本曲爲美國當代作曲家丹尼爾．埃爾德（Daniel Elder, b.1986）Three Nocturnes（三首夜曲）的最後一首。整首歌的節奏爲小步舞曲般的三拍子，速度是類似人類心跳的每分鐘 78 拍到 66 拍。埃爾德說這是首簡單、使人心安的歌，本作品的力量「來自它的質樸；」 母親可以唱這首歌給孩子聽，藉此驅走對黑暗和夜之寂寥的恐懼。睡眠又暗喻死亡，因此它也可用以慰喪。
埃爾德出身美國南部，作品既抒情也寫景，有世俗、也有宗教，有多首作品獲得知名出版社發行。這首 〈搖籃曲〉 完成時他還不到二十五歲。埃爾德也寫詩，本曲的詞就是他的作品。他用簡潔的文字描寫、比對白天與黑夜。日月星辰、山海、草地、棕櫚樹、葉子等等的鋪陳使得曲中有畫。歌詞觸及視、聽、味等五感，加上優美的旋律、醇厚的和聲，讓這首歌散發出舒心的氛圍。
