The biggest difference is that Luke would never have tried to kill his nephew unless he had no other choice. Remember, this is the man who was the only one who saw any good in his father and was the only one who believed that he could redeemed.

I like to call EU Luke - The Great Redeemer. Most memorable is a moment when he's fighting a dark Kam Solusar and turns him back to the light. AS he establishes himself, EU Master Luke in effect undoes what Yoda and the Old Republic Order preached for years "Once you start down the dark path...", and offered a new way, a way of redemption, starting with Luke's father.

I wonder that if George got to make his sequel trilogy what would Leia's powers extend to if she had the force, and if she would have succeeded in making a New Republic after defeating Maul, Talon and their crime syndicates with the help of Luke, of course, Leia could've earned the title of The Uniter, uniting the galaxy once and for all, or well, until the Uzang Vong would come.

For me Legends Luke is the real Luke. I mean yes, even in the old canon he was insanely powerful, as George himself said, he had a similar potential as his father, fulfilled it and went on to become the most powerful Jedi of all time but not even that does him justice. Grandmaster Luke nearly was what Anakin could have become. We never got to see full potential Anakin but Luke gave us a glimpse on how powerful he could have become. We all deserved to see Luke in live action on the peak of his powers, he was the hero we and the galaxy far far away needed but Disney had other plans...

Well he didnt have similar potential.He had the ''same'' potential.Also you should really stop associating Luke's story to Anakin.Luke's EU stories mostly happened before the prequels and the creation of the chosen one prophecy.Also its the opposite,its ''Eu Luke was what Anakin could have become and not the reverse.Remember Luke's force powers were all made before prequel Anakin

After finally reading the Heir to the Empire trilogy… I’m SHOCKED that when Disney took over Lucasfilm in 2012 why they didn’t just agree to do movies on the Heir to the Empire trilogy. They didn’t even have to call it Episode 7,8, and 9 they could’ve just made it it’s own thing and then base a whole new trilogy on that
@gregorydotson6776
@gregorydotson6776 Жыл бұрын
The reason is Mythic Jedi. It sounded too much like right. Disney had become Woke. So of course they want to demolish a Character like Luke Skywalker who is a Hero and he's also is a Alpha Male type and they don't want any Alpha Male types they want men in a dress. And Luke is also White or you can say a Caucasian and the Hero. And you see that shouldn't matter what race that you are. But when you are dealing with a Woke Culture who wants to take down and don't want to have to deal with a Male Hero and plus he is also an Alpha Male type. And that is why they are always trying destroy Characters like Luke Skywalker. You see it all the times in movie Films today. And it doesn't matter rather if you are white ? If you are one of those Alpha Male types and the Hero , they don't want to promote those types like they used to do in films. The Industry is loosing out because they have become to Woke. But like they say when you become Woke you become broke , then you lose.

One of my favorite things about EU Luke is how he and Mara ultimately balanced each other out. In a way they needed each other - Mara needed him so someone could help her deprogram what was essentially the equivalent of Palps' cult indoctrination/psych manipulation and then to help her actually adjust to being a normal(ish) person, Luke needed her to keep him in check whenever he overstepped his "hero" boundaries out of a fear of failing everyone around him and trying to do too much to help. I genuinely think a canon Luke with a decently-executed canon Mara, dead or not, would never have ended up in a series of circumstances that ended with him becoming a cynical hermit. She simply wouldn't have let it get that far. She was the type of person to knock him back to his senses when he was overtaxing himself trying to solve everybody's problems out of a sense of guilt or obligation. Say maybe Ben _was_ too far gone - Luke would have beaten himself up trying to figure out how to "fix" it, felt guilty for thinking maybe there was no way out, and she would've been the one to remind him that as admirable as that sentiment can be, maybe he couldn't save everybody or fix everything and that was okay, they could only do the best they could moving forward. If everything went to shit regardless, she'd have come back as a Force ghost and annoyed the hell out of him for blaming himself and he wouldn't have lasted on that island for longer than a day. Idc what anyone says, EU Luke clearly valued the fact that she was there to be an anchor when even his biggest strength (his willingness to help/make things better) got the better of him. EU Luke had weaknesses, but there were times when he let people like her help him get past them. What makes a character heroic isn't just what they can do on their own, it's also how they relate to the people around them and have the humility to allow those people to help them grow when such help is needed. Unlike what I think some people at LF might believe, og Luke wasn't a perfect messiah who needed to be desconstructed to be relatable. He already was imperfect, but in a way that could reasonably coexist with the things that made him so powerful. It's overly simplistic on the part of any writer to assume that an interesting character cannot be both.

Imo I prefer Legends Luke cause it really kept true to the original trilogy and had him grow beyond it. The Dark Empire was one of his darkest times but with the help of his friends he overcame it and grew stronger because of it. He also grew more powerful over the years and to me it makes sense why he became as powerful as he did. Despite having the power he still fails a lot and loses a lot of people. For example Mara Jade, Jacen Solo, Chewbacca and many others. Also he still stuck with his beliefs of redemption throughout the entire process. He chose not to fight Jacen cause he was afraid he would end up killing him.
@Vskage65

Well thats not true tho.Luke didnt want to fight Jacen because he believed that if he killed him ,he would fall to the dark side.Luke was perfecly willing yo kill Jacen,the problem was that if someone with his power falls to the dark side ,its game over the Galaxy as at that point.He was the most powerful mortal force user that has ever lived

I prefer Legends Luke, for pretty much everything you mentioned. If Episode VIII wanted to do the disillusionment thing, I think a more nuanced way would be this: Instead of Luke trying to kill Kylo Ren, he tries to counsel him after he had experienced the death of a fellow student, unable to cope and turning to the dark side. Instead of being grouchy and edgy, he’s merely heartbroken at his inability to save his nephew. He wouldn’t throw his lightsaber away; he’d gently hand it back to Rey, tearfully saying, “I’m sorry… but I lost the right to this.”

Expanded Universe Luke Skywalker achieved many notable feats throughout various novels, comics, and other media. Here are some of his most significant accomplishments: 1. Became one of the greatest Jedi Masters: After receiving extensive training from Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and other Jedi Masters, Luke became one of the most powerful and skilled Jedi in the galaxy. 2. Founded a new Jedi Order: After the fall of the Empire, Luke began training a new generation of Jedi to help maintain peace and justice throughout the galaxy. 3. Defeated the reborn Emperor Palpatine: In the Dark Empire comic series, Luke faced off against a resurrected Palpatine and managed to defeat him with the help of his sister Leia and other allies. 4. Survived numerous battles and duels: Throughout his adventures, Luke faced many enemies and survived intense battles and lightsaber duels, including against Darth Vader, the Emperor's Hand, and several powerful Sith Lords. 5. Discovered and trained Mara Jade: Luke encountered Mara Jade, a former Imperial assassin, and helped her overcome her dark past and become a powerful Jedi Knight and his eventual wife. 6. Fought against the Yuuzhan Vong: In the New Jedi Order series, Luke played a key role in the galaxy's war against the invading Yuuzhan Vong, a powerful and ruthless alien race. 7. Became one with the Force: In James Luceno's The Unifying Force, Luke Skywalker temporarily achieves the state of Oneness, defeating countless Yuuzhan Vong warriors as he confronts their leader Shimrra Jamaane. The real Luke Skywalker belongs to the Expanded Universe!

Legends/EU Luke will always be the best. But I know Disney will never disregard their own movies, so I try to think of ways that they could fill in the gaps and fix them (I know, it would be difficult). But what if: *Mara Jade is brought back into canon, and Luke has a vision of Ben Solo killing her. Perhaps that could prompt Luke to feel defensive enough to strike his nephew. Because I just can’t believe that Luke would strike down his nephew for choosing the Dark after knowing that he could return Darth Vader to the Light. But perhaps that moment of confusion was to protect Mara Jade? *And maybe Luke didn’t actually give up on being a Jedi? What if that was a lie he told Rey because he knew she was a Palpatine (which he admitted) and he didn’t initially trust her. What if Luke sensed the coming darkness, and sent many of his students into hiding? Perhaps they could still be training under another Jedi, like a canon version of Kyle Katarn. Possibly Cal Kestis?

Luke from Legend wasn't unstoppable. But it is Luke who remains true to his character from his youth when he was a farmer boy and the boy who rode the speedy bike to catch animals for sale. He faced hardship and stumble but he wasn't alone. He has Leia and Han by his side and Luke forges a bond with other people and trusts in them. Most important is Luke's student VS Exar Kun case with completely diverse from Disney canon. Many new-gen Star Wars fans who are happy about how "realistic" Luke was in The Last Jedi, watch Jedi's students VS Exar Kun. They will scream in terror at how Disney messes up hard in Luke Character.

They could reboot this whole franchise. Just show clips of the last trilogy, then cut to Luke waking up saying " huh that was weird" Then pick up from there.. and start over. It can be a vision of a possible future he needs to prevent or just a dream, solely used as a plot device to erase the last movies. Doesnt matter, the fans will accept it. All we want is a proper sequel. Hell it could even be an almost 4th wall breaking joke and we would take it. Doesnt matter how we get there, just get there

Excellent video! 100% correct. Disney's attempt at an abrupt transfer of power from Luke to a new generation, was the worst decision I've ever seen a studio make. A much longer transition period, regardless of how affluent Rey was in the Force, would've allowed for years and years of more Luke Skywalker potentially giving us his Legends badassery. Rey could've impressed him but still needed him for control and honing. I just hope the Star Wars universe can recover from this.

I have to give it to Legends Luke because he developed instead of underdeveloped and felt like the character we saw him become at the end of the originals: A new Jedi Knight on his way to becoming a grandmaster, rebuilding the Jedi Order better than the corrupt and flawed one of the prequels, and also becoming the person that Anakin only dreamed of becoming. He made choices that he’d actually make and his life was a lot happier. Luke in Legends is the way it should have been and infinitely more interesting
@FifthConcerto

I recently read the Thrawn trilogy (the original one), and the portrayal of Luke in that was far superior, in my opinion, to that of Disney's Luke. I appreciated that Luke actually dwells on the fact that he used the Dark Side when mind controlling guards to get into Jabba's palace, and decides to pointedly resist that kind of easy solution to problems as the Thrawn series progresses. He has the power and ability to do many things that would get him out of tough situations with little effort, but those solutions would betray his principles, so he rejects them. Luke still struggles and goes through conflict, and rehashes lessons from his past, but every time, he chooses not to go down the Dark Path. I would have liked to see that treatment in the most recent trilogy movies.

I like some of the powers Luke has in Legends, but some of them have that “get out of jail for free” card which is typical of comics. Powers are cool, but I’m much more interested in a character’s story and how they evolve, especially in Star Wars. I don’t like the version of Luke in the Sequels, but I think the version we see in Mando and when he’s training Grogu is very spot on for what I imagined him as. Funnily enough, I think the version of Luke in Battlefront 2’s story is the best. One that’s separated himself from both the new republic and empire. Someone who gives the imperials he’s fought for so long a choice. Not to join the rebellion, but “a choice to be better” as he says to Del. Luke is supposed to be Anakin’s potential realized, but not just in power; in character as well. Qui-Gon’s character was inspired by Luke in ROTJ, so I’ve always viewed Luke as Qui-Gon’s legacy.

Well said! I agree! Luke should have been the completion of Anakin’s character arc. I’ve always felt that the prophecy was not fulfilled by Anakin alone, but through his children as well (and they’re technically born of the Force, as he was). Luke should be able to rectify the previous mistakes of his father and the Jedi Order, while building a new Order that focuses more on a connection with the living Force instead of rules and dogma. I also see Luke as Qui-Gon’s legacy, as he helps fulfill the prophecy that Qui-Gon was so concerned with. It wasn’t just about defeating the Emperor, it was about rebuilding the Jedi Order so that they were no longer corrupted by politics and ideals.

I still, to this day, have not been able to come to terms with Disney's version of Luke, but there is a silver lining... The expanded universe, everything I love about it; Luke's continued story, the Thrawn trilogy, the stories even further in the future told in media like the legacy comics, the distant past told in the Old Republic games and stories. All this, our Star Wars, it's "locked in". Nothing can take it away from us, not even disney's terrible treatment of Luke. It may be sad that it was tossed aside and won't be continued any longer but it's been immortalised for us all to continually enjoy.

I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of Outcast Luke from the sequel trilogy. Execution needs work, though. I honestly feel like they took what they were TRYING to do with Luke here, (and a bit of Thor from Avengers Endgame), and did it better with Obi-Wan in the Kenobi show. The shoe had a ton of problems, but that setup for where Ben's mental state was at the time was at least believeable. I need to experience the Legends version of Luke. I read a few of the Young Jedi Knights books when I was a kid, and I'd love to revisit them.

He's altogether well rounded and though he had been written by many authors, they all did their best to honor George Lucas' vision of Luke.

Read Tales of the Jedi Redemption. It’s the same story as Luke from TLJ but instead of Rey and Luke it’s about Ulic Qel-Droma and Vima Sunrider. It’s a far more compelling story and doesn’t assassinate anyone’s character. It’s also set during the Old Republic era.

Even Luke almost immediately as he becomes a Jedi briefly turns to the darkside in his climactic duel against Vader pulls himself back to the light; fearing what Vader and Palpatine would have done to Leia he gives into his fear and then his anger. That a Grandmaster Luke slipped with a sleeping Ben Solo to the point of igniting his lightsaber is ridiculous. The very same Luke that threw his lightsaber aside when confronting evil's pure form in Sidious. It honestly boggles the mind how Disney could get the character so very wrong.

There are tons and tons of lore about Luke in legends but I highly recommend Disney SW fans to read Heir to the Empire, and see the how his character arc was beautifully portraited. If you're looking for the human side of him it's all there. I remember there's a part where he's totally depressed and hesitant about continuing to be a jedi, but he never cuts himself from the force or never shows any hesitation to protect those who loves. I think the character development in the Legends are waaaay more relatable and well established.

I don't recall which "legends" novel it was, possibly Courtship of Princess Leia, but Luke was questioning his use of the force. Worried that his use of power in one part of the galaxy caused something negative to happen elsewhere, as a sort of cosmic balance. There are many examples in the old novels of Luke having self doubt, he just always found some inspiration. I know there are far more "legends" novels than there are canon, but I feel he was a much more rounded character, even if he was a little OP at times.

Legends Luke over Canon Luke is my choice. For Canon, I hoped that Luke would continue to train Rey and new students, like Finn, as a Force Ghost. However, since Mark Hamill resigned from playing Luke, I doubt that would ever happen unless Hamill will only voice Luke (Qui-Gon speaking to Yoda as a voice in Clone Wars).

Luke in Legends/Lucas Canon = the ultimate hero who defeated the Empire and restored the Jedi Order. Luke in the Disney Canon = an old recluse who turned on the Jedi tradition despite having absolutely no reason to do so and became a prop to facilitate the Rey story.

The main line of hope we have for Luke's character in the Disney canon is to FILL the time period between Mandalorian and Ben Solo going dark with shows, movies, etc of Luke being the Legends hero, within the canonical context. It CAN be done, easily, culminating in a Clone Wars type show that leads into Ben's downfall and Luke's reaction, giving a proper context as Clone Wars did. But in order for that to be done...KK _MUST_ give Filoni and friends complete control without interference, where she just green lights the stuff and writes the checks.

What a great description of the two characters. I can't help but think that the optimum would have been somewhere in between: legends succumbs to our desire to pad the stats of our favourite heroes, and "cannon" disregards the grit that good heart that made Luke Luke. But I'm pretty novice on the topic. Great video though. Generous and thoughtful.

I hesitated to even watch this video because I thought it would just be him taking cheap shots at canon Luke/ignoring the flaws in EU luke. I think he did a decent job of representing canon Luke fairly though and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm a little disappointed he didn't really dive into any of the flaws with EU luke though, particularly with how stupidly powerful he becomes. With so many different writers over the years, by the latter half of the EU I really felt like Luke was almost a cop-out for an author, because they could just make him powerful enough to defeat any enemy they needed.

I wish there was a way to combine both good aspects of each universe. I like EU a lot more but like with everything else, it wasn't perfect and it did have a few problems here and there, but many stories were solid. Canon Star Wars, while having quite a few problems, particularly the sequel trilogy, because that had no direction, and even the people who worked on it admitted that, still has some good stories in video games, comics ect.

I think Theory is very right in saying it all depends on how much into the lore one gets. When I first watched the last Jedi I was just a causal viewer, so I didn't think Luke's turn was anything weird and thought star wars fans who were making a ruckus of it were just being purist. Ever since I discovered this channel and learnt so much more about the characters and the lore and what could've been (aka legends), I found out why Luke's change was so violently opposed by true fans - because the Luke from OT would've never even thought of killing Ben. He didn't kill his father, the man who committed great atrocities, choosing instead to turn him back to the light side. Jedi Master Luke would've been even wiser than ep 6 Luke, so why would he change strategies and chose to immediately turn on kill mode instead right?!
