Ep1 Complete Beatles Journey "I Saw Her Standing There"

This was a Swedish music program where most of the acts were traditional 50s rock. The male host was visibly freaked out by the rowdy nature of this band ... and so was the audience! These were reserved Swedes, clapping along with the music was peak response for them. At 3:00 when Paul does that scream, they've never heard anyone do that. You can see the entire audience startled by it. It's like an electric shock. And the world was never the same.

This was an unrehearsed encore. And of course they do it flawlessly. When I watch these old videos, I'm always struck by how much of the work McCartney is doing onstage. He's incredibly high energy and the whole band feeds off it.

Hi HBK Luke. You nailed it when you mentioned the Chuck Berry vibe. Paul once admitted in an interview that he snipped the bass line from Berry's, "I'm Talking About You". The live video is great, but you really need to hear the studio album versions. They're timeless.

George's guitar is not properly amplified, and Paul's microphone is drowned out by John's. That happens sometimes on a live performance.

That’s in France right before the first Sullivan Show in America. They just went number one here when they were there. How cool is that? We needed them here in America it healed a Nation after President Kennedy was assassinated in November. They really took American minds off that and moved us forward. God works in mysterious ways..

The TV crew had changed the mic levels, this number wasn't planned - it was co-host and Swedish Radio DJ Klas Burling who coaxed the two extra numbers. I guess the TV crew adjusted the vocal balance after a while, but George's amp mic remained turned off.

This is one of my favorite early Beatles songs. The mix was a little off in this but they had very primitive equipment to work with. They still sounded great. They all worked very hard on stage. I believe that show was in Sweden and the audience was much tamer and more polite, which actually allowed us to hear the music. Great reaction. I love joining you on this journey. 🌺✌️

I'm so excited you're going to do them all! :) Someone may have told you that they were very seasoned musicians by the time they recorded anything from their days not just at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, but from their sting in Germany. They played nightly for hours and hours on end at a club on the Reeperbahn in a seedy part of town. They slept in an unused theatre across the street (the Bambi Kino). They got their full musical chops during those days. Their gig there ended when George was deported (he was underage). They kept up with the nightly grind with the aid of certain substances. It was manager Brian Epstein who cleaned them up and made them presentable. They were always lovable. A bit about Ringo's drumming. He gets dissed a bit at times because he isn't flashy, but some of the best drummers out there did a video on him and how much they admire him. He played for the song not for himself, and he did it perfectly every time.

This TV show appearance was fun, but the tight, well-mixed studio version is 10x better. I do think listening to their albums in chronological order is the best way to journey thru their catalogue, as they evolve and mature. Looking forward to your future reactions.

Love your comment about four brilliant musicians with no kind of individuality but the band itself, all four always shine all over any song and performance, each one have their own individual magic but combined all four is what has made them always the best. Never seen this video before and I'm quite surprise with the audience so respectful, it's not only a very intimate show, but also the boys are very close to the people and even like that nobody is screaming without stopping, only as a response to Paul's great scream in the middle of the song, that was fantastic, his scream and the answer of the audience!! This presentation was not held in the United States for sure 😄😄 Great beginning of this journey Luke, you will enjoy it as much as us all!!!

You're right - this was from a Swedish TV pop music Show called 'Drop-In'. IIRC, it was recorded around early-mid-1963, so although Beatlemania was already building in the UK the band was not yet so well known on the Continent other than in Hamburg, and they had yet to make an impact in the US. I love this show because not only is the screaming less intrusive but you can feel they're still hungry for success, going all out to win over this audience of reserved, mostly young Swedes. Needless to say, by the end of the set (they did a couple of encores after this one, including Paul's screaming party-piece/ audience grabbing-by-the-throat-and-not-letting-go number, his rendition of Little Richard's Long Tall Sally/Have Some Fun Tonight), they had the audience rocking the roof off! Highly recommended - you should be able to find the whole show on YT: 'Beatles Live Swedish TV 1963' except that unfortunately the audio on She Loves You had been blocked last time I looked. These early shows show why the world fell in love with these four young men and their already strangely captivating new music. :-)

I have just seen the complete video and the audio isn't blocked in any song 😀Loved the beginning when the host is announcing the show and the great cheer indicates when the boys arrive, then the happy faces of the audience but still very well behaved, admirable. And finally in the last song the musicians who are getting ready for the next act seem to enjoy the music very much, also the last clapping with these lads joining is priceless!! It's a very intimate show and very polite at the same time, everyone seems to enjoy it very much, something impossible to achieve later and I think that was largely what fed them up in the end, what a shame!! Thanks again 👍

@@juanita6479 - A great show with GOOD audio equipment is their "Concert for Shell in Australia" (I think 1964). Likely on YT. The audience there was also told to behave or the show would be shut down so you can actually hear them!

I will watch this journey with great interest. Great idea to do it this way. Keep in mind, you just watched a very entertaining LIVE version of this, and technically, the studio version is what people heard on the radio in the 60s, and studio versions are always edited and there are numerous takes to get the best sound and version of the song.

I have great memories of singing both of these songs from the same 45 at the top of my voice with my brother while sitting in the back seat of our family car. Singing them over and over and over again, driving our parents crazy.

This is youtube and recorded versions are much more likely to get a copyright strike than live versions. So I can see the wisdom in using the live video. And it's cool to see the Beatles in a live performance with all that entails. 😀We can all listen to the recording on our own time, as I'm sure Luke will do.

The vast majority of popular songs from this era were about boy-girl love. The Beatles were never expecting a life-long career of playing in a band, that was something that never really happened up until they came along and changed popular music forever.

Yes, the Beatles were great live but concerts in the 60's were not recorded in stereo! You must hear the studio version for the full stereo effect!😊

Was very excited to see you start this journey until I saw that it was a live version you chose. The studio versions sound MUCH better. With extremely rare exceptions, a studio version will sound better than a live version for any song from any artist.

Yes, John once said, "If you wanted to give R&R another name, it'd be Chuck Berry." Very rocking song. Sadly, you miss some of the harmonies on the record with the live version. But you get more of the sense of the times. Their music & look was very unique to anything else back then. Their hair was considered to be extremely long as most guys had crew cuts back then.

I love this song but the only way to hear the full version is from the studio recording. For some reason, the Beatles would regularly shorten this song when they played it live, dispensing with the second Bridge -- "Well my heart went boom, when she crossed the room..." -- coming out of the guitar solo. Sadly...I don't know why they did this because that Bridge is PERFECT, but they felt it was...I don't know...too same-y? It bothers me because the song is the best and how could they reduce something that was so spot-on, just as it was on the album, but there you go. I also love the George Harrison guitar solo on the album which, again, is changed for live performances. It's mystifying, but not in a good way. :(

Please keep in mind that George Martin did not put singles on Beatles albums. The British albums were different from the albums released in the USA.

Paul had to be one of the most melodic bassists ever. Ringo was also a great drummer, not fancy but played what needed to be played all through their varied musical incarnations. You could take any Beatles' song and isolate the bass or drums and know what the song was. Certainly not true on most bands. Add to that the antiquated equipment and sound systems they had to use. When I saw them at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto they had to use the overhead hockey commentators speakers. 😫😫

It'IS very difficult to play the bass and sing because what he is playing doesn't match the melodies at all. That is why you don't see a lot of bass players that sing lead, many of them don't sing at all, even back up. Ringo was TAME here compared to how he goes wild on the drums on "I Saw Her Standing There" at the Washington Coliseum in D.C on Feb 11, 1964, there first U.S. concert. Disappointed you are listening to live version. You will never be able to appreciate their music that way due to the screaming fans. Please consider listening to the true album versions or you will be disappointed too. Not too much screaming in this cut but they sound bad here compared to the album.

@@GBURGE55 If this version was what was being played on the radio, was on Meet the Beatles and the b-side to I Want to Hold Your Hand, Beatlemania would not had been as great. Listen to the live stuff, after you've heard all the studio tracks. I think if HBK hadn't phrased this as Track 1 Album 1, I'd had been alright. This is one of my favorite songs from the Beatles, even now. He needs to hear the recording. Don't you think?

Yes. This version was very bad. If you think this was fantastic, listen to the studio version, and you will be totally knocked out. It is incredible. You really should do the studio versions so you can get the full impact of their recordings.

John Lennon was a much better musician & song writer than Paul McCartney. Also George too, was a good.musician & songwriter. Paul always wanted to be the 'front man' which is why they were at odds with one another. I think the Beatles would have been nothing without John Lennon. I grew up with their music and it was always known early on that Paul thought he was in charge!

It’s up for debate on who the better songwriter was but Paul was without a doubt the best musician in the Beatles. John was a good musician but he was probably the least skilled out of the 4. Also John and Paul were the front men and Paul didn’t need to fight for it. It came naturally to him so he usually took the role of doing the speaking and introducing. The Beatles wouldn’t have been as successful without John but they wouldn’t have even gotten out of Liverpool if it wasn’t for Paul. Paul always made them work harder. Other Quarrymen members remember Paul arranging things and telling everyone what to play even in the early days. It was his song, “Like Dreamers Do,” which got them signed. John was fine with messing around and having mediocre players like his friend Stu, but Paul wanted him out and always pushed them to be their best

John Lennon was an amazing musician and songwriter who wrote perhaps much of the best music of all-time, but Paul was even better. That's one of the reasons The Beatles were so fantastic. Personally, I think Paul was a better songwriter, but it's one of life's great tragedies that John was taken so young, because I believe he had much more greatness in him left to share. . . . And maybe it's my opinion that Paul was a better bassist, drummer, and pianist than John, but I am sure the concensus agrees Paul was a more versatile singer, with a greater range, sharper and more technically precise phrasing, and a more aesthetically pleasing timbre. Your statement is definitely up for debate. 🍎🍊
