Greetings from U.S.A (what used to be the home of the brave and the land of the free), anyway, I'm a truck driver myself. I've seen some of your video's about trucking in the U.K, very interesting! I wanted to share with you and your audience about what it takes and costs to become a truck driver in U.S. First you must be 21 years old for insurance reasons. Next, you must go to trucking school or someone experienced can teach you to become a truck driver to pass your driving test at the local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles). But before going to the DMV you must pass you DOT (Department Of Transportation) physical exam, meaning you must go to a certified DOT doctor to make sure you are 100% healthy. Next, if you are 100% healthy then you'll get a DOT physical medical card good for up-to 2 years only. So every 2 years you must pass your DOT physical to be eligible to drive a truck. If some people are on medications they can only qualify for up-to one year of their DOT physical to drive, but if that person or persons are on insulin he/she is disqualified immediately and can no longer drive a commercial truck unless he/she gets off insulin, but he/she must renew their DOT physical every year. The DOT physical costs anywhere from $75 to up-to $120 depending where you go, the nicer the neighborhood the more expensive. Next, there are several rules to drive a commercial truck in the U.S.; # 1. 70 hours and up-to 8 days; or # 2. 60 hours and up-to 7 days with 30 minute break before your first 8 hours whether you are driving or not. In order to reset your full time hours you must have 34 hours consecutive off duty in order to rest you hours to zero. You cannot haul more than 80 thousand pounds including the truck, the driver, and the load, If your truck weighs more than 80K LB. total then that is a serious violation with heavy fines per pound. Next, it costed me $4300 to get my truck license, we call that Class A License. You can get your Class A license cheaper if you shop around. There are several licenses to get if you have to...class A, class B, class C, passenger endorsement, and motor cycle endorsement. Class C license is for regular vehicles. Anything that has air-brakes requires a Class B or a Class A license. Most of the trucks on the road are manual transmission, but within the past 5 years more and more companies are transferring to automatic transmissions for fuel economy and for less transmission repairs. Next, if you own you own truck you can make anywhere from $250K to over $500K a year gross (before taxes) depending on the contact, the distance, and what you are hauling. Oversize loads can make huge annual income like over $600K pear year or more gross. The truck driver demand in the U.S is very, very high. You can make easily $70K per year gross driving local and be home every day, but the DOT police officers are very strict on safety and making sure your truck is road worthy and safe, that is why you get a DOT inspection every now and then and if your truck fails that is a heavy fine and it will effect your driving record.

Agreed, very considerate to and conscious of other roads users as well, even idiot cyclists. I cycle but cyclists in London take the piss. I get why the deliveroo riders do it, it’s not a high paying, by the hour job- the quicker you make drops the more you can make the better the pay (plus more likely to get a tip) so to some extent I get it but equally they’re still f**king nuts!

Patience of a saint Luke! I was a bus driver, started in 1990 with the same attitude as yours to other road users. 10 years later I had to give it up as I was burnt out and suffering a kind of ptsd. Every day became a rat run of avoiding uncaring pedestrians with faces stuck in phones, cyclists and car drivers cutting you up. My head could no longer take the stress, it was get out or have a breakdown. I guess its a little different in your game not having to stop and start every 100 metres and for the most part you get to relax a bit on non city roads. Good Luck for your future, I wish you well.

Being in London whether that is driving, walking or using the tube can be a pain. I used to drive/train to work for customers now and again, and 100% hated it. Before congestion zones drove once right through the centre, stuck for 5 hours.

Loved the video, yes had a few sorties in London when I was driving most was at Smithfield market ,a few pick ups after unloaded, a bit daunting at first especially with an articulated vehicle, but the more you were there it got easier, been retired for 14 years now ,sort of miss the fun and my mates 🙂👍

As a minicabbie in London I improved my driving skills enormously. When the lights go green I look in both mirrors for bikes before pulling away. Seen so many bikers get hit in front of me, it made me aware. Driven 350000 miles on those roads with passengers on board, zero accidents. Was close many times but Polish Bart pulled it out of the bag every time. This video is such a nostalgia trip for me. Used to drive for DataCars. Now I do IT in Poland. Missing London but will probably never come back... we are not welcome anymore.

6.46 cars without correct residential or business permits or parked illegal are taken to the car pound using these type hihab vehicles across London, you pay the parking fine , plus removal cost and I think there is a daily storage charge as well to retrieve your vehicle which you have to collect from the pound which may be some miles away or even in a different borough.

As a HGV driver for a supermarket chain, delivering to South Wales and the West, it’s bad enough driving into Bristol and Cardiff. London seems like another level entirely. Massive respect for how easy you made it look 👋🏻

I used to deliver to London, nightmare you have to have your eyes everywhere, I was delivering near the spurs ground, parked up to do my delivery, two weeks later my boss got a parking ticket for £120, I only went inside the site to ask them to open the gate so I could back into unload.

As a cyclist it's cool to see what driving through london looks like from a trucker's perspective. I like your patient style of driving. I get your point about hi- viz, actually I personally wear it. But I do wonder if everyone wears hi viz that some drivers just don't get used to looking for things that don't flash , ie they just get into the habit of lazy checking and then when they hit a cyclist without looking they use the excuse that they weren't wearing high viz. Nice content.

Although I don't cycle as much as I used to when I do cycle I always wear hi vis..better to be seen by other road users both day & night. I also use a reflective band and reflectors on my wheels.....
