When Lumas grow up they turn into stars, planets, and galaxies. They transform from living creatures into inanimate objects. Which in a way is them dying. So it makes sense why Lumas would want to die to fulfill their destiny of expanding the cosmos.

For the oldest audience, (which played Mario Galaxy and know a bit of the lore) we all know that Lumas are doing an endless cycle, becoming planets to become again little stars, and so goes on. So the theory here, is that this luma was captured while she was passing by (Which Bowser's army did because its an extremely rare specimen that need to be contained). And since she cannot escape, she can't do her cycle of life, and it makes her a depressive, sad, but mostly DEPRESSIVE character ! That was Kataklysm's class, thank you for reading this brick !

If Luma makes a reappearance in a possible sequel and burns out as they are meant too it would be interesting to see the reaction of the characters to witness its "death". Imagine after having met Luma to see it become a part of the galaxy itself! Also, the prisoners reaction to Luma's words are hilarious.
