In this video I'm going to compare the Lumix G9 and Lumix S1R High Resolution modes. It the G9 any good compared to the massive S1R?
My name is Matti Sulanto, I'm a photographer and a Lumix ambassador based in Helsinki Finland. I'll publish a new video every Tuesday and Friday.

An interesting comparison test. I was thinking as I watched, that in the G9 v S1r equation should be size, weight and cost? Then the G9 comes out remarkably well, was it's maybe only a third of the size, weight, and cost of the S1r, yet can deliver images that are very close to it's much bigger brother. The S1/1r are great cameras, just that the G9 is remarkable for it's size and cost, for most users.

I have a Lumix G80 and lumix G9 and I'm absolutely in love with this cameras. Specially with the G9. We use native lens Lumix (12-35 & 50-100 2,8) and also Viltrox M2 with Sigma Lens. For sure I'd love to have the S1.. But I think right now the problem is the native lens are so so expensive!! At least Prohibitive for me. Yay to 4K! Biggest general downside to Panasonic high-res modes is the inability to use it with flash or studio lighting. This is very disappointing since it would otherwise be ideal for product photography and macro photography. Olympus E5 and E1 models *do* permit use of flash, and even have a mode that lets you set the timing of the multiple shots in the high-res mode to give time for strobes/flashes to recharge for the next shot.

Very interesting comparison. I am probably leaning towards a Real World comparison to make decisions around the image / cost sacrifice I would need to make. It would be really interesting to compare Regular output JPEGs and Raw files from each camera. That way I could decide what way to go......spend more on a full frame or accept the image / weight / cost trade off. I think there would be many enthusiasts like me that don’t have the time, storage or computing power to do upscaling of high resolution files. Also I rarely use this feature and try wherever possible to get the best out of my camera & lens combo. Keep up the good work! Regards Tony from Melbourne Australia.

Well, I'm an Olympus shooter with an Pen F, which also has this hires mode. And I used it for some occasions (outdoors and still life): Results are very impressive (as long as movement doesn't ruin it), but I also found that I just don't need it and that I'm content with 20 MP throughout the board. 80 MP hires does have a use for me, though: I use it for "scanning" film negatives, and there I want to get as much detail out of the film grain as I can (it improves the end result, even if I downsample later). Works like a charm.

Right in time! I was just thinking of this especially S1R. My Em1.2 does well with noctilucent clouds in Hires mode. S1R has much more MPixels from a bigger sensor and mode 2 which corrects for movement. One downside I found: just 1 second exposure. I feel Pansonic should make mode 2 available on the G9 too...Now I am going to watch your review. So my experience with the EM1.2 is that HiRes mode for landscape is very very usable. Even with a lot of wind as long as your main subject does not move. I shot noctilucent clouds last week (that was quite the display) in Hires with an extremely good lens (Sigma 56 mm f1.4) and the IQ is just stunning. COmpared to the single shot with such low light. Although in The Netherlands it won't get dark and we have no official night in the may june and part of july it is a good test voor noise. The Hires file is easily three stops better. What makes the Oly iteration stan out over the G9 is that it allows for 60 second exposures. So that is 480 s for the whole shot. In this way if you want long exposure all advantages of the larger sensored cams are gone. Because with these exposure anything moving will show up in both files.Next week I will do a side by side with my D800e on one tripod and the Em1.2 on the other. I expect these clouds, since they do move slowly are a good way to test these cams…The S1R, like I said, interests me because extensive reviews have shown that its mode 2 has no real issues with movement...

So there is a part 2 coming? Look at mirrorlesscomparisons and you'll see how well it works. mirrorlesscomparison.com/stories/panasonic-g9-vs-s1r-scotland/Keith cooper has a nice review also on Hires mode1 and 2. www.northlight-images.co.uk/using-the-panasonic-s1r/But I'll await your one. My tip would be to shoot noctilucent clouds (you have them for sure too in Helsinki) but you cannot plan on them. Otherwise something else where more is tested than just detail. Noise is another thing that is strongly affected. So why not shoot ISO3200 on both in a situation where you need something like that. I bet the HiRes shot will look like a 200-400ISO single shot. But who knows.Do you agree if mode 2 is as good as it seems to be, this should really be given to G9 too in an FW update?

I have to say that your 4K video looked fantastic. So much so that I tried to wipe marks off my screen only to realise they were on your wall. I don't know which lens you were using but the initial part of the video looked a little distorted. Viewing on a UHD monitor I could see little or no difference in detail between the two cameras. The russet-brown colour of the tree behind the car looked better from the G9 and the sky more a pleasing blue from the S1R, although its clouds had a blue tint and the G9 was probably more the authentic slightly brown haze.

I am watching this on my Apple 5K monitor, so I am wondering if I will see as much a difference on my monitor for the 100MP photos as when the photos are enlarged and printed. I need help understanding one thing in the comparison. What is "up sampling". I have a G9 and I am still learning how to use it. Have not tried out the hi-res mode yet. I learned when birding most of the difference between a very clear resolution shot or not is the distance I am from the bird combined with the light I have provided for me by Mother Nature (along with getting my settings right). Early evening light works best. Do you think close range photos would make a difference in the comparison?

Dynamic range and noise would be an interesting aspect to investigate, and may be of more practical relevance for many applications. In a low light scenario, and a fixed depth of field, the g9 will be operating at two stops lower iso than the s1r. How much difference does this make? In the high-res multi-exposure mode the noise and dynamic range of both cameras should improve. But by how much in practice? Perhaps some city night-scapes might be a good test?

I cannot comment on the G85, but the G9 is much better than the G7 when dealing with shadows. I would assume it is somewhat better at it than what you currently have? I have found my custom buttons to be the real bonus, you can choice a button to turn off and on peaking, mechanical to electronic (silent) shutter, bracketing (exposure, focus or similar). It speeds up the process and makes it flow better. When I first got it I was overwhelmed by the button system, but now I get disappointed with cameras offering less. I do still use my older G7 (as it is a back-up camera and I need to stay familiar with it), but it is never such a fluid process as with the G9 (even if the results are still acceptable). Sorry I couldn't answer the query directly, maybe someone who uses you camera and the G9 can answer it directly?

I'm happy with the G9's normal 20 MP resolution so have not used its high res mode. I am a little leery about the high res mode since any movement in the scene potentially can ruin the shot. Not sure why the average joe needs more than 20-24 MPs. Sure, comparing shots to higher res cameras will show less detail and dynamic range but who does that besides camera reviewers? I certainly see a case for professionals needing higher res cameras, especially when cropping. So the S1R would be great for that end. Great comparison!

Zero need to be leery since the single shot is captured too! So it is without risk although on the G9 I think you need to "tell" the cam you want the single shot raw too. I am an average Joe using the EM1.2 with a very similar HiRes mode. While twice the resolution is nice it is not the biggest gain. It is better colour, better Dyanmic range and the easiest thing to spot (often considered mFT achilles heal) is the noise. It gets three stops better. But thecombination is better than my D800e. Sure it is restricted due to movement (unlike S1R) but if there isn't too much in it the resulting file is visibly better than the single shot Really quite a difference. I use very sharp lenses for it like the 56 mm f1.4 Sigma, the 20 mm f1.7. But also the f2.8 zooms by Panny get you more detail. Not as much as the primes but still it is better. For some Reason the G9 has better output in Hires (in RAW) than the Em1.2 does.

How come Santos and everyone commented missed the moire artifact of the S1r on the second comparison? It is obvious that false color shown on upscaled photo of the building taken on the S1r but the hi-res G9 is free from the moire false color. Hi-Rez mode is more than hi-res. Each pixel has complete sample of red, green and blue sub pixels. It beats all the Bayer interpolation sensors as free of moire artifact. And the comparison showed the difference but no one noticed! 😞

@@ookiemand No, it was not a CA problem. There were 2 ways CA differs from moire. First, for CA, it would have shown green or purple halo on every tile. However, it was blue on some rows and red on others. It is exactly a moire problem. Secondly, for CA, false colors would have been shown on the hi-res shot of the S1r as well since the CA is characteristic of the lens, not the sensor. However, the false vanish on the hi-res mode of S1r. So, the false color has nothing to do with CA.

I have G9 with Pana Leica 15mm 1.7, and the Lumix 12-60. I also have the Sony a7r2 with the 24-105 f4. For my use the Sony seems to print out better with my Canon Pixma Pro 100 printer. Could be me because I use zero cost software and refrain from using RAW files. I shoot the G9 to produce a regular jpg as well as the high res jpg. Often the intermediate 40mp jpg file looks better than the 80mp file in my useage. Many times the 80mp file has strange colors when compared to the std 20mp jpg.

I have use high resolution on both. I have not compared image quality, I don't see its relevance. I also use 50 megapixels high resolution on my OM-D E-M1x. I use high resolution to provide flexibility in post production. I can, and do, frame a scene and shoot it in high resolution. If 20 megapixels is enough, and there's enough fully professional 20 megapixels cameras around 20 megapixels to say it is, I have enormous flexibility in choosing parts of the full capture as separate photos in their own right.

When you are comparing resolution and detail why not crop in at 300 percent? 100 percent is not enough.

Photography is not pixel peeping. Digital cameras have provided professional results since they had 6mp. It's amateurs who demand ever more pixels, resulting in bigger cameras and lens size. The S1/H is a great camera but with a lens it's reaching studio proportions. I own a full frame Canon but take the Panasonic M43 9 times out of 10.
@rogerbrown7659

Because you are comparing resolution between 2 cameras. It is difficult to see the difference since you will not crop in tight. That was the purpose of this video wasn’t it? If you want to call it pixel peeping so be it.

@@rogerbrown7659 It depends what the camera is being used for. Surveillance, medical and astronomy may require forensic levels of detail. For commercial and amateur use it's about how well a camera performs for its chosen application, print, on-line, etc.

6:57 Why? The only results that matter are those you would publish, and the only medium at all demanding is print. For pictures on a 4K screen, the GH5s is up to the task.
