In 2023, I came across a video from Senpai Channel featuring you during a Japan trip, and I have to say-it was amazing! I could instantly tell that you’re a talented cameraman. Your creativity and skill really stood out in the way the scenes were captured and brought to life. Inspired by your work, I decided to upgrade my gear and now proudly own the S5IIX. Your passion for videography is truly inspiring, and I’d love to hear any tips you might have for getting the most out of this camera. Keep up the fantastic content-your channel is a real gem for enthusiasts like me!

I started with the GH5. Went to the A7iv > FX30 > LUMIX S5ii. The last camera I had was the Sony FX30. They finally added Shutter Angle to the FX30, but, the firmware also broke other settings. I had my eyes on the S5ii/x for a while. Then when the firmware glitch happened with the FX30, I found a "Like New" S5ii at MPB for $1,375. I've had the S5ii for about a month now, and I couldn't be happier. To me, the S5ii has more accurate colors and better skin tones, hands down. The last firmware for the S5ii, which was already on my S5ii when I got it, has made the AF pretty reliable based on my experience with it. I've owned the BMPCC4K and love BRAW. So, I can see a Blackmagic camera in the future as well. Also, the Canon C80 looks promising as well. But, for me, LUMIX compared to other brands has the most accurate colors and skin tones. So, I'll probably always run with a LUMIX going forward. Glad I subbed to your channel, so I can keep up with LUMIX.

When you shoot in log, you can have same skin tones color in post, whether it's Sony or Lumix. That's the advantage of shooting in log, and s-log 3 and v-log are very similar...Lumix color is better only if you shoot with internal preset settings

I've been on Lumix since the GH3 and have had the GH5, GH5s, S1, S5, and now the S5ii. Right before the S5ii released, I felt I was really in need of a camera with good AF for my wedding work, so I purchased the Sony A7IV (All my other cameras were still Lumix). The A7IV was a decent camera but I still preferred the Lumix colors over the Sony. Once the S5ii released, I sold the Sony and bought the S5ii right away. I absolutely love this camera and I have filmed over 150 weddings in the past 2 years and can confidently say this is the ultimate wedding camera for me with the new AF system. I do wish there was full frame 4k60 and 4k120 for other type of work but I'm sure it'll come sometime in the near future. Thank you Lumix for all you have done in my life!

Well said Dustin! I switched from Sony to Lumix this year and can’t believe I didn’t do it sooner! Each to their own and everyone’s use case is different. As someone that shoots long form interviews and podcasts having a camera that overheats in 4K (A74) was a deal breaker. As much I loved the image from the Sony sensor and the entire ecosystem of lenses and accessories, I was losing time and money which is not cool. Lumix had me at internal fan and SSD recording! (Which the Sony’s still don’t do!). Waiting in anticipation for what Lumix does next 💥

So I actually started on the GH4 back when Atomos was starting to become big. They were the first cameras our corporate team bought and they worked well in most scenarios where we had good light. When we didn’t though, it was rough. The GH5 and GH5S were huge improvements with chroma noise though, which made them a lot easier to work with. We ended up grabbing the EVA1 too (which that team still shoots with today), but even though it’s a very capable cinema body, there wasn’t really anything special it offered when compared to similarly priced bodies, especially when Blackmagic’s Ursa Mini 4.6K was finally in a much better spot sensor-wise, and was just a more fun and intuitive camera to use (the EVA1’s menu system definitely looked and felt like a beta product). All that said though, I ended up going to Fujifilm because of the feature set you got for the value. The X-T3 in my case was the first Fuji body I shot with, and the fact that it had 4K 60fps 10-bit internally with an APS-C sensor for around $900-$1,000 in 2018? Not to mention their X-Trans sensors and film simulations/color science was just really clean and fun to work with, it was a no-brainer, and it’s still my preferred brand to shoot with today until they lose out on feature sets.

@CameraTim

@@DustinArmstrongPro Yeah, can't really blame the GH4 much though because it came out back in 2014, which is crazy to think about. It was definitely groundbreaking for the time, and honestly in the right shooting conditions, it still can pull off some clean imagery. Fuji literally came out of nowhere in the video space. The X-T3 is really what put them on the map, and now that they're coming out with their own medium format cinema camera in the GFX Eterna, I'm really curious to see where they'll go.

I bought an S1 second hand for a good deal and now have an S5IIX as my main camera. I'm not heavily invested in LUMIX at the moment with only 2 bodies and 2 lenses so a system switch wouldnt been too bad if i wanted to do it. I do agree that the FF Lumix line of cameras have the best image out currently, which is what keeps me with a foot always in the door. I'm waiting for the release of the S1II or S1IIX or S1HII whatever they call it. If that camera can deliver, that will be what will make me go all in on LUMIX. The S1HII has the potential to be THE camera. The destroyer of worlds video powerhouse to eclipse the other brands. And it doesn't even need anything fancy to do that. I hope Lumix delivers on whatever they're cooking because they can easily release a camera that could be the camera to beat. Highly underrated brand in the eyes of most photo/video professionals.

I have always been a video guy. I have always been opposed to getting a camera that was not made for VIDEO. ie. DSLR and photo cameras were beneath me. I bought a Panasonic EVA-1 because of the RAW output and have loved that camera because it was "CINEMA"!!! ...but then... I got some pretty good experience using a GH5. It was a good little camera. Also, I was getting tired of traveling with bigger gear. When I learned about the LUMIX S5II, I was very intrigued and I bought one. After my first shoot, and not even uncovering the finer autofocus options, I bought a S5II-x. I now travel with 2 cameras in one backpack, and have the best looking footage I've ever shot, AND - have become a photographer in the process. I like my footage better than the stuff I get from my peers, who use Canon and Blackmagic with religious dedication. I can't echo the sentiments of this video enough (minus experience with the S1).

I liked the closing statement about the upgrade path. I currently use Lumix S5IIX. Many a time, I wanted to buy my next lens (70-200 or 16-35) but didn't go ahead because of the upgrade path. Then, I thought of selling my S5IIX but was reluctant because I like the camera. Thought of waiting patiently for the next announcement from Lumix. Not that I am going to buy their new camera immediately. But it's always good to know that you can upgrade your gear without changing the ecosystem. Lumix should instil that confidence in its customers. This video gives me some hope...😀

12:00 The Limix brand is old brand. It is from 2001, so now over 23 years old brand. Panasonic chose to use "Lumix" because "Panasonic" brought up the idea of microwave ovens and toasters or television when people heard it. So the "Lumix" was an answer to "shield" camera division from Panasonic negativity. And it partially works, but everyone still calls them really "Panasonic". Using "Lumix" is like using a "EOS" or "Nikkor".

They are so close to a perfect camera for me. I know it is more than I will ever need, but if I could have more on the photography side for higher resolution regular photos with a bit better AF; I don't think I would ever want anything more. Just like reframing photos alot, so 25 megapixels doesn't always cover it. The shifting sensor for High Res photos was an excellent incentive--just not a super flexible mode for different types of photography. The colors and image quality just gives such a natural & smooth; almost "film like vibe" that made me pick the S5II over the Sony A7iii.

I will never trade my Phase Detection Autofocus system for something like the S1H with its contrast autofocus. I used to have the Lumix G7 and the A7SII, but after buying the A7SIII, I can’t imagine switching to anything like the S1H with Contrast AF like my G7/A7sII. For the past three years of owning the A7SIII, I haven’t needed anything better, and I probably won’t for the next five years. Lumix still has a long way to go when it comes to rolling shutter performance and autofocus reliability, even after six years since Sony released the A7III and four years since the A7SIII. They are still behind. The A7SIII, FX3, and similar models already provide everything we need to achieve perfection in all kinds of situations.

I've used Panasonic and Sony on and off over the years, but I've never enjoyed Sony. It's like a computer, not a thing for creating. Lots of features it doesn't even know how to do, the bodies are poorly updated. I remember a student at a workshop who got a new A1 and found it wouldn't focus on his dogs in video. Still an unsolved problem. Panasonic makes me happy, at the end of the day I became an unofficial ambassador in our state. I shoot everything on two S5IIX's and have no reason to want anything different or better. I recently got an S9 with the 18-40 for Christmas and it's great. The video that comes out of this is unreal. High dynamic range, detail, open gate, wow.

You're a good example of how people should go about doing youtube before buying a camera. But yes in regards to the S9, they removed the record limit with the most recent firmware upgrade so there is no longer a record limit HOWEVER it will overheat eventually when you're recording. I've done some tests and I'd say in 6k open gate, you'll probably have a guaranteed 45 minutes of record time, but you can definitely go longer if the environment is not too hot. I've been using the S9 for talking head stuff on my channel like this video and I haven't even gotten a heat warning yet while I've been filming so it's really solid for youtube content talking head stuff

The only firmware update I want for Lumix S5ii to have is PDAF on 1080P 60 on Full Frame mode. PLEASE let this happen. The first camera I used professionally was a Canon. I shot weddings with that camera. Then I was able to buy a Lumix G85 and the IBIS and the colors blew me away. The micro jitters that Canon and Sony's videos had were amplified whenever I cut back to Lumix clips. And the colors, I know it's subjective, but damn did Sony's pre-A7iii and A6XXX series camera sucked--they had brown undertones and it just made their videos muddy and hard to work with. Those reasons solidified my decision to stick with Lumix even tho the autofocus was nonexistent. The huge knock tho for me is that the Lumix S5ii still has the autofocus limitations. I shoot primarily on Full HD 1080/60, and it just sucks that I had to crop in when I want to have decent AF.

Honestly, the HDMI lag is the only issue for me, and I can't believe Lumix still didn't address this issue. I sold S5II a few months ago and was exploring other options, but as you said, quality/features to price ratio is unbeatable with Lumix, so I got S5IIx for a killer deal. Lack of an upgrade path sort of sucks, but not really. In this price range there's no better option and anything more expensive is in a different league for different levels of productions and for a higher level it's usually easier to rent gear that's needed for a project. That said, we all love to buy expensive gear, so not a very strong statement haha

I think it's a hardware limitation that's why the GH7 is the first camera to address this. Could be wrong though. I agree being in crippling credit card debt all the time is my favorite😂😉

@@DustinArmstrongPro I just don't like that RAW over HDMI has such a strong advertisement coming from Lumix, while that HDMI output is so crippled. It's like saying "oh, this car can do 0-60 in 5 seconds... if you drop it from a plane". Yeah you can record RAW, but only on a tripod with stationary shots, because I tried pulling focus and it's just a nightmare. And turning off audio over HDMI kinda forces you to buy the 7" version of BMVA, because it has mini xlrs at least. Gonna definitely keep S5IIx for social media and travelling, simply unbeatable for the price, and luckily autofocus works just fine with adapted lenses, but yeah, looking for some "higher level" camera as well, to run me into some debt so I don't feel too comfortable and financially stable haha

Switching systems is not as easy as it seams. It's very expensive process. I know because I've been using Sony and Lumix for around a year. And also there are no good high end cameras in Lumix ecosystem so if you outgrow your S5IIX (which does not even have full frame 60p) you have nowhere to move (unless switching again to Canon, Sony or Red).

I’ve just bought the S5II bundle (kit lens + 2 primes), which was cheaper than the Sony A7C II or Canon R6 II bodies alone. It’s been sitting right in the corner of my room unpacked since Monday. This is my first time switching camera systems (though I might keep one of my Fujis as a backup option with different focal lengths). Until now, I’ve been using Fujifilm-when I started, the X-T3 was a solid choice for both video and photography. I hope the Lumix won’t let me down in terms of reliability, and I have big hopes that Panasonic will continue to improve in the full-frame market. So far in theory top 3 is Sony, Canon and Nikon. Lumix is almost there.

I love the way Lumix cameras look, but what brought my attention the most is when I handled a Panasonic Lumix full frame camera with the settings screen on top and I felt like I was holding a nuke warhead. Not even Leica came close to the build quality. Also I've been using Sony DSLRs for decades, the first one was an A200 for 7 years and the next one an A77II. Planned to go for the A99II but only scalpers were selling it for ridiculously high prices. I bought an A7IV and I'm more disappointed than anything. The ergonomics suck, E mount lenses are horrible and overhyped and just drain your camera's battery because it has to move heavy glass floating mid air, plus being fully electronic so in case something fails you no longer can override manually.

Lumix full frame camera is good choice if you want to shoot in 24-30fps without lots of mouvement...or if you consider it as apsc camera (4k60 only in apse mod and better rolling shutter in apsc mod)... If you do lot of 4k60 shot, more run and gun shot with great AF, Sony is definitely better choice In my case I sold my Lumix s5IIx and bought the Sony zv-e1 for wedding, videoclip, corpo project...AF is incredible , 4k60 in FF mod, great rolling shutter, and the lightness saves my arms after 12-14 hours of wedding coverage. I work 90% of the time handheld, the stabilization does a good job (even if Lumix is slightly better in this area)

The short answer: No. Work with what fits for you and the work that you create. The long(er) answer: Work what's best for you, not what others tell you. Be informed, but shoot with the camera long enough to decide if you like it enough to overcome their shortcomings. All manufacturers do, and there is no perfect camera. I'm glad Panasonic works for you. They make some pretty dope cameras and they've matured far greater since their S1 series.

I gotta say. Both the fx30, a7IV and lumix S5iix are all so tempting. Especially because I mainly do photography, but wanna do more with videowork in the future. Plus most of my friends all switched to sony as well (from Canon). But there some things I truly miss on cams from Sony. Mostly SSD recording, internal fan (for overheating), shutter angle and firmware updates. But my cons for lumix are the meh AF, not so big ecosystem (it is growing tho) and rolling shutter. Maybe I just need to rent both of them (a7IV and the S5iix) and just try them out myself.

But if someone hires me and I'm required to bring my gear I'm shooting on LUMIX. They may prefer I shoot on what they prefer, but to make it easy for them I always tell them I'll provide them with a V-LOG to REC709 conversion LUT to make it easy for them if they feel unsure.
