Cyclops are the children of Poseidon and in the arc where they escape from one, he puts out it's eye and, while escaping, can't help but gloat. Letting it know who beat it. While being ignorant. Italy and Spain are not "slop" countries, but they are former poor countries and some parts like southern Italy still is poor. Making calories dense, simple food from few ingredients is staple cuisine that reflects their economic status. Spain was still Fascist until late 70s and Italy got on their feet also around 70s. Look at northern English cuisine, you get similar style of cooking. Chop everything up, throw it into a pan, cover with flour based product, let it cook.
