Lining Basin street were Saloons catering
to the more discerning customers,
and mansions which offered beds, gambling,
drinking, entertainment, and ladies for the evening.
Lulu got her start posing for risqué photos in the 1880s,
and in 1894 established her high-end bordello,
Mahogany Hall, in Storyville.
Lulu knew what most of these men
needed after a hard day's 'dealings'.
She could make their dreams come true at
Mahogany Hall....as she had plenty of her own.
Oddie Beau's ODDNESS Urban exploration & famous historical features! vintage crime cases & eccentric people from the past! ...and other weird stuff :) ....a dusty store window, filled with ancient alluring oddities. Once you've entered, you'll never want to leave. Quality over quantity.

Every week I get emails from companies offering me money and goods if I promote their products during my video (you may have seen this in many KZbin videos) ...well I adamantly refuse to do it...Why? So my Patreon members can enjoy a totally ad-free experience; plus I realise that on KZbin ads are placed - what many don't realise is that recently KZbin have a new policy where they're placing their own ads on creators videos. This can be annoying I realise, but please understand I'm doing my best to continue to bring you content here. Thanks for your understanding :) Many thanks to my Patreon members for making this possible! 💚 Some of the topics discussed on the 'blah blah' towards the end of video, because of the upload date, (April 2020) ..may no longer be relevant. Don't accept cheap copies - no corners cut here! Ask for the original ObsoleteOddity! Support with rewards (dozens of videos to unlock - twice monthly historical features & monthly vintage give aways!) It could be your turn next 🥳 www.patreon.com/ObsoleteOddity

Born and raised in New Orleans and fascinated by the history. I must say, I have researched Storyville and I have never come across some of the photos that you have shown here so very impressed! The Iberville projects were built on the grounds of what once was Storyville, they were torn down after Katrina. Many of the jazz greats like Jellyroll Norton and Louis Armstrong got their start by performing at the bordello houses in Storyville. The photographer Bellocq is buried in New Orleans. His brother was a priest and he destroyed hundreds of negatives of Storyville so not much has survived. I owned an exact reproduction of the "blue book" in the early seventies and since Storyville was on the railroad line, it was distributed to tourist coming off the train to lure them. The Navy put an end to Storyville because of its proximity to the port and many of the sailors would frequent the houses and return with venereal diseases. The houses were decorated with the finest artwork, tapestries and fabrics from France. I once saw a crystal chandelier in the late sixties on Royal Street which is famous for antiques which hung in Mohagany Hall. It was a work of art and each house tried to outdue the other in furnishings and decor. The historical Society in the French quarter has a fascinating display of photos and history on Storyville which can be viewed. Great work on your presentation and research as always.

it's so sad that mahogany hall was demolished, it would be wonderful to be able to see it today.
@MusicLeeSarah
@MusicLeeSarah 2 жыл бұрын
I can't remember when they said it was demolished but if it was not pre Katrina after Katrina it would have had to have been demolished, based on its location. (Keep in mind though I'm not from New Orleans so I could be wrong but even if it didn't flood, Katrina did so much more damage than any of us can ever imagine. God knows what kind of damage would have been done to the structure regarding safety or even would have still been standing. I wish they would have documented it more in pictures but I'm sure they didn't know the legend and legacy it would become. 💛)

I think the old Storyville complex-the blocks of buildings and saloons would make much a more lucrative tourist attraction and places for historical research than the housing projects they were torn down to build.

When mahogany hall was being sold and torn down, many local gentlemen came forward to buy pieces of it as momentos. I’m be man actually got the magnificent staircase built it into his new mansion for his bride. It was a very distinctive design. Just about every gentleman that visited recognized it. Not me I will be like y'all know the back story about this staircase??? Hell I would have asked to walk down it at my wedding like an aisle after seeing a picture of what this thing supposedly looked like. They say the Titanic had a grand staircase. Looks like the one in the movie. Blows the Titanic movie staircase out of the water. Pun kind of intended LOL (assuming the image I saw is accurate) I know they call it a grand staircase but in this specific piece of stairway Grand is an understatement 💛

Good on her. I have a soft spot for women who reinvented themselves and made the most of what life had to offer in their time. She must have been a formidable woman to have amassed the wealth she did, and the reputation. Bringing the fantasy of the octaroon southern beauties into the rough and tumble of New Orleans was a stroke of genius on her part. Whatever else can be said of her…she lived her life full on and made her mark. Thanks Oddie, for telling her story with your constant care for the humanity of your subject. Light and love to you and Odette.🖤🇨🇦

Me too! "Stabbing with intent to murder." It just seems so intense. Definitely sounds like a possibly premeditated thought out crime! (as opposed to maybe like stabbing with intend to Rob or something ridiculous like that) I want to know when and where and all the circumstances! Whom did she stab? Did she skip out on bond? Was she ever taken to trial? Did the person succumb to their wounds or seek revenge possibly? I have a feeling the stabbing story was one told many of times at the hall

I enjoyed this one very much! My mother-in-law was furious when a Mormon family member revealed that she and her siblings were one quarter Black. I'm glad that her mother didn't suffer from discrimination by whites. Mama didn't quite see it that way! Here in the USA and particularly where I live, near the Cherokee Nation, persons claiming Native American heritage are looked upon with distrust. The tribe thinks that people who's ancestors are not on the rolls are trying to dishonestly obtain Indian benefits. As for me, the proof that I'm part Cherokee is simple. My family was ashamed of it.

Thank you so much for this story. I had never heard of her until now. I'm always fascinated by the obscure Black women in our history who had the independent mindset not to look for a man to take care of them. A pity that she died penniless, but her story is one that should be told more often. Thank you again.

Another fascinating historical adventure, Oddie! That's one of the things I love about your videos, I never know where I'll be swept off to next! :) It could be an vintage house in New York that was home to some rather eccentric individuals, or a true tale of murder, or even like this, the story of a famous Madam I hadn't even heard of. :) I don't even mind that what we're getting on KZbin now as "New Content" is from at least a year ago or longer. Not only because they're that good, but also it's like a little time capsule, which totally fits the themes. :)

Just bought and received in the mail a book called, "The Girl from Storyville" by Frank Yerby... I hope it is as good as his other that I have read called "Goat Song"... Thanks for the upload!!! Rough to have lived such a life only to die penniless for all your troubles...I don't know how these ladies endured to be used in such a way. I reckon they had few options as far as employment goes. Being poor, homeless, and hungry causes your dignity to suffer also.

I'm a christian not a bible basher, but that doesn't mean I don't love history. This was a very interesting and enjoyable in the historical sense. It doesn't surprise me that this occurred in New Orleans. And yes, it saddened me that she died penniless! It seems she didn't have any off spring, so i wondered who her nearest relative could have been and if that linage is still going on! Great piece!
