@@jeffb8824 Yes, the S5IIX represents far better value and 6K open gate is great to work with. If you're a handheld shooter it's not even close, the S5IIX kills the FX3. The FX3 is better only in 4K60/120p and in some autofocus modes. In other AF modes, the S5IIX performs better.

As soon as they come out with the updated S1, I'm buying. I love what Nikon is doing, i own a Zf myself. But I like to root for the underdogs. Panasonic make the best hybrid cameras over the other competition in my opinion. What they offer for video is amazing. Their alliance with Sigma, and Leica gives you really great quality glass.

I know three people that went GH7 to G9ii and one person that went S5IIX to S5II. The GH7 -> G9ii people all used Resolve, so prores raw meant nothing to them, shoot in cool climates so the fan meant nothing, especially since the g9ii already doesnt overheat even in the warm, they don't shoot on a lot with other Arri cameras, so log color grade matching with arri cameras meant nothing to them, etc. Just like you said at the end - we convince ourselves we need coverage for all these extreme edge case scenarios, but 99.9999% of the time it's just us fooling ourselves that we will ever be in a situation that calls for it. While the S5IIx has some neat awesome tech features like the live streaming ability and such, I know for a fact I will never actually "need" it.

Nice, as always. For me, mostly a video shooter behind the camera: 1. Always work on autofocus improvements. 50% of the time in normal conditions I still have to use the focus ring to acquire focus, then "C" does take over nicely. 2. Rolling shutter. From what I read, this is not firmware fixable, but I rarely pan at all because of it. 3. I wish it had a higher resolution LCD screen 4. I wish I could change the focus peaking colors via a button. 5. Use some of the marketing budget to hire someone like yourself to TOTALLY test and figure out the camera B4 release. Cameras are so damn complex nowadays and it was really frustrating to set it up, especially autofocus settings.

half of your problems are fixable with external monitor which you want especially if you are recording since on such small display you will think you are in focus and will be badly surprised in the post. I will rather have external monitor that I choose than bigger body to fit 5''.

@@mike_k. I do use a monitor. FP is set to one color on the monitor and another on the LCD. The HDMI feed for info can only go to the monitor or the LCD (not both). If you send it to (at least my monitor) the monitor the info is across the top and smaller letters/numbers than LCD so what's the point. Plus the waveform cannot be sent to the monitor. It makes it awkward to have to use have the screen folded out and the monitor mounted.

Great video Shane, covered all the points I love about using the S5II. On the 4 channel audio issue, I noticed you edit with FCP. You probably know this but you can select a box to disable any empty audio channels when importing clips which solves that issue easily. I leave that on now I use as S5II. I’m guessing other NLEs like DaVinci or Premiere might have similar options on import.

The Lumix S5IIX is such a valuable camera! No other Full-Frame Camera in that price range has so much videocentric features! I own the original S5 for a couple years now and got the S5IIX in July. I absolutely love the two cameras. Worked with Sony in the past, owned a Canon R6 before. But I think the Lumix cameras are so much better in terms of video quality and dynamic range. The autofocus is capable enough and in most of my video work, I shoot manual focus anyway.

I don't shoot a lot of slow motion. But, having PDAF at 60p and 120p would be nice. I'm hoping they can change that with a firmware update. Since the S9 has the same sensor, I would hope it that such a change is possible. That being said, I use DaVinci Resolve for all of my editing, color grading and visual effects work for my videos, And Resolve has fantastic tools for slowing footage down in post without a noticeable loss in image quality. The few times I've done that, the results have been very good. As far as adding camera info to an external monitor, that really isn't an issue for me. The last time I had a camera transfer info to an external monitor, the information was baked into the footage. Even still, I can look down at the camera's LCD screen and see the information, settings and all, quite easily, Even on bright days, the text on the LCD still stands out from what I'm used to seeing. I also have a velcro sun hood that I can quickly strap onto the camera's monitor and make it easier to see the screen. I have the S5ii, and to be honest, it is my favorite camera to date. The image quality is noticeably better than the FX30 I had before. And LUMIX skin tones and overall color rendition is as close to what I see with my own eyes as I've ever seen from a camera.

I’ve had my S5M2X a month. I got a great deal buying the 14-28, 20-60, and the 70-300. The 14-28 was essentially free, 20-60 only $200 in the package and the 70-300 was $100 off, Great value. The viewfinder is a bunch better than the Fuji xt4 I had. The focus in either mode is better than the Fuji. The manual focus works great, I’ve set mine to linear focus with 300 degree throw. The zoom lenses are bigger, but are meeting my needs for my personal travel photography. The ability to have higher iso making good images makes up for any advantage primes might have for me. The weight difference from Fuji to this is not that noticeable. The high res mode is fascinating. I’ve got much to learn about all the different modes and settings for sure. I got the X 80% for the blacked out look, and 20% for the upgraded video. Peace

I found also the 4-channel audio annoying, but in DaVinci it's at least very easy to fix: Select all your clips in the media 'workspace', right click -> clip properties. Go to the audio tab, remove the last three tracks and change the first from mono to stereo, and done. Sounds like a lot but you do it in a few seconds, and for all clip's at the same time.

Really great review! At 2:00 when you said you can shoot in v-log and auto exposure mode - did you mean that the s5ii will adjust iso to compensate for exposure while still maximizing dynamic range? If so, that's extremely valuable to know! I shoot long videos outdoors where the light is constantly changing. Currently in I shoot in autoexposure (Canon) but no log profile because I can't keep it on base ISO. I've wanted to use the fx3, c70, or s5ii but can't determine if I can use auto exposures while shooting log. Is this possible with the s5ii? Thanks so much for all your great and honest videos!
@GeekyNerdyTechy
@GeekyNerdyTechy Ай бұрын
Basically, the auto-exposure on the S5II and X is unreal. It will let you shoot in VLOG and get a properly exposed image when shooting in any of the automatic modes like Aperture, Program, or Shutter. I shoot my videos in Aperture priority and there's very few times I have to pull things around afterwards unless the sun changed drastically. It does a great job auto exposing with Vlog in particular so you don't get any crushed shadows etc.

My wishes for a firmware update: - User-switchable APS-C crop mode, for stills photography (including Raw) as well as for 24-30fps videography. Currently, APS-C crop mode is only engaged when attaching electronically coupled APS-C lenses. - More choices/options for the high-speed photography burst rates, such as 15fps and 20fps. Currently, we only have 9fps and 30fps.
@FilmFlab
@FilmFlab Ай бұрын
You can switch the APS-C mode in stills. I do it all the time! Turn on Ex-Tele mode, then map Picture Size to a custom button, then you can switch to APS-C mode. And in video, you can switch to APS-C in 24p-30p as well. In Q mode, you can map it to switch to FULL to APS-C, or you can change it in the resolution settings.
@pxperimenter
@pxperimenter Ай бұрын
@@FilmFlab The ExTele + picture size workaround only works for JPEGs, but does not affect Raw, unlike the APS-C crop modes of other camera manufacturers. With a real APS-C crop mode, you would - among others - gain a higher buffer capacity when shooting high-speed Raw burst pictures.

It’s basically the same sensor as the original S5 but with PDAF

Similar sensor, but not the same. PDAF is part of the sensor design on a hardware level I think.

Do you have experience with bad internal audio performance quality on S5IIX ? ... Even when it is set to Low gain and -12 Db , its is very easy to overcrack audio. Looks like Sound Limiter does not work as good as in S1H .... I am extremely disappointed with this. I need internal sound recording from 360 degree around me when i am using gimbal or run and gun camera. Never had this problem with G7, G90, GH4, GH5 or S1H.... It is just so easy to burn audio on the S5IIX :/

I am a little surprised that after one and a half years, your criticisms are still the same. Which means that Panasonic has not addressed the main issues via firmware update. Wasn’t Panasonic supposed to be good at delivering substantial updates?

They added a lot to this camera over the last 12 months. The new autofocus modes, IBIS, and Real-Time LUT are all great upgrades. My main gripes are with the AF Modes for S&Q and the HD50/60p. Hopefully they get it sorted out.

Id agree about the grip feeling good, but no one talks about the difference between the original G9 vs this newer style. The G9 was perfect. Id put my a6700 2nd and this 3rd.

About the AF, I find it strange that - to my knowledge - there is no official information from Panasonic stating in which modes/resolutions/framerates the AF defaults back to DFD instead of PDAF. This should really be part of the manual, and the fact that various youtubers and others had to find this out by various tests gives the impression that Panasonic was deliberately not transparent about this restriction.

I own the IIX but why doesn't it shoot 4k/50fps full frame!?! Argh. If I wanted to shoot with a cropped sensor I'd have bought a fckn Lumix GH camera!

My only problem with my G85 is that it's Micro Four Thirds so if I ever buy another digital camera it'll probably be an S5 (unless Panasonic comes out with something better by the time I'd have enough money to upgrade my camera which seems fairly likely considering how broke I am). Those things look awesome.
