I don't know why more devs keep focusing on graphics instead of the core gameplay experience

Because a small but very loud segment of gamers keeps demanding visual fidelity. Which I used to get back in ye olde PS1/2 era, but beyond around 2005 it just gets ridiculous. I get harping on a game that looks awful (Gollum), but there's no need to demand realistic graphics as the 'gold standard' for games. It's not even a style, it's a cop-out, you can't even call realism a 'style'.

I think the need to make „better graphics“ instead of going for unique graphics is another side of that problem. If I saw a screenshot of a game like The Long Dark or Borderlands, just to pick two examples, I would immediately recognize these games just from the art style. Looking at a still from Immortals of Aveum, there might be a few distinct details to set it apart, but it doesn’t have that unique look which, if there is a lack of, I often find myself quitting a game for. Its just so generic that I have a hard time enjoying to see it for more than a few hours. Not that my pc could run it.

​@@beckstheimpatient4135not exactly. It is mainly because of who leads developer companies, which are people that bring money to the company... marketing. Graphics are easy to understand and present to costumers. Creating trailers is self explanatory and easy to reproduce. Graphics are also an easy way to confuse a costumer into thinking that a game quality is higher due to graphic detail looking more professional. A large part of development company is not made of artist and developers with a vision but of people that understand economics and how to bring in more money. This also means that unless you can present these people somethig which is easy to understand for someone who does not play games, it will most likely not enter full development process. They only hear to two main themes. How m7ch revenue will the product bring in, and how presentable it is on official channels.

Fun Fact, The hardest encounters in this game are the fight against the secret bosses called "The Six".... these encounters requires u to finish the game first to even stand a chance against them

We are forever cursed with the Unreal Engine. With Unreal Engine 4 virtually every game had shader compilation stutter and/or traversal stutter. Now we are starting to see Unreal Engine 5 games and not only do we get shader compilation stutter and traversal stutter but we get poor performance that is not justified by the better Unreal Engine 5 vs Unreal Engine 4 graphics. Every game is going to be released on Unreal Engine 5 from now on, and this is what we to look forward to?

Budget title is 30-40 dollars, 60 bucks can still be considered full price, and for an average game with 12 hours of gameplay is not very good. If anyone wants to play this, the best way is subscribing for EA play pro for 1 month, which I thinks is 15 bucks, and cancelling afterwards.

Whenever you were talking about the tone and pacing issues, I found myself brought back to Mass Effect 3. I know a lot of the fandom are quite down on that game, and it certainly didn't have the same initial impact as 2 (especially with how the ending was originally structured...yeesh...), but having played through the trilogy several times, 3 has become my favourite. One thing I think it does well is the moments of relief aboard the Normandy or on the Citadel amidst the seriousness of the war. Often, the humour comes across as characters on the edge, reaching for a bit of levity to stop from breaking entirely. It makes them more relatable without skewing into the realms of frivolous or whacky (except for the Citadel DLC, but the whole point of that was to be a lighthearted swansong for the trilogy). And when things do get serious, they *generally* do a good job of conveying that seriousness.

Great review! Though I don't agree with the narrative of game length = value. In my opinion it's more about the quality of the overall experience. Uncharted games are a good example of mostly linear focused campaigns that are relatively short in length and still fulfilling experiences that were worth the price tag at launch. Associating game length to value perpetuates the perception that games need to be lengthy to award a certain price tag, triggering developers to consider filler content (even if it's boring content) to reach that value benchmark.

I also think price plays a big part in this. If your game is quality but lacks quantity there’s not gonna be much content or probably replay value and it doesn’t feel like the game is worth the price necessarily even if it’s good because there’s not much to do. There are fantastic indie games that take this approach and even something like AC Mirage did this because they knew it was a smaller game than they’ve been releasing recently. Take for example something like Batman Arkham Asylum which is linear (albeit metroidvania) and only takes around 10-12 hours to beat if you run through the game. However there are tons of cool Easter eggs and riddler challenges to go back and complete and areas to explore even after you beat the game. There’s also the challenge maps section which provides a lot of replay with both stealth and combat and definitely made the price tag feel worth it.

I usually end up thinking certain games look beautiful that other people say don’t look up to snuff. And I give a lot of games a pass in certain areas or can look at the more minute details and be impressed where others may gloss over things like that. But I was surprised that I did not find Immortals to be a very good looking game on console. It’s locked to 60 fps, which is probably why. And I suspect has been heavily downgraded to achieve this. It has no ‘Quality’ Mode for comparison. But after seeing a game like Remnant 2, using only Nanite and no other big UE5 feature set, Immortals is a far fall from that. It has a lot of blurry textures in general, and there is a fuzzy look to the presentation overall like it never comes into focus. But a lot of texture work is downright pixelated. Whether this is intended or a bug like we saw with Dead Space on PS5 at release (which was fixed), I’m not sure. It is not a very good looking game at all and I expected a lot more out of a UE5 release. If this is the benchmark for these games on console moving forward in an engine like this, we’re in for a bumpy ride.

The blurriness to the textures and overall poor visual clarity is one of my biggest issues with the look of recent games. I'm glad to hear you Nanite helped with Remnant 2. I only saw the tech in Fortnite and it really makes a big difference. Do the particle effects and other things get in the way as well? Like it doesn't look bad, but there is so much happening that I can barely tell what's going on sometimes.

So I'm watching this after the game is out, and as soon Luke said that the guy behind this game was also behind some of the most popular COD games, it immediately made everything make sense on why this game is failing so hard. Thanks, Luke: among other good reasons I watch your reviews to determine if a game is worth watching via a good playthrough (my own wonderful extra sci-fi fantasy movie world of hours upon hours of animated stories you only very rarely get from a film studio). In that respect your chapter on "Tone" was a big warning sign maybe only to dip into the great visuals but be prepared to quit once the stupid funny characters get to be unbearable. Idk I'm not a huge fan of the dialog in this game. I heard some compare it to MCU style humor and I don't see it lol. I'm glad they kinda Rush through the story segments. Reminds me of Wolfenstein 2009. For some reason I got vibes of Doom and Homefront. There is something missing I feel, but it's not terrible. The boss battles can be annoying too. A sequel has so much potential. Hopefully this game gets some type of traction with it being one of the first UE5 title and one of EAs recent 👌👍

I've just started Immortals and I'm 3hrs in just started chapter 5 but as someone with autism on the lower spectrum of a special needs not high end but there some elements I struggle with more so button mashing or QTE Quick switching why I can't play COD ONLINE but I enjoy the campaign if I can handle it depends So personally I'M little disappointed in the lack of accessibility in the game tho ☹️.. Given I've been amazed in how far with come with accepting of accessibility needed people what games and Studios going above and beyond in recent years I was really looking forward to this game it looks really cool but I'm not 100% sure if I'll be able to finish it plus it looks good but playing the game something is missing I just can't get into the game it's not hitting as hard as I thought I would enjoy the game

The hilarious part is that rigs with that card are mid range systems. A mid range pc should EASILY be able to run modern games on at least 1080p 60fps with high settings. This game doesn’t even look anywhere near good enough to justify its performance, it’s just atrocious optimization. It’s the kind of performance I’d expect running a modern game on something like a 1050ti not a card that’s barely 3 years old!

This year has been rough for pc gaming and if it continues where not even midrange builds with gear not even 3 years old can’t handle 1080 60 then idk if PC gaming is what I want to continue with because at that point if a Xbox or PlayStation that’s 500 bucks will play games 1080 60 longer then your PC then why even get the PC at that point. What’s interesting is you depart significantly with Skillup in your criticism of the tone. He says it’s basically Guardians of the Galaxy with Call of Duty pace. In his piece he separates two things which struck me as interesting. 1. The characters don’t take themselves seriously but 2. They take what is happening seriously. But I guess I’ll find out when I get around to this game. Can’t find a PS5 / Series X comparison yet and my PC will cry trying to play this.

Tbf, I’m pretty sure the game is finished. Luke said in his review that other than some frame rate drops, the game ran well and didn’t have any bugs worthy of note. Just because it has more potential to be a better game doesn’t mean that it’s not finished.

Before my comment, I did like the video and love your content… but this review alone with 5 others displays the issue with creator reviews currently. You guys review every game as if it should be a triple A masterpiece! If you take this game for what it is, a change of pace, good looking, fun combat experience, it is a good game!!! Definitely over priced but it is not just the devs that find themselves in same game cycles! The reviews are all reviewed the same way.. I know all subjective, but just a thought! Nice review Luke, I think all your standpoints are valid and I agree that we should not lose focus of the goods parts. I like this game, it's just pure fun when I look at the gameplay. If it looks good and if it's fun to play, then I'm sold. It's like a mix of Doom Eternal and Anthem, but with fantasy weapons. I won't buy any of the other big games released in this period but I will definitely buy this game.

I think the only "humor" the game/devs managed with this game, is it's pricetag. It's really $60 ? wake me up when it's like $20, then I might give it proper chance. And no, I'm not gonna be "lenient" because its a 'new' studio and whatnot. They themselves set the bar with that pricetag - for that price, I expect..better things. So if the devs/writers really did try to be funny in the game, it seems, as I said, the only thing funny is the price tag. Buuut, I'm sure there's people that will enjoy this game. I mean we have a game like Baldur's Gate 3 for the same price tag so...I dunno.

The issue with the tone is something I noticed in the first stuff I saw a few months back. Devon has a bad case of "insufferable pretentiousness" . It was an instant turn-off, amongst a few other things.

So, repetitive, unoptimized (No High end system should struggle to hold 60fps on UE5), and stale combat at full price (yes 60$ is FULL price, not budget). Personally I think a 12 hour campaign is the minimum for 60$, it always has been so I'm not complaining specially when you can draw it out to a 15-18hour completionist run, but I'm expecting unique encounters, engaging combat and Interesting Non-Recycled Boss fights all the way. This right here is just LAZY EYE CANDY. Hard pass. I do appreciate Gina Torres though so points for that absolute legend. Thank you for the review, new to your channel and really loving it.

I've seen a lot of reviews talking about the tone...and I gotta be honest, I know people who should be serious in serious roles who act nonchalantly as if nothing major will happen because "i got this" or they're either coping with the trauma of war by using humor. So for me. Using humor to mask fear is a very normal trend in general.

I know I'm late to this but all of these criticisms were warranted and valid. It didn't feel like you were going out of your way to take this game apart from everything you listed. I agreed with a lot of the points about combat and narrative pacing and completely with the Devyn point it did feel out of left field and some weird indirect commentary on the dev's part about communism in real life. Overall though it is a solid game if you get it on sale, and it actually just became one of the free monthly games for PS + this month.

"12 to 16 hours" short game and it's boring in the end ???, i just played FF16 86 hours game with all the side quest, they put the boring parts between the main missions and the important side quests open ups only near the end, this is how you make a game long and the boring part tolerant..

wait what .... ellie in the last of us was not a last hope or anything. there were many other children that were immune and that the fireflies killed to try to make a cure. She was never touted out as the chosen one or miracle child lol. Replay the last level and listen to the clues.
