This is the first video of yours that I have watched, and I am blown away by the production value. Not just the visuals but also the content, like a great script, good narration, intuitive editing, nice graphics and typo. But most of all, the value of the information you provide on the topic. I am renting an S5 next week so I wanted to get an introduction and review beforehand, preferrably from a professional with hands-on experience. And voila! Here you are. And I couldn't have been more pleased. Your video answered all the questions I had as well as many I didn't know I had. Here's a sub with bells on from Oslo!

I just shot a feature on the S5. I shot into the Ninja 5 so I was getting 5.9k, RAW, 422 12 bit. The image is poetry. The files are massive but, if your making a feature film you pay that price. I was massive on GH5's and GH4's before moving to the S5. I loved those cameras but the image just does not compare. Highlight role off, chromatic aberration, dynamic rage, low light, etc are obviously better, as is seeing how wide a 16mm lens actually is on a full frame camera, But it is the image, it just sings. I got an open box deal for 1,400 bucks and I am blown away by this little monster.

The first camera I ever bought was the GH4. Only sold it a year or so ago, loved that thing!
@charliemcgrain

@@EdProsser I had the Canon T3 Rebel, the image was beautiful but always a little soft compared the the GH4 which I loved, even though I had to get a speedbooster and was still limited in terms of low light chromatic, etc. You could still shoot a great movie on the Gh4 today. But, man, this S5! The S1H has a few more tricks up its sleeve but shooting into the Ninja ( extra 600 bucks with a media card and batteries ) I don't think I need and S1H, it's the same sensor. If you are going to shoot action then you have to be careful with fast pans/rolling shutter, but as mentioned, when I started seeing the image from full frame at 5.9k out of this open box 1,400 buck camera I was actually shocked. It's wonderful. The Gh4 had it's day, if you have a great script then why not, but the S5 is all anyone needs to cover just about everything any filmmaker needs to stand right along side the big boys. I shoot commercials from time to time on Arris and I swear I can't tell the difference in post between them, except for the price tag. Absolutely the best bang for the buck out there today. Keep in mid I am not an action photographer, I am a filmmaker and I want some poetry out of the image.

@@bbasleigh6149 hard to know really. Second hand for sure. I picked one up on the Amazon Black Friday sale. £1200 including the 50mm f1.8. Loving it so far. Thanks for your great review which I can completely support from the perspective of an S1H-Owner (many features now available in the S5, too). Just one point to be added: the S-series of Panasonic is awesome when using anamorphic lens, providing anamorphic stabilization mode, EVF and Screen desqueeze, open gate (3:2) shooting, and a great color science (as you mentioned for the HD settings) that greatly supports the anamorphic de-squeezing.

The Sony cameras don't have 'better low light'. They just have stronger in camera noise reduction. Its good if that's what you need. But frankly, I think most Sony users over expose in low light situations because the camera can. Why turn darks into greys? Why decrease the dynamic range for that? Most cameras, even a GH5 with a good fast lens is good in 'low light'. FF make it easier, but were close enough now that it does not matter.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser 2 жыл бұрын
Well yeah, the noise reduction gives you a cleaner image and allows you to push higher ISOs - and saves a time consuming / prossesor intensive step in post. For what it's worth I still think a lot of it is Sony marketing BS convincing people that's what they need.

I got my S5 for $1,200 with a smallrig cage and the 20-60 kit lens (honestly though this lens is pretty mediocre, going to sell it for something else), the value was incredible. I also never understood why people complain when a camera/lens is too sharp. This can easily be mitigated with filters on your lenses or vintage lenses or in post. It's always better to have a sharper sensor than one that is dull.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Жыл бұрын
I think the point about sharpness is the quality of that sharpness and the image rendered by a lens. For me the S5 is overly harsh / sharp, to the point that it appears very digital in it's quality - it's not something that necessarily lends itself to feeling organic or cinematic. Yes there are ways of "softening" it up, but you'll always struggle to match the quality of an image that comes from a RED, an Arri or even the S1H. Adding a pro mist to a sharp modern stills lens will only get you so far, it won't let you match the image coming from an old vintage lens. But yeah totally get what you're saying, generally better to start with something and take away from it.

I experienced a lot of alliasing and moire in 1080 and also the cropped 4k60 with the S5, which disappointed me. Now I have an a7 s iii and the crazy thing is apart from the full size hdmi, good autofocus and better codecs at higher framerates the S5 is a so much nicer camera to use. Just the body even though it is a third of the price feels so much more premium and the menu system is a 100 times better. Sometimes it really hurts that I spent so much more on the a7 s iii for so little.
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Жыл бұрын
@@kunterbuntfilm touch wood I've never encounted the dreaded moire issues. I think the point I was trying to get across is that all these cameras are pretty comparable, interestingly I believe the A7siii also lacks an optical low pass filter (I think) - I think ergonomics and usability are a key factor when buying a cam and is over looked. It's the main reason I couldn't get behind the pocket cinema cams, despite amazing menus and image quality I found the cameras a nightmare to use. I got the S5 with both the kit lense and a free Panasonic 85mm lense,for $2200 at BestBuy. I just couldn't find a better camera for anywhere close to that deal. But to my surprise though,and this is a tip for anyone like me who doesn't know a whole lot about cameras, lightning is the key, it is a shame I had to spend over $2000 to finally realize that being lazy will not get you anywhere. You have to take the time to prep the location,set up lights properly and only then you can get great results. I still suck at doing this, but whatever I am just having fun. By the way, any links that could direct me to an affordable 50mm lense? Thanks

Also an S5 video-shooter and I love it. The only downside is the 60p crop and I would love to shoot 5,9k internally... other than that: 1/8 mist filter, 4K dci 30fps recording, 24fps video-timeline (subtle slowmotion from 30 to 24fps) and the image is amazing. Paired with some good glass the results are stunning. And yeah... I am tired of people smashing on the auto-focus while recommending much worse and expensive cameras that only have their autofocus going for them. Also I'd add that High end Cine cameras dont have IBIS as it can distort the image - the Image is king and if it wobbles in a movie it can really take you out of the experience and most big movies will have a whole department to make sure the camera is stable and use external gimbals and steadicams while for handheld cameras the weight and bulk helps.

Case in point: Late summer of 2021, I bought a rave-reviewed G9 and used it last week for photographing a literature class in a room with rather dim lighting conditions. The photos (taken in RAW) are horrid even at 800 ISO, with excessive noise, bad dynamic range, and poor colour rendering. I love my S5, I'd also recommend the S1. It's heavier and the v-log is a £160 upgrade but it comes with far more recording times, most of which are unlimited, a full size HDMI, higher res screens/ viewfinder and more customisation option. Grab it pre-owned for a steal at around £1200. Most underrated camera on the market.

Good tip, how's the IBIS on it? Does it also have anamorphic features? Can't really go wrong with the majority of the Panasonic line up
@ScreenFiends

@@EdProsser Yep, it has pretty much all the same features and slightly better IBIS, full sized HDMI and more internal recording options. The S1 and S5 compliment each other perfectly. The S5 is lighter so is better for gimbal work and casual shooting whereas I find the S1 I tend to use as an A-cam due to the unlimited recording. I also prefer the S1 for wildlife, though the S5 can lock onto smaller subjects a bit faster.

@@EdProsser It may be a bit better but until Panasonic finally switch the PD the difference is pretty negligible. I'm from a filmmaking background and personally like to be in full manual control but as I've got into wildlife photography (as a hobby) it would be nice to have AF performance more on par with the competition. Outside of the AF the cams are the best bang-per-buck on the market.

I saw an A7 III second hand for about $1150 with a lens, but I found another offer for the S5 for around the same price with 20-60mm lens and extra batteries. Shutter count around 300, so still brand new. And yes, I too can't justify spending all that extra money for very little useful upgrades.

The S5 has still the best internal processing compared to the S5II. Like you said, the S5 has a very sharp image, but it is not oversharpened, it just like a RAW photo. It means you can still softer in post if you like, the advantage of the S1H is clearly how it handles moiré at the cost of some slightly smoothed out fine details. On the other hand the S5II has a very digital look, the image has clearly bad edge sharpening even in Vlog, making the fine details a bit rough. Without cropping it maybe hard for some to see the difference but once you spot it, it's hard to prefer the image of the S5II to the S5.

Its not just af. Af is arguably a niche feature in the real world, at least to some users. My gripes with s5 have more to do with colors and slow rate of shots for action stills. Hi Jason, I did the same move from Nikon (I was a true Nikonista for years in fotography) in 2020, ending up with the S1H (the S5 wasn't available then). And, I am more than happy with my choice. When selling my whole Nikon Equipment just a few weeks ago to a local dealer, I just kept 2 lenses for Nikon F-mount: a very cheap 50mm f1.8 and a fisheye from Samyang - I adapt those with a Novoflex adapter to the L-mount. Had the S5 been available when I was looking for a serious video camera - it would have been my choice! You will be amazed by the color science!

I’m also looking to upgrade from Nikon to mirrorless. I want something small with good looking lenses. Nikon’s Z lense design are horrible, nothing attractive about them. Canon has excellent lenses but aside from being very expensive they’re huge! This mirrorless S5 checks all the boxes, full frame, compact, and the lenses actually look good and fit well with the camera and are well priced, specially the F1.8 range. Everyone cries about the AF but like you said, no camera is perfect and I’m willing to go manual with focus, plus that price! They’re almost giving it away now!

@@EdProsser I first got the SIRUI S35 1.33x f1.8 35mm in the L mount, giving amazing results even wide open. More recently, bought the SIRUI 1.25x Adaptor which I have been testing with a variety of spherical lenses with varying success. Best results so far with the kit Lumix 20 ~ 60mm, which auto focusses and shooting on APSC coverage, is usable from 20mm! Also tested on Super Zoom bridge cameras: SONY RX10 Mk4 and Lumix FZ2500, both providing a path to affordable Anamorphic zooms with good results. I also own and yet to test some legacy glass incl. the Helios 44M, Taukamar 50mm f1.4 and Nikkor 105mm f2.5 among others. You can see my latest uploads on my Channel. Your images with your primes are LUSH! especially the indoor available light footage!

Absolutely fantastic imagery (especially the colorful scene at 04:54) also a really nicely edited review. I bought a Fujifilm X-H2S to complement my X-T3, but if I weren’t in the Fuji system already I would really have considered picking up a S5(ii).

Thanks for checking my review out and the kind comment! I've never used a Fuji before but am tempted to get one to get me back into stills / street photography. I've just spent a couple of weeks shooting / testing out the S5 ii, will have a vid out in that soon!

@@EdProsser It definitely is a fantastic camera to help you fall in love with photography again. It did this exact thing for me coming from a Canon DSLR. Even though I am leaning more to video these days, the fun experience of the retro dials and film simulations make photography a very interesting hobby again.

@@BTMovieSecondChannel yeah I've lost that magic in recent years! I used to love stills photography, but also a symptom of the profession, too much camera time on the job often means I can't bare to pick one up in my spare time!

What i miss , yeah the apc crop on 4K is hard .but acceptable. But i wish they put a 2,7K resolution i wish to avoid to rec in 4K to get 2.7 k . i like this resolution 1440p but you either 1080 or 4K. i wanted to wait for gh6 when i wanted to make the switch . despite i have such best lens on gh5 . but i saw a s5 used at 1200€ i directly buy it and don't regret. i do feel that if we had the new processor from gh6 we would have 120 images in 4K or 4K 60 without crop in 10 bit . or even a 4K 10 bit 100fps. but gh6 (this year) s5 2 years ago . so i guess the new s5 will be perfect in the package if its same price. There is decent L mount lense now .(addition of 50 + 85 + 16 latelety) and special mention for sigma also to release some good L mount lens over the last year.(i dont think sigma lens saved S5/S1/S1H) in a sens . 85 mm 1.8 is cool small and decent af i would recommend, also sigma art 50 mm 1.4 is great. I have Meike 35 T2.1 i absolutly love it since it reduce a bit of sharpness. but it's a bit pricey . Seems like the SIGMA 20mm and 24mm f1.4 DG DN Art are really great. If i have to rank my lenses : 1 Sigma 50 1.4 art lens 2 SIGMA 24mm f1.4 DG DN Art 3 meike 35 mm t2.1 (for is cinematic soft render) 4 lumix 85 1.8 (great af/price) 5 FD lenses : canon 50 fd 1.4 + 135mm 3.5 6 85 1.4 sigma art lens (better but more expensive than lumix one) if you switch between photo/video i would recommend this one over the lumix. To be honest all sigmas lens are perfect fit for S5 (newest are a bit expensive ) but you can definalty find a 50/35 mm 1.4 sigma art used , whereas the 24 is new and 85 recent. For "cine lens" Meike 35mm T2.1 is great then maybe check dzo for other mm. And FD lens works really great so if you are in budget or have an other renders you should definatly check it.

I shoot with the DZOfilm Vespids which pair well with the S5, like you say with Meike they counter act the sharpness! Most of the footage I'm the review is shot on the Vespids.

I've heard that too, makes sense to release a mk2. The pricing of the S5 gives it the edge over the competition. Although I'm skeptical they'd bring big improvements in AF.

yes it really surprised me too - I thought I'd bought a fairly cheap camera at the time - you know it'd be "good enough" was really pleased with the results. The only thing that maybe betrays it a bit is the sharpness.

Hey Ed just stumbled across your channel, when shooting VLoG is there any sort of standard settings should be doing for example 1 or 2 stop lower or above? Av never shot in VLoG and doing weddings at the moment so dont want to mess it up at someone biggest day
@EdProsser
@EdProsser Жыл бұрын
It will depend on your camera, but generally for wedding stuff I guess you're going to be exposing for skin tones, if you're in low light try to over expose a little to protect detail in shadows. But obviously be careful not to blow highlights. The S5 is fairly forgiving but it has its limits!. Use zebras or the waveforms to help monitor exposure. Your exposure values will differ to when in a Rec.709 profile. Finally - test test test - don't go into a high stakes situation and shoot vlog for the first time. Shoot some stuff in spare time and review footage and have a go grading it. Better to make mistakes in your own time than when someone is paying you for it!
