11:03 That difference in image quality says all I need to know. It's fantastic!
@amatcia15 жыл бұрын
In many cases huge zoom causes lower resolution, above some zoom value the image does not contain additional details. In addition, in large distance some details are lost because of air moving. One more problem with large zoom is image stabilization. It requires tripod and as a result fast moving objects became hard to catch. I think, practical limit of zoom is about 600mm. Bigger zoom is for some static objects only.
@heroninja11252 жыл бұрын
Only digital zoom causes lower resolution. But the rest is typically true because long zooms are hard to stabilize

Just wanted to thank you for the side by side zoomed in comparison. I have spent maybe 15 hours in photoblogs and review websites, trying to understand the differences that it makes. I am not a photographer or someone that spent so much time on the topic, but I understand the technology behind it very well as I have a technical background. But almost every review I have read had vague terms rather than really showing facts (which is generally indicative of not really understanding the logic being what they are talking about). Your side by side comparison has been more useful in 2 minutes than the 15 hours I have spent on those websites.

I've got both cameras. . It's surprising how much smaller and lighter the fz80 is. And the touch screen is a big plus. However if you want superb quality photos the FZ 1000 wins hands down every time. Particularly in low light. This is due to its outstanding lens and one inch image sensor. If you do want a touch screen the FZ100 11 has one

I've had the FZ80 for a year and am still learning how to use it. But it continues to amaze me with its versatility and that remarkable zoom lens. I'm a birder so I take pictures only in the daytime, so the sensor size works for me. The price for what you get is hard to beat!

Do note the fz80 does 4k but only in 15minute sediments. You can,t set it down using 4k and come back an hour or even a half hour and expect to have video still going. The Panasonic fz2500 has no limit on the size or length of files. This fz1000 has a 30 minute limit on 4k video length. This fz80 has a 15minute limit before you have to press record again
@NorthOlbo Жыл бұрын
Good points. Most “newer” cameras can record past the 29 minute limit on 4K videos. Letting your camera run without pause in 4K will make a HUGE file and may use up your SD card, and heat up your camera to the point it may shut off in hot weather. I

Why is there only weather sealing on the FZ300 with its 1/2.33 inch High MOS sensor , and no weather sealing on the upgraded models like the FZ1000 / FZ2500 with 1inch High MOS censor ??? I think Panasonic dropped the ball with this no-brainer decision , please do not tell me it was to keep costs down as this option alone is a deal-breaker , when it comes to using these cameras year round in inclement weather ! My dilemma is do I sacrifice image quality just to have the piece of mind of water , dust , shock and extreme temps [ freezing ] of filming inside the woods , and not just on the trails ??? I own them both. FZ1000 and delivered Saturday the FZ80. I am VERY surprised at the capabilities of the FZ80. Zoom aside, the touch screen is a plus, the camera is smaller. Picture quality is very close, very close, favoring the FZ1000. I cannot tell the difference in equal settings for video. I like the stereo mic on the FZ80. I'm glad I own them both.

Own them both! Excellent! I just saw today Panasonic has announced the new FZ1000 II, They liked the first one so much the “II” is mechanically similar but notable software photo/video features from the FZ2500 are added, plus a touch sensitive LCD tilting screen. Its a testament to the FZ1000 thats its still almost unchanged. Both great cameras.

Sir, thank you for the review. I’m in the midst of trying to decide between the FZ1000, FZ300 and FZ80! Your other video comparing the FZ1000 and the Nikon P1000 sold me on the Panasonic Lumix line - now I just need to make a decision!
@NorthOlbo6 жыл бұрын
You’re welcome! Obviously I keep coming back to the FZ1000, and I have a FZ2500, its 480mm zoom, touch screen successor. But the FZ1000 is now into its fifth year, and the FZ2500, although great, was a bit too close in specs to cause theFZ1000 owners to upgrade like iphone users would. I have to believe Panasonic has a FZ3000 around the corner, the FZ1000 was SO successful that a worthy follow up is a commercial necessity. And I mean much better than the FZ2500. So I would recommend either buying a second hand FZ80 (last choice), or a used FZ2500 (first choice) or used FZ1000 (cant go wrong). Then when, not if, Panasonic unveils the successor to the FZ1000 (full frame sensor? Longer zoom? 8K? I mean what’s left?) you can keep it or sell it with no buyer remorse.

NorthOlbo Thank you for the prompt reply, Sir! I just placed an order for the FZ1000 as my first “serious” camera as a beginner. Any tips on “weather proofing” the FZ1000 for photos taken in inclement conditions? Thank you again for your reviews. Much appreciated. Wish me luck!

Army4Runner Good choice! I dont have any special tips besides the obvious keeping it under your jacket. I’ve taken lots of pictures in misty/foggy weather and got lucky so far. KZbin is amazing in that someone has done a video on everything, so I would think there are some good weatherproofing tips for cameras out there. Now THAT would be a good feature in the FZ3000 whenever that shows up, a weatherprooof camera!. Good luck with your new photography.

@@NorthOlbo : Hello ! Yes , I have also placed an order for the FZ1000 about 2 weeks ago , and find this video with the comments very helpful ! Okay I am a beginner digital camera user with the same predicament as Army4Runner , that is that lack of weather sealing like you have on the FZ300 . I worry more about the dust and salt spray affecting the camera + lens use , as I plan on filming outside in the winter in park-like settings ! Even when I enter more deeply into the park or woods , away from the streets/parking lots there will still be overspray dust/salt particles floating around …… When they are kicked up by the wind ! NorthOlbo would you then recommend the use of a lens filter [ high quality only ] to protect the lens in this situation , how about when the zoom is extended to maximum can salt spray still enter inside the camera ??? Where I live the weather is constantly changing with the mornings sunny and dry , yet by noon hour the sky is overcast with rain or snow a great possibility of affecting filming …… So anything short of using a tripod with an umbrella held above the camera , to protect it as I hurry to wrap up filming , by actual rain drops hitting the camera if the wind kicks in ??? Do you think I / we are overstating this issue as serious first timers with an expensive camera ??? Thanks Scarboro /Tom *New Subscriber* [ My order on the FZ1000 just arrived at camera store last night ! ]

A fantastic review! I totally love those comparisons you took the effort to make! Thanks a lot! Although... I have to make one comment with regards to comparing pocket to bridge cameras. I have now been using Sony HX90 and HX90V for 2+ years. I had purchased it because I was tired of carrying and changing lenses in my previous DSLR, missed opportunities, and the dilemmas whether to take the camera with me or not. Now I am tired of the miniature dimensions, eyestrain when reading menus, etc. Right now I am about to buy an FZ1000 Mark2, but will still keep and carry my Sony as a backup camera, stowed away in my pocket. There is nothing worse than a trip ruined by a defective camera! (I will also be able to attach filters to FZ1000 II if I wish to.) As we al know - there is no single camera that can satisfy all of your needs, some of them - as you have mentioned - include sporadic shooting of moon or insects.

Well, that was a useful comparison. Who would have thought it would still be useful today... The FZ1000 has been followed up by the mkII already 5 years ago but still has the same sensor and lens. Did decide to get that one for an upcoming safari trip. I was a little bit worried about the 400 mm being a bit too short compared to a 600+mm eq., but seeing how much you can still crop my worries are gone. On a previous trip I used an 8MP Olympus DSLR from 2005 with 70-300mm lens and got some good results. Between the brighter lens, extra resolution and newer sensor, I'm pretty sure it will work out very well A Sony RX10 III or IV might give better results at the long end, but it's also a lot more expensive.
@NorthOlbo10 ай бұрын
Nice to know people still find these ancient videos useful! Unless you are really tight on space, on a trip like a safari I would totally go with the larger sensor camera. You will be at full zoom and still cropping in, or in evening with low light, both need that big sensor. Thanks for the comment

Great test buddy! I love your location and motive choices. Well done! But the camera decision depends on the individual financial situation of the new owner: Lumix FZ82 ~ 350 $ | Lumix FZ1000 ~ 600 $

You are right, and there is an active resale market out there for both cameras. Check your local Craigslist, or even Bay to see what's available. The "new FZ1000" which carries into it a few features from the FZ2500 but is more or less the same as the old FZ1000 should knock the price down for the very capable older FZ1000. This was a really well done comparison. Would be interesting to see a comparison of the zs80 and zs100/zs200 as well, but this comparison can already be used to learn the major differences between those models. However the ZS80's 720mm equiv. may not have any advantage compared to cropping on the ZS200's 360mm (even for moon shots), as the focal length difference is less.

@NorthOlbo5 жыл бұрын
I agree about that so-called “manual” focus on the FZ1000. I cant recall in the instruction manual that a “slow” focus turn did nothing, you had to quickly turn the focus ring to cause a change. What’s with that? Improved that on the FZ2500. Panasonic added mostly software features and a few goodies (LCD touch back) from the FZ2500 to have the best of everything in the new improved FZ1000. Its a capable unit for sure.

I've gone from FZ200 -> FZ300 -> FZ1000. They are all great cameras, but essentially FZ1000 1inch sensor does make quite a difference, especially in lower light conditions. FZ200/300/80 are great for outdoors, travel, and wildlife. Form factor of the FZ1000 is also excellent. The extra weight gives it a bit more stability. My companion camera is the LX100, which is more compact, even better in low-light thanks to the m4/3 sensor, smaller photo size but more dynamic range. The FZ1000 is the middle ground of all cameras. It doesn't excel in any single area, instead is good in aspects and wins for its overall versatility.

I'm waiting for a real upgrade from the FZ1000, like you I've tried most of the others. the FZ2500 isn't enough of a change to get me to switch yet. If I could get a zoom to 800mm I'd go. Although I like the FZ1000 it's manual focus is weird, and it has glitched out on me a couple of times when it wouldn't focus, at all. Other than that, a touch screen and I'm good.

I have the FZ300. It's weather sealed and has "all the features". The f2.8 lens from 25-600mm is awesome too... but... the small 1/2.3 sensor makes it a "snapshot and video" camera for me. My Nikon DSLR with an APS-C sensor does the rest. I would think the FZ1000 would be the best of the "bridge camera" bunch (except for the weather sealing - my reason for buying the FZ300). Sensors are the biggest deal when buying a camera. Larger sensors provide for more creativity (yep... bottom line).

I didnt do a FZ300 comparison, but If you have a few minutes have a watch of another comparisonI did of the Lumix ZS200 (aka TS200) vs the FZ1000 and the LX100. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ3Ug2ewmdWXf6c I look at them from the point of travel cameras, not just a big zoom on a nice camera. Spoiler: the ZS200 wins, as it has the full 1" sensor of the FZ1000, only a slightly smaller zoom, and is WAY smaller for travel. I use it all the time travelling, and if you have seen my channel travel videos of Spain, Sweden, Norway, Haida Gwaii, Hungary etc, they were all done with the ZS200. I have since moved on from the FZ1000 to the FZ2500, but still not for travel. Almost identical but a tiny bit longer zoom, and a touch sensitive back screen which is super handy. Even so, when I travel with carry-on only (which is always...) I save the space of the big FZ2500 and sneak the ZS200 in my pocket. Both cameras have been around for awhile and there are great second hand prices available. I just came from a trip kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn_Wp5Zphtioi9k with lots of wildlife photography from a boat in wavy seas and needed the Image Stabilization big time. I also took the best video scenes and ran them again through Final Cut Pro's motion stabilizer. A little glitchy here and there but made usable otherwise useless rocking scenes with bouncing sea lions, otters, and whales. Obviously the high stuff is from a drone, and the underwater is from a GoPro! Have a great trip and thanks for the comments.

Too funny...how many moon shots? Apparently this still sells a lot of super zoom cameras. A big sensor is a better idea with more light gathering, depth of field and ability to crop down into an image. The old FZ1000 is ancient now, the replacement FZ2500 a far superior camera. I havent stayed on top of a replacement for the FZ2500, but you can get them second hand for cheap and they are a great camera. keep the 80 for the moon shots, FZ1000 may be time for Craigslist. The test on full tele was on 200 iso, the smaller sensor will perform way better at 100, also the light is not the same, fz1000 has a full stop ahead 1/2500 vs 1/1000, also the fz80 image is shaken 1/2500 would have been better for fz80, the noise reduction is not the same for both of them either. However, even so I don't think at full tele the fz80 is worse in good light, is probably a bit sharper but not by much.

Currently got an fz330(that's what its called here) I want a small camera like an hx99 or even an A6000 with a small to medium size lens. But I also need reach. Today I didn't really shoot past 600mm. But in poor light 600 can look bad on the fz. Most pics were probably under 100mm. So an A6000 would have been fine today. I just feel the small sensor isn't enough at times. Been looking at the Panasonic and sony 1 inch camers with 600mm zoom. But I think maybe the fz1000 might not have quite enough reach. I know the alpha doesn't either but it satisfies the smaller camera need. I think I'll just have to buy one of each 😬

Great comparison! I can't decide whether to go with DSLR, MILC or bridge. I own an Olympus IS1000 non interchangeable lens SLR film camera which is fuctions like a bridge camera without the EVF. I want to go to digital. I'm not satisfied with my smartphone's images. So the thing is I viewed reviews of the FZ1000 and another cameras with kit lenses from this price range. There is a comparison tool on the dpreview site and the quality of the DSLR is looking better BUT they had made these tests with fixed focal length lenses which are far superior than kit lenses. So with the kit lens the quality will suffer. And if you want to go with the same focal length as the FZ1000, maybe a better quality and light performance, you will need to pay a hefty premium. I mean the bridge cameras are pretty overlooked. They provide huge focal lenght, a lot of built in features and you don't have to fiddle carrying the extra lenses and chaning them. Also I've just realized price/performance ratio is not linear on the camera market. As you go up with price the less features added, so besides the small sensor size the FZ80 is an absolute bargain.

You will love the world of digital photography and really, there are no “bad” cameras out there,. They all have fairly awesome optics, allow control over settings, have built in filters, raw vs jpeg etc. Just two general comments though. Get the smallest one with all the features you need as you dont want to be the tourist with the giant camera around the neck with the huge lens capturing boring shots. The best camera is the one you have ready for that shot. Convenience is #1. Thats why cellphones are so great. No zoom, but its ready and can send a picture too, so pretty cool. Second thing, try to get the biggest sensor size within your budget/form factor of the camera. The FZ80 only limit is the smaller sensor, but in a way that allows it jame all those features into a smaller form factor (see point #1 !). A bigger sensor lets the camera to work better in low light, create softer defocussed backgrounds (bokeh) and generally have a higher pixel count which allows cropping and blowing up of an image, often better than a cheap zoom lens on a tiny sensor would have. I always travel with carryon only, so size is important and my travel camera is a Lumix ZS200, palm sized bridge camera with an adequate 24-360mm zoom, but 1” sensor and great 4K video with touch screen back. When not travelling I prefer the FZ1000, before I had the ZS200 the FZ80 was better for travelling. So many choices. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

I noticed you missed some things: The FZ80 can record at 60fps while the FZ1000 can record only at 50fps. It's not a really big of a deal, but it's still something to mention. On the FZ1000 you have the option to shoot at 1/4000 of a second (Mechanical Shutter), and on the FZ80 you can only shoot at 1/2000 of a second, but both can take a picture up to 1/16,000 of a second using the Electronic Shutter. Also, you can shoot a picture with an exposure time of 120 seconds on the FZ1000 and only 60 seconds on the FZ80. It also seems that the FZ1000 can film only at 24/25/50 fps and the FZ80 can film at 25/30/60... I don't really understand why the option for 30fps isn't available on the FZ1000... did you see any major frame differences between the two when comparing them side by side? I usually render videos at 30fps or 60, so if I buy this camera I will have to make some adjustments... All the information that I wrote is from the Panasonic website so I hope I'm not correct but if I am please correct me.

Wow! Some kind of detail!. You are right about all of that, but because my vids are pretty lengthy already I do leave a lot out. I try to hit the major issues that influence our purchases, like quality of image, low light capability, controls, design/handling, main features. Mechanical versus electronic shutter is a whole video to itself, there are times you want to be selective (electronic is silent for instance), and video at different FPS like 25 vs 30 is very subjective and probably better described in other youtube videos. Good points, and reinforces the need to look at all the camera reviews on youtube (not just the quickie “pro” reviews which I find are just like camera store pitches and not orientated towards the hobby enthusiast with the compromises we have to choose). Thanks for the constructive comment!

And, of course, I have a suspicion, if the price at the lower price of the camera is New, as the respective website claims. Thanks a lot

I cant help you with that,but I recommend you pass on the FZ1000 and get a FZ2500. Great review. I’m trying to decide on a camera that will he used mostly for wildlife from a deer stand. I’m considering the FZ80, 300 or 1000. Silent Mode is a must. Any thoughts?
@cavman5435 жыл бұрын
Steve Graves Hi. I bought the fz300 to replace my old fz150 but I found the picture quality was worse when comparing to the fz150. The images have slightly more noise at equivalent iso and they look softer at long focal lengths. I wouldn't recommend the fz300 for taking stills of birds. The images are too mushy when you crop in. The 4k video is good considering the size of the sensor. I mainly shoot stills and the fz1000 looks very impressive (and they can be picked up for £350 from used camera stores). I'm seriously tempted to get one. My only reservation is the inbuilt mics pick up the sound of the lens stabiliser in quiet video scenes. It sounds like a grinding noise but this could be fixed by using an external mic.. Hope this helps.
@NorthOlbo5 жыл бұрын
In that deer stand you probably will be putting the camera up to your eye and down again, using the viewfinder. Its unfortunate the FZ80 requires a button push to change the image from viewfinder to back screen. The FZ1000 does this automatically when the eye is brought up to the viewfinder (via a setting in the menu). This small change may be the operational nudge that would make me favour the FZ1000 convenience. Also, you likely will see most wildlife in early morning and later evening, ie low light conditions. The bigger 1" sensor on the FZ1000 will give you more light gathering which will help shutter speeds of course, but also image stabilization and focus, which needs light and contrast. Hope that helps.

Thank you for a really good and concise video, I’m trying to decide to buy the FZ80 or FZ1000, love the price of the FZ80 and zoom lense, but worried about the difficult light scenarios. I think on balance I’m going for the FZ1000 because although i dont want to pay the extra , I dont want to buy a camera that isn’t as fully versatile in terms of iso. I think though they are both great cameras

Thanks for your comments. I would skip over the FZ1000 and go to its follow up, the FZ2500. Although mostly the same camera it has some really useful practical features (swappable batteries and SD without removing a tripod mount), built in ND filters etc. And they have been out for a few years now so some really good prices on second hand cameras. I think its the best bridge camera value today.

Excellent camera review on the comparison between the FZ80 & FZ1000 with side by side photo comparisons , surprise it is actually showing the Panasonic specs are not B.S when it comes to the FZ80 !!! Now if only after watching a dozen different reviewers on the FZ 80/300/1000/2500 can actually show you how , and when it is really necessary to properly clean these cameras and their lenses ??? Why this part of the review is always skipped is something that boggles the mind , considering how expensive this equipment actually is with the multi coated lenses ……. YES ! They can very easily be damaged the first time you attempt to clean them due to dust , cat/dog hair , or water droplets ??? Thanks Scarboro/Tom
@NorthOlbo5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I think Panasonic has been slow on weatherproofing its many camera lines, I have a TS200 as well, not a cheap camera, which is built for travel. Its begging for a decent rainproof design. Unlike the pro’s, I always keep a high quality multi coated UV filter on the lens which gets cleaned for dust/droplets. I figure if it gets damaged its a cheap replacement, unlike a lens. As these are all fixed mount cameras there is no sensor access or mirrors etc to maintain, so thats good. Getting a protective plastic screen cover for the display is good, especially on the touch screens (much like a cellphone screen shield). I attach a small bag to my camera strap which holds a spare battery, extra SD card and lens wipe so I can immediately clean any mist or moisture marks off the camera. Its so easy to get a dust, droplet, or dog hair (good suggestion!) in the picture and not notice until blown up on the home computer and this annoying blur in the image, very hard to fix afterwards. My videos go on so long already I’m reluctant to throw the kitchen sink in of everything I can think of...but good points you made there. Thanks!

$600 seems like a lot for a camera thats been around for awhile. Try Craigslist or even camera stores that have trade-ins for sale. The moon is great for pics because its so bright , you'll need a tripod because of the long zoom lens.. But the other planets may be too dim for the smaller sensor (less light gathering), and the slow shutter speeds will make blurring a problem. thanks for the comment.

@NorthOlbo4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your note. I dont have a current comparison with the Sony RX10 III. I have had these cameras in the past and really liked their features but they had a terrible menu structure that was unintuitive and awkward to access. Unfortunately the menu controlled many of the features. I replaced my FZ1000 with the FZ2500 and admit I love it. The touch sensitive screen is useful, the ND filter is handy, but what is great is the SD card is removable and battery removable without taking off the tripod plate. So logical. There are a few other button changes but not a huge difference from the FZ1000.
@jan-martinulvag19624 жыл бұрын
@@NorthOlbo I like it that you zoom as far as you can on camera and pictures The structure of the pixels are interesting. And the noise. I find that the sony rx100II is much better than the lumix Lx 100. The structure of the pixles/noise on the LX100 is really ugly
@jan-martinulvag19624 жыл бұрын
@@NorthOlbo Yes I know the sony menus are really bad. But the image quality of the RX10 is great?
Jan-Martin Ulvåg For its size its great. Hard to compare it against such a big lens on the FZ1000/2500, not really fair. But if portability is most important then the RX10 line has great optics. Personally, I think optics can be over-rated or misleading. A camera has to be handy, nearby and ready when you are. Optics is a close second. Thats why cellphone cameras have killed the point and shoot market, they meet all that with just less zoom lens and smaller sensors. But convenience is first! Thats why I get so frustrated by Sony’s inconvenient menu on such a great camera. They left the engineers in charge to design the menu instead of a photographer. And I’m an engineer!

Unless the ultra compacts have at least a 1 inch sensor (like SONY's RX line) they really can't cut the mustard... The First Ultra Compact to have 24-400 zoom 4K with a 1 inch sensor or APS-C (AND A MIC LINE IN) is going to destroy the market.
@NorthOlbo5 жыл бұрын
That is so true...any modern camera HAS to have a 1” sensor (like the Lumix ZS/TS 200 line of pocket zoom cameras) 4K, decent zoom (the TS200 goes to 360mm, not bad). The mike in is a rarity in these pocket cameras. It makes me crazy that Nikon promotes its P1000 SUPER zoom 3000mm !! Zoom, but it has a crap tiny sensor. The tiny sensor “amplifies” the effective focal range of the zoom which its fans rave over but sucks at image quality, low light, so many things. Bigger sensor, better images, period. You can blow them up later on your computer and carry a tiny camera in your pocket. And it will be cheaper too. Thanks for the reply.

I got a super deal on a used FZ2500, which I think is very close to the “second generation” FZ1000. Touch screen, slightly longer zoom, built in ND filter. Nice things but not enough perhaps to dump your FZ1000 over. I think the FZ1000 and its evolution is one of the better product lines Panasonic has produced. I use it a LOT for producing another KZbin channel. I’ve only had one glitch with it, where it locked up saving a video file to the SD card. Very weird, never happened before or after. Fortunately I could reshoot the video but lowered its reliability.

What is the best camera fz300 or fz80?
@matthewlong37165 жыл бұрын
I have owned both and settled on the FZ300 ..the only thing better about the FZ80 is the zoom ..everything else equal or better on the FZ300. The great constant f/2.8 lens of the 300 cannot be understated. The FZ300s 12MP sensor helps with noise control too ..the FZ80 is only decent at lower ISOs ..the 18MP sensor falls apart above that and the lens gets dark quick.
