Sarah you will never have baby chicks without a rooster unless you get fertilized eggs from someone with a rooster for her to set on. She is only doing what chickens do. Check out the home biogas digester....., 1ltr of weeds/food scraps a day will provide 3hrs cooking gas. Set up a solar panel and wind turbines combi system - notes a wind turbines go for a marine turbines. Vertical helix as it will capture wind from every direction. Even a small system would at least charge your electric power tools..... however get the best batteries solar batteries you can afford, cheaping out on the batteries will cost you more upgrading later.

@@lukeandsarahsoffgridlife if it helps makes your life easier then it's worth it. I have been trying to figure out how to do something similar whilst recovering from injury. There is a ceramic Indian company who have non electric fridges (just add water literally). Look into serious intensive goat grazing to clear land instead. Set up a electric fence perimeter and let the goats loose, give them an area they can clear each day/week before moving it. Instead of burning brush piles..... buy a chipper and garden shredder. This will provide mulch. 1ft of mulch will suppress weeds and also retain more moisture. More moisture means less fire risk. See zaytuna farm Australia. The mulch will eventually compost down which will feed the soil improving fertility to grow flowers and crops. Also look into grey water reuse systems... eg earthships and permaculture.... it can be done in wicking beds and DIY for reasonably cheaply.

Is that a young or old bird that has become a male? It could be some sort reproductive damage if it was definitely a female at the beginning or maybe if you don’ t have a rooster, she has decided to be the top player (physically still female but acting like a male). I am a little confused because her/his tail feathers don’t look male but if it is very young, maybe he is only now maturing?
