With your last G9ii video, you saved me 1'500 box :) And I'm so glad for that! I do KZbin myself still with the GH5 and I was saying in my videos when the G9ii was released, that that camera will not make you a better filmmaker. But seeing the price going down of the G9ii I restarted to watch content about it on KZbin, and so I've found your channel :D. I keep shooting with the GH5 and will see what the near future has to offer. Thank you so so much for your video and the researches you've done! AND THANKS for being REAL! 🙌🔥

So, waiting is almost over? Or do you still miss something crucial in the GH7? Or do the new functions not make a big difference to your workflows?

I just tested my G9 II recording 4k60 with the thermal management setting set to "high", indoors (no direct sunlight) and it still shut off due to thermals in 45 minutes. So I don't know how other people are testing, but it definitely cannot record indefinitely, and I'll be returning mine. It's essentially a photo camera that can do short video recordings.

Thank you for making this follow up video. I was thinking about mentioning the MacBook heat thing on the last video since you made some computer comparisons, but then kinda forgot about it. A few other thoughts: I think the G9 person in the comments talking about the 'FF-size' G9mk2 is odd, to me, since the G9 and the mark 2 are almost identical in size. 'It's too big!!!' was a critism of the original G9 when it launched, and also one of the things I like about the body. I want smaller, lighter lenses, I don't want a body I can't fit my whole hand on. I think one of the reasons I'm a bit defensive about the fan thing is that I feel like a lot of cameras are geared toward hybrid or video use, and some people still shoot 99% stills. I don't want or need a GH6 with PDAF, I want and need a G9mk2, and I don't want it to have a fan. I could always just jump ship back to Olympus/OM System, but their bodies are smaller(see above) and I like most of the Pana/Lumix/Leica lenses better, ESPECIALLY at the long end. The two resonably affordable super-tele lenses from OM System are both rebranded Sigma FF lenses, and WAY bigger than they needed to be. Anyway, keep up the good work, we'll keep watching.

The direct sunlight thing is really interesting, and makes sense. I used to have a dash-mounted phone holder/charger, and my phone would get WAY too hot on sunny days, even if it wasn't that hot out, so I stopped using it. As for lowering the value of your G9ii, if I had some extra cash on hand, I'd gladly take it off your hands :) Also, I love Shane, he's got a guitar channel, too, which I watch a lot.

I had my g9ii overheat today whilst it was 30/31 degrees Celsius outside and maybe 27/28 inside (we don't have AC as standard in the UK). What's worse is that it wasn't even recording, it was just running HDMI out to my PC. It was set to 5.7k 30p (not open gate) but shut off after about an hour and a half whereas I've had my gh5 run in similar conditions for 12+ hours, granted that's only at 4k. I've lowered the resolution now and we'll see how it does

The geeky nerdy youtube guy from australia had his sony a74 overheating 3 times in 15 minutes and the sony does not even have open gate or 6 k so put this in perspective. If i remember right he never had the g9 overheating as well.. i am looking forward to own a g9 and i am very curious how it will do. I still belive its not an issiue for most users.

Yes I also have a Sony a7iv and that thing will even overheat indoors in standby mode if there isn't enough airflow in the room.

@_tographer The channel @LumixUSA has a 1h+ live show every Thursday (I think 1pm for you). It's hosted by Sean Robinson. Some of the shows are recorded (for example when NAB is going on). Usually there are 50-100 people watching and you can ask questions. When the G9-II came out, they run the official announcement on the channel. After about 27min they explained the video features and heat management. Of course there is company bias but if you take this into account, they are pretty honest. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6Wndq2Jg6d7isU One week later there where two questions about GH6 vs G9-II and overheating: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYGlcmSenq9oY9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYGlcmSenq9oY9E You always get the answer you need if you ask about reasons to buy a GH6 over the G9-II. They always have the same points: Fan (overheating), Screen, internal high end recording, film making features like tally lights, sound screen button, time code. Since I like to do several week long bicycle trips in the summer and areas like Italy and southern France can also get up to 40°C, I was a little bit concerned and watched the tests but decided that I don't run the camera that long and as a hybrid shooter I won't have problems. In July, I will find out. My expectation is that I will overheat faster than the G9-II.

I also love my 10-25.... For the most part 😅 After the last video and this, I've even more so dug my feet in to keep the g9 and wait for something else. I may not upgrade if some of these Lidar AF systems keep getting better. I'd rather upgrade glass.

This is why I think the GH6 has very beefy fan support internally. Why didn't they put that tech in the G9ii? I guess they might do another firmware update for the G9ii to help with this?
@kenslyder6 ай бұрын
I don't think that a software update will help. The Problem is the hardware in my opinion. But that is just my personal opinion.

I would be curious to see a heat test done at more normal codecs. I want the G9ii mostly for wildlife photography but it can double as a wedding camera as well, thats where I'd likely be filming 4k 25fps in the longGOP codec and it may be in direct Australian sun. I'd love to see how it performance in that instance. The 6k open-gate is probably one of the more intensive codecs for the camera to process and I'm willing to bet most people would be simply shooting in 4k 16:9 or 17:9 potentially even in the longGOP compression. The reason I am saying this is because that would match much closer to the GH5 and we can really get an idea of it's apples to apples heat performance. The G9ii is more prone to overheat than the GH5 both without a fan because it is doing much more than the GH5 is. Not just in larger files sizes, resolutions but as its a 25mp sensor it has to work harder to downsample as well. As the G9ii is a photo focused camera and Lumix didn't put in a fan because thats what Photographers asked for it shouldn't be surprising that its at risk of overheating, that being said, a use case I can see myself using it for is as a c cam for weddings, to film a ceremony you need multiple cameras. EDIT - Side note: The flimsy piece of paper you held up is not the user manual that is a quick start guide or something along those lines and I am willing to bet there is a QR code somewhere on that sheet that takes you to the user manual. It's pretty common these days that the manual isn't included in paper with a product but rather a web address to it. Not great but also not just Panasonic doing this, its just standard practice. The User Manual is here help.na.panasonic.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/DCG9M2_DVQP3010ZA_ENG.pdf

Think of all the cameras before the G9II that didn't have a fan. Now according to you standing in the sun open gate is number one and maybe it is for you. I hope there can be a firewire to help out.
@kenslyder6 ай бұрын
yeah I think he's right. More data processing faster overheating and the hardware of the G9ii can't catch up in warm-hot weather conditions for higher data processing like shooting in 4K 120p or open gate recording. Remember: The camera was build for photography in the first place, and just wait, there will be more people complaining about this issue during the summer time.
@razfilmstv6 ай бұрын
@@kenslyder I guess it depends on how you shoot video. How many people stand out in the sun shooting 4k 120 or open gate for 20, 30 or 60 minutes non stop? Did the GH5 have a fan?
@kenslyder6 ай бұрын
@@razfilmstv No the GH5 doesn't have a fan. But it can't shoot in 4k 120p either. Just wait.. The summer is not quite here yet.

@@kenslyder So if you don't plan on shooting 4k 120 for long periods of time then no problem or 5.7 open gate of long periods of time then no problem.
