It's also based on the autobiography of E.R. Braithwaite, a black man from British Guyana. It always bugs me when I hear the comedy bit by Bill Burr talking about a "how many times are they going to re-make this movie...white person goes to help black kids at a troubled school", and he doesn't point out (and most commenters don't seem to know) that the original movie was the other way around.

Braithwaite's brilliant, Pulitzer Prize- winning 1959 novel OR the 1967 movie 'To Sir, with Love.' For example: and ironically, it was Sidney Poitier [ who played the teacher ( the Braithwaite character ) in the 1967 film adaptation of Braithwaite's novel ] playing the "troubled black youth" in the 1955 "white person goes too help black kids at a troubled school" movie 'Blackboard Jungle.' But - Braithwaite, and later the 1967 movie, did manage to make it "the other way around" ( based on Braithwaite's experiences teaching. )

But the tone of that movie is quite a bit bleaker and pessimistic than "To Sir, with Love" and the various remake iterations which have followed. "Blackboard Jungle" is more mature and violent, but I always felt it reached for too many rings and wasn't really able to grasp any of them. But your point is well taken.

"To Sir with Love," was such an amazing movie. You should watch it whenever you get a chance. Sidney Poitier such a class act. He received the best actor Oscar in 1964 for his role in "Lillies of the Field." Another terrific movie. Both movies were ground breaking at the time. They dealt with dealing with people based on mutual respect,. The need to look past a person's race, religious faith, ethnicity and seeing their hearts.

She's singing about the most gorgeous black man on the planet, Sidney Poitier. I loved this movie, and we all totally fell in love with him in the early Sixties. Please watch his hit movies, "To Sir with Love", "Lillies of the Field", "A Patch of Blue" (they walked by my Dad's restaurant "Biffs" at 7th and Alvarado in LA. It was right across from MacArthur Park), "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" Read his autobiography. I should read it again, so good! He and Harry Belafonte were friends in competition. Both became huge stars in the early Sixties. Sidney wanted to be an actor and was told his Island accent was too thick, so he listened to the radio and changed his speech himself.

Yea Poitier is the "sir" she is referring to, since that's what they called him. It's a great movie, and the graduation scene in the end where the actress sings this song to him really tugs on the ole heartstrings. It's a totally nonsexual admiration she(and the other students) had for him, even though one might think it's romantic based on the lyrics.

After seeing that movie I decided on a major in education. I taught school for over 44 years and retired several years ago. I don’t regret one day. Thank you Sir for being my inspiration.

Maurice joined her on stage in 2002 and sang a duet, “First of May.” Beautiful and bittersweet song by Bee Gees about two young lovers who grew apart.
