't know there was a remake of it until looking at my phone and I listen to the country version by Luke Combs . I can still see why it's on Billboards and he did a good job. I teared up justing listening to it thinking about our struggles when we were young with only a high school education facing the world. We're first time grandparents and our kids are doing great.

This was my sons (now 26 yrs old) favorite song (the original) when he was only 3 yrs old. I had to play it all the time. He still loves it. He recently made a playlist for our road trip, and of course it was on there. The song will always have a special place in my heart for more reasons than one. It's simply amazing. I love Luke's version as well! He did a great job covering it and I'm so glad he didn't change the lyrics. The greatest thing Luke did was introduce this song to a new generation. You know they're all going back and listening to the original version, and I'm glad for that. It's a great song that really brings on all the feelings.

The song peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1988 & again hit the charts in 2023 when country singer Luke Combs released it, hitting #2 on Billboard Hot 100 & #1 on Country Airplay chart. When it hit #1 on the country chart in 2023, it became the 1st time a Black woman hit #1 with a solo composition.

I was diagnosed with cancer for the first time at age 13. Me and my girlfriend at the time used to climb on the roof at night, lay next to each other, watch the stars and listen to this song on repeat (not this version obviously). I look back now and realize how blessed I am to still be here and while me and her aren’t together today, she played a big part in me overcoming that battle. Fast forward to 3 years ago (age 34), was diagnosed again. This time I had my current girlfriend of 12 years by my side. Once again in remission. Hey there! You can do it! It's not easy- I won't lie- but it's so worth it. The world looks so much brighter when you're sober and you REALLY FEEL JOY. I am almost five years clean of opiates. I know that it's different, but the reason most of us abuse drugs/alcohol is to escape, numb, and try to forget the pain. But here is the deal- the pain doesn't just go away until we face it. The only way to really do that- and be able to handle the feelings- is sober. Another reason ppl abuse drugs/alcohol is to self medicate some mental illness. I recommend a dual diagnosis treatment center because they will help you see if you are experiencing any mental illness. It flies under the radar a lot, so going to one is important and helps the process. Either will help keep you as comfortable as possible during acute withdrawal. Wishing you the best of luck. A friend sent me a quote during my detox and I still have it on my refrigerator. "It's amazing on the other side of hard" that is so true. You can do this! Wishing you the best of luck.

I hope you find peace w your mom. My parents divorced due to my dad's drinking. I was only 7. My brothers- who were my nest friends- wanted to stay w my daddy (codependency, but mom didn't know about that back then). So mom left w my baby sister & I and moved 2 states away. I was crushed but we never talked about it. Ever..She was 32 w 4 kids.. through therapy I've been able to make peace (almost) w my moms decision. I divorced around the same age and can understand why she did things the way she did.. life, especially w children can be very hard for a single mom. I adored my mom but still had some anger inside that never healed. She died 10 years ago. I wish I'd had that talk w her while she was still alive but she knew what separating us kids did, and she carried that guilt for the rest of her life. I also had anger towards my daddy, but we never spoke of it. I could see the sadness in their eyes when i asked questions when I was a child. I didn't want to make them sad, and stayed mute on the subject for the rest of their lives. So instead of talking to them and perhaps getting answers and maybe finding peace, I talked to empty chairs in therapy. I could say whatever I wanted, but it's not the same as a 2 person conversation. Sorry for the novella. I just wanted you to know how important it is to talk them while they are still here. Even if it only eases the pain a bit- that's better than nothing. Hoping you find the peace you deserve. ❤

Fast Car by Tracy Chapman is one of my favorite songs in existence, I thought any cover would do her song a disservice, but I actually love it and I don't even like country music. 😅

As a long time country music fan with an eclectic taste in music, I haven’t heard this song since I was a child. My country music loving parents LOVED Chapman. I’m man enough to admit upon first hearing this version, I wept like a baby
