The fact that the mini is upgradable, and your monitor does not become useless when some hardware in your computer becomes outdated makes it the winner. It really annoys me that my 2019 imac has a screen that is just as good as the modern imac, but it is useless because it is chained to the outdated computing parts. They should have made the imac a mac mini that docks onto a monitor.

The mini isn't actually upgradeable. The storage is a separate module but it's still cryptographically locked to the SOC. The only way you can upgrade the storage is by desoldering the nand chips and soldering on higher capacity ones to keep the lockchip onboard untouched... It's absurd to call that upgradable. I personally don't view storage as a real limit though, external drives and network storage has so many options, just pick what suits you. But the problem with it is that it is significantly pricier than the M4 MM with a cheaper 4K monitor (even Dell has nice options below 300usd like that S2722QC). Then you probably already have a keyboard and mouse, at least I do. Granted the iMac has nice integrated speakers, center stage camera, mic, great screen (albeit small in my opinion), but for the price of the iMac I can the best of both worlds which is buy a base MBA (ok, still M3, but with M4 next march/april) that also as great screen, webcam, mic, speakers etc. and a 4K 27” monitor. And in this case I have the versatility of the MM (wel, kinda, you need dongles 😂) and the portability of a laptop. I use it with the monitor when I want to do some web surfing, or to really enjoy some media. When I want to play my games I pull the cord on the USB C Apple media adapter and play on the iPad like always. The M4 product generation is amazing. My only suggestion would be to carefully consider your own use case. Yes, the M4 Pro Mac Mini gets you (and me) excited. It's a non issue really becasue for the Mac Mini you can buy a monitor with integrated speakers like the iMac has. Probably not as good as the iMac's but if you care about sound quality you would use external speakers on the either set up any way.

Prosumer question. If you could only upgrade one thing on the base model m4 mac mini, either upgrade to the 512GB storage or the 24GB of unified memory, which would it be? I already have an iMac for daily use, but I wan't the mac mini strictly as prosumer home studio computer with minimal software on it, just software to do audio production including using software instruments (with Logic Pro, Protools, Kontakt), occasional video editing with Final Cut (4k footage, but mostly rendering out to 1080P video e.g, a music film clip) and photo editing with Affinity Photo. I have external ssd storage to edit from, the mac mini will only host the Applications. Edit: I have a intel based 2017 iMac that I'm upgrading from, sick of seeing the beach ball!

I had an M1 iMac, brilliant machine but that 27inch Studio display and M4 mini was a worthy upgrade,,I think reality is neither the iMac or mini would be a wrong choice. Both very nice products.
@rogermuggleton81275 күн бұрын
Horses for courses. The iMac is really ideal for public-facing tasks such as reception desks where the workload is light, the back of the machine can be very tidy - this is the part the public sees. Most people won't be doing complex 4K video editing so the binned M4 model is fine. My desktop is very messy, a Mac studio with a cheap 27 inch monitor, multiple drives, wired keyboard and mouse receiver, USB printers and speakers etc all plugged in. The view of the back of my desk is a horror. But only the wall sees that. An iMac isn't my choice but can be ideal for an image-conscious office.

Not sure what companies you’ve worked at Luke, but every company I have worked for used laptops and docking stations. All-in-one’s don’t work well if employees need to or want to work remotely. It also means the office set up is flexible; no employee is tied to a specific desk.

My 2020 M1 Mac 512 Gb mini drives 2 x 23” monitors, boots from an external 2 TB drive and basically runs cool at 48C. I’m mostly using the latest Pro Tools but Davinci Resolve also runs at the same temp. I have not heard fan noise in 4 years.
@dredd55804 күн бұрын
I installed a fan control on my m4 mini pro and just run the fans at 20 percent past 65c and it never gets past 75c playing games. Before it would go to 90c and it is still wisper quiet.

I picked up an M4 iMac with the 24GB RAM and 512GB storage. I upgraded from a 2019 27" intel iMac. I do miss the big display compared to the old iMac. My only other issue is that this iMac will eject my external disks quite regularly on it's own. Sometimes I have to reboot to get them back on line. Those are important as with 512GB of storage it would not take very long to filler up. Hopefully that problem works itself out. It's also disheartening when Apple longer offers the color matching options on the numbered magic keyboards, and trackpad. I use the trackpad WAY more than the mouse. While trivial, I also miss the Apple logo on the front of the machine too. That however can be rectified. In all it's fast, and quiet, and works well. I just have to work out the kinks.
@bennym19565 күн бұрын
Geez. I wouldn't want to deal with kinks in any new Mac.
@FDNY82315 күн бұрын
@@bennym1956 I mean more MY kinks than the machines. IE: Figuring out how everything works, and it's total capabilities. Coming from intel the fact that some items I used before may not work with Apple Silicon, and figuring ways around that if possible. Those are the kinks I'm talking about.

Looking at your example Mac Mini setup, there should be a hole cutout in the lower portion of the Studio Display stand so you can place the Mac Mini on the base of the monitor and run you cables directly out the back.

brilliant video absolutely spot on . For me I purchased my first Apple computer ( I've had iPads and phones for years) my first Apple computer about two years ago A imac M1 don't get me wrong I've enjoyed having it and it still does what I need to do , at times it does struggle with doing photography imagery or video . Knowing what i know now and I didn't know two years ago I wish I purchased a separate screen and keyboard option . now I would like to have the Mac mini M4 but I also have to purchase a screen as you have mentioned .... I'm also waiting for the new M4 studio to be released to see if it's just worth hanging on for a moment ... thanks for the video 10/10 ❤

I’ve just pulled the trigger on the base m4 mini, but with 24GB Ram (£799). Coming from an old 27” iMac (2010). Keeping my keyboard/mouse. Bought a 27” 4K Dell monitor (S2722QC - £260 on a deal price), a 2TB M.2 drive (Crucial gen 4 P310) with Thunderbolt 4 enclosure (Graugear 40Gbps) (Home and Applications to go on that), and a 4TB usbc storage drive for Time Machine. All in (based in UK) that came to £1350. Now all I need to do is make it last the 14 years the iMac did…

One of the differences not mentioned here is the 5 USB-C ports on the Mac mini with only two on the very basic iMac 24. So add the price of a hub to the iMac to get equity?
@mendodsoregonbackroads66325 күн бұрын
My setup comparison would not be the base models, because the storage is inadequate and in the case of the iMac Touch ID doesn’t come on the binned chips for some reason. So comparing straight across the board as much as possible with All Apple products it would be. iMac 16GB/1TB with 10 core CPU 10 core GPU $1,899 Vs. Mac Mini 16/1TB with 10 core CPU 10 core GPU $999 + Studio Display $1,599 + Magic Mouse $99 Magic Keyboard with Touch ID $149 Total $2,846 So the iMac setup is more expensive, is not an all in one but it is modular. The fact that the storage is removable at this point is a big nothing because there nothing to replace it with, unless Dos Dude does it for you. The upside with the mini setup is a larger 27” screen, but I’m OK with the 24” size, been using one since 2020 and honestly it fine.

Question: Where can one find the customized keyboard that you have?
@WillWatchAnything5 күн бұрын
There’s actually a case for both. If you want the convenience of having everything in one package and working out of the box the iMac is for you. However if you prefer to have some customization in choosing your own accessories the Mini is the better option. It really boils down to a matter of personal preference and application.

I have a 27" I5 iMac from 2019. I love the "All In One" solution because it takes less space on my tiny desktop. I would like to upgrade to a new iMac, but only 4 USBC/Lightning Ports and no SD Card Slot is a no go for me. The only option is a mac Studio - but it's too expensive for my use. Sorry Apple :(

if it is to put a 60 HZ screen on the mini, (does it goes higher?) it is worth going to any good FHD pc screen, you have awesome ones for 150$, even 32" models for 250$. same for the PC keyboard amd mose, you get either a better but also a cheaper one that makes the Mini worth. Also a cheap mini is fine but a waxed out version has no sens compared to a high end pc.
@23applejellyКүн бұрын
I agree the Mini is more powerful and flexible. If you want Apple retina like I do and have the cash, adding a 27" Studio Display is a sweet setup. However I like a second monitor and dual Studio Displays are too rich would take up just too much of my desk. Thinking an iMac with Studio Display gets you dual retina screens for less cash and space. Could also go Macbook as the computer and second screen, but that is a much smaller screen or a lot more money for the larger laptops. Haven't found a third party monitor that I personally would want to mix with an ASD.
@bloodknottrevelian33964 күн бұрын
I have a 27” IMac which I run with a second 27” Acer monitor, the problem with the new models is 24” display, as I’m in my senior years I can’t use the Magic Mouse for long periods, the fingers start to become uncomfortable so I have a chunkier orthopaedic wireless mouse. The Magic Keyboard is ok but I do prefer a full sized keyboard. So it looks like a Mac Mini for me with the full spec chip.

IF you are considering the m4 iMac or the m4 Mac mini, you are not looking at the binned m4 but rather the equivalent chipset. This is the though choice, are you okay with the all-in-screen? are you okay potentially going down from a 27" display, are you ok with it being less portable, are you okay with slight less ports and so on. Anyways, nice video and I do appreciate the comparison!
@gregclare4 күн бұрын
The easy choice was made for me. Only 24” screen on iMac these days. I’m upgrading from my old late 2014 5K 27” iMac. I can’t go back from a 5K 27” screen. But, it also means an expensive upgrade to go to Mac Mini + Studio Display. If they still did 27” iMac it’d be a smoother upgrade path!

i currently have an iMac pro with its 5K screen. and i really like it. BUT... it's an intel and it's getting to be time to replace it. you didn't say it in so many words when you said you couls hook up your dell monitor to the mac mini, but we all kinda know... monitors will outlive the computers they're attached to. it kinda ticks me off that i'll have to trash my 5K screen when i replace the computer (unless juicy crumb comes up wit a conversion kit for the iMac Pro). as a result, i don't ever think i'll but another iMac. the modular nature of the mac mini is preferable, at least to me.

If I remember correctly there were kits for using an old iMac with the previous mini form factor, including a bracket to hold the mini on the back. Is there any such thing for the new form factor?
