We care more about the card than the atmosphere. You need to focus on the meat and potatoes before adding bows and whistles. Regardless of what the media tries to tell the audience, most people bought 299 because the card was stacked to the brim and not because of O’Malley. O’Malley does not carry cards like Conor did or even Alex. UFC would have done a lot better if they had put Max and Ilia as the main event as the rumours had it and have O’Malley and Merab as a co-main. The reality is that currently we don’t have highly ranked Mexican fighters in the UFC. There was no point trying stack this card with mexican fighters when there was no going to be any substance to it. Most mexican fans would have been happier with bigger names anyway.

I think the main issue is that the UFC, in general, is too expensive for most fans. The PPVs are expensive, and this Sphere event is just plain outrageous. People seem to be having fun poking at the UFC, likely out of genuine frustration with the product being overpriced for the general fan.

Berlanga (canelos opponent) is promoting his fight better than any of the ufc fighters are promoting theirs. Ufc messed up making the main event a non mexican main event but it's understandable because none of the mexican fighters separated themselves from the pack in time.

I'm curious what the results will be on a production side, but I'm skeptical it'll even be half as fun to watch as an old Pride event. On top of that, the tickets are comically outside the budget of the average fan. Most importantly, the card for the "greatest sporting event of all time" is below average for a PPV. So, I would say the lion's share of criticism I've seen has been entirely warranted.

The UFC needs more personality and I think they've caught on by now. For instance such a simple thing as custom shorts for the fighters seems to be making it's way back. I really don't understand why they stopped with them (standard shorts sure but no custom patterns?) because there's where some of the best merch possibilities come from. Imagine selling soccer tees and not having any names or recognizable numbers on them.

The UFC basically just rang up every mexican under contract and put them on the card. If you don't see the qualitative drop off in the recent 1-2 years for virtually no return for the customer then I don't know what to tell you.. and not only "no return" but quite literally making it worse for the customer! I've gone from watching and loving every fight night and numbered card to having to squint and debate on whether watching the UFC is even worth it still because most main cards start at 4am for me and I just can't justify it anymore with how terrible even most numbered cards are these days.

My only point is that the card is underwhelming compared to other cards we’ve had and will have this year. Look at the co-main and feature fight on the Max vs Illia card, that card is great. (I forget which card it was) but one of the cards this year had Figgy vs Garbrant as a prelim fight… the card is underwhelming and I think they have too much faith in OMally to be able to sell. Canelo waited for Masvidal vs Nate, which at the time, was the biggest selling fight for them, Canelo doesn’t have to wait this time 😂

I agree that pageantry is great for MMA, especially as someone who was obsessed with PRIDE fighting. But the pageantry was always secondary to the epic fights aka tournaments like the Grand Prix which guaranteed exciting match-ups and moments. This card doesn't have that element, in fact, it's got a decent shot to be a dud. Merab and Sean could be mired against the cage for most of 25 minutes, Valentina vs Grasso are fighting for the third time in a row, and Ortega vs Lopes could easily end too fast to carry the card. Everything else on the card is forgettable unless you're hype to shout Chiwiwi or something. But all of that is really just to say, the pageantry and presentation of the sphere is fine. But this card, like ALL fight cards, will be remembered for the quality of the fights over everything else. If not, it'll likely mean the card was a letdown.

Trying to do this amazing one time event at the Sphere and have it be a tribute to Mexico (funded by the Saudis) was too much. O'Malley vs Merab is a solid main event but neither guy is Mexican. Alexa Grasso is cool and Mexican but she's fighting Valentina for the third time in a row. Ortega vs Lopes should be cool if it happens this time. But the other two fights don't belong on the main card of a PPV. It would have been so much better to do a blockbuster card at the Sphere. And a separate Mexican card maybe in Mexico? The show inside the sphere will be a spectacle. But it doesn't have the feel of a stacked card. I certainly wouldn't pay thousands to see it live and I probably won't pay $80 to watch it at home.

I think we need to acknowledge the elephant in the room. Dana is having a battle with boxing for Mexican holiday events and thus Mexican fans. This is a play for the future. Boxing promoters sniped T-Mobile center from the ufc over a year in advance. Dana was then able to negotiate out of his contract with mgm/T-Mobile for one event. This is not only a batter between ufc and boxing but an ego battle between Dana and the big boxing promoters.

Been watching UFC forever. Back in the day they usually only had cards that were stacked and you ever excited about every fight now they try to get away with 1 good fight and rest of the card nobody gives a shit about and the ppv was only $40 . Another reason is because TUF created stars by having a reality tv show. Then TUF died when they had Nogueira vs. Team Mir as coaches which no one gave a shit about. Now you don't have as many stars on UFC cards because of this. Season 1 pretty much every fighter on there was a huge star after the show. Chris Leben, Josh Koshcheck, Mike Swick, Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian, and Stephan Bonnar. UFC is just dogshit cards now and don't get me started on them mixing women with men on UFC cards.
