What's worse, is I came into this film AS a Jim Jarmusch fan (grew up loving Ghost Dog, Dead Man etc.), and even then, I found it to be a boring, pretentious slog with no rewatch value. Just a total waste of talent, which I guess was "the message" in the first place. Jokes on me. Tee hee.

Really great stuff. The meta self referencing horror movie (not to be confused with parody) might have started with the 1994 movie Wes Craven's New Nightmare and Scream (1996). Of course these movies didn't fold back on themselves, but referenced to other movies of the same genre or with the same writers/characters/actors. I think that might be the key. As long as you keep the references slightly outside and you maintain stakes and a narrative structure, you avoid a positive feedback loop, which in physics lead to self destruction of a given system. As soon as you spell out: "We are in a movie, we know it and we don't even care", you press the self destruction button, since nothing matters and the whole movie is meaningless.

I just watched Dead Don't Die last night, and was confused. This morning I had an epiphany; what of it was supposed to saying that movies with a message are hollow and hard to invest in emotionally? I found this video searching "Dead Don't Die" and having watched it i am convinced that I'm right. The point is not the "message". I think this movie is meant to show how hollow and disappointing movies with "messages" really are. Even if you agree with the message, you still want a movie to serve the story first and let the message (if there even is a deeper one) be subtle. I think his deeper message is that "deep" movies are actually quite hollow. Even this movie was made hollow and unentertaining to emphasize that point! THIS movie, with its deeper meaning, about how hollow "deep" movies are, was very hollow! It's really very brilliant if that is in fact what is going on. If, however, it actually is meant to be truly "deep" about climate change and consumerism and right-wing politics, then it's just a steaming pile that was an absolute waste of my time watching last night!

I think Jarmusch wanted to eat his cake and have it too - making a film that simultaneously tried to comment on current issues and be a subversive comedy, and failed at both. I would be interested in hearing if your take changes with time, since all this film has garnered from me over the years is increased apathy.
@ericsmith1508Ай бұрын
@LUMOSHROOM oh I feel certain I will grow far more apathetic towards it over time. Whatever it was meant to be, and whatever it actually turned out to be, it was NOT worth a re-watch from me! 😆 Once was more than enough. I will say though, of all the unanswered questions this film left me with, the one that may actually haunt me enough to try and find an answer for is: was Adam Driver intentionally channeling Christopher Walken in the scene at the dinner or was it accidental? When he's telling "Cliff" he thinks it's zombies did it, the vocal cadence and inflections are an almost perfect Walken!😂 "You know...what I'm thinking? ...ZOMBIES. Yeah...ghouls. Ya know? The undead"😉😁
@JasonJason210Ай бұрын
I think this the right interpretation, especially when you consider the scene near the end where the two main characters discuss the movie script. However, I think it doesn't quite work and that this approach is going to be lost on most of the audience

My wife and I randomly chose this movie to watch last night. We knew nothing about it ahead of time. During this slow & strange film, we both kept looking at each other with confused faces, trying to figure out what the point of it was. The tone was so strange & off-putting - was it supposed to be serious or comedic? It seemed like the director attempted to do both, mixed with vague analogies & messaging. It was super slow, uninteresting, pretentious & just didn’t work. Film production & effects were good. The actors were fine and performed well. It’s just too bad they didn’t have better material overall.

I rewatched No Country For Old Men and I just realized that actor Caleb Jones is in both movies. He is Bobby Wiggins in The Dead Don't Die and at the end of No Country For Old Men he is one of the kids that approaches Anton Chigurh after the car accident. He is the one that says "Mister, you got a bone sticking out of your arm."

It's so... toothless. If feels like commentary done simply cause the director wanted to make a movie where he said what he wanted to say, and nothing else. I enjoy The Dead Don't Die because I admire it's clear desire to do nothing. It feels like it was deliberately set out to disappoint, and then everything else fell into place to disappoint around the planned disappointments. Even by luck it didn't have a single element that did well. Its rolling a nat 1 of movies.

Watched this with my mother. Was already iffy about it going in with the ham fisted environmental message. Like, I'm anti-fracking myself, let alone polar fracking, but they took it too far and without any style, came across as preaching. When we realized it had been 45 minutes and exactly 2 people had died to zombies in a Bill Murray zombie movie, we quit and spent the afternoon watching something else. How did such a boring B-class movie get that many high level actors and why did they waste them in quiet, uncomfortable and boring chit chat?

A movie so bad I needed to lookup a video like this to commiserate afterwords. Simply pointing out that we are destroying the climate & comparing our materialism to zombies isn't enough to be interesting. I guess the most interesting part of the meta commentary is under reacting to dire circumstances - but even that feels shallow and obvious. Going into the movie my expectation was horror comedy, so I wasn't expecting it to take itself too seriously, but the closest it got to comedy was Adam Driver in smart car or the fashion zombie, and even then it only reached slight amusement. Just a huge let down all around.
