This video features the world premiere of new works composed for Hammond organ and ensemble. The piece is made up of nine smaller pieces presented as one 80 minute entity to be presented in an uninterrupted continuous format for your listening pleasure.
Featuring the unmistakeable and timeless voice of the Hammond Tonewheel Organ paired with its longtime associate, the Leslie rotating speaker cabinet, these works explore possibilities offered by the instrument and picks apart every feature of how it produces and modifies its own sound.
The Hammond organ has not previously been composed for in our modern practice, and may not see a growing repertoire as the instrument itself is a dwindling population. The last Hammond Tonewheel Organ was produced in 1970, and the Hammond company is now under Suzuki ownership. Hammond organs will likely never be produced again. As existing units are lost to neglect and destructive modification, the number of living instruments only declines. Maybe with a revival of interest in the importance of and greater appreciation of the influence of these instruments will help to preserve the instruments that remain.
Let the revival begin with The Hammond Suite.
