We love Bob! What a delightful guy... he explains things well, gives good advice, and is funny! I especially love how he asks for or suggests something, then Lulu asks for or suggests an alternate or her idea of an improvement, and Bob just repeats what he said the first time, and keeps repeating until Lulu gets on board with his original idea. Get in contact with someone from the van manufacturing people and ask what to do about the door handle, they might have the best solution. You might have to go through the metal frame because the plastic will eventually give way and pull the plastic and it will look pretty bad.

Lulu, Amazon has plastic handles typically used for cabinet pulls. they have really good tape on them. need to be sure where you want it 'cause it will not move. The handle on my fridge broke off & very expensive to replace, so i found these & they have worked very well. strong enough to pull fridge door open. the surface you are putting on needs to be smooth. hope this is helpful..the holes would bother me too. thanks to Bob for helping you. He is a gem, as are you. I have no interest in van life, love your personality & upbeat attitude..
