Lunada Bay Palos Verdes | Biggest LA Surf since last Winter

The biggest surf to hit CA since last Jan '23 hit today. The next swell is on track for the weekend and is likely to be in the same size class. Swell direction looks even more west, so SoCal could be a little bigger than Thu/Fri.

When I was a kid (70s), almost all the surfing films/footage were of Hawaii. I was really starved for California footage, but I understood that filming these spots was not feasible. Now I just open the laptop and enjoy the highlights from THAT day. Ha! I guess I sound like an old man. Anyway, thanks for the great footage.

@@tucko11 *Take my word for it, (I'm 65 y.o.) the 80s had the biggest & Best* *Story;* *I got Lunada for my 1st time there, 1/3 bigger than this, clean and hollow glass off, in the 80s.* *I just came back from 20'+ Rincon that day, and 40+ Haleiwa days before, the swell I just caught in Oahu was now hitting California.* *The sun was going down, and I saw the locals weren't on the peak, or outside enough for the sets.* *I paddled out past the stink eye, and murmurs, and one of the "Boyz" followed me.* *Just then the biggest set I saw (eyeballed it from cliff for 15 min.) was rolling in, X3 swells blocking out the sun.* *The crowd of 7 was screaming and heading out to get around and over the shoulders, the guy behind me followed, but was about 15 yards back.* *Having respect, I headed for the last, and biggest swell, just beyond the peak, I flipped it around, dug in hard, and shoved into the take off, as the local tried his best to burn me on the shoulder.* *I didn't say a word, but he bitched out and pulled back last second, which was a good thing, because where he was the lip launched freakishly, he would have put on a show.* *It was about 4-6 X overhead, thundering sections (that wanted to kill me) kept hitting about 8 ft to the outside of me, so I kept pulling up under them (X4).* *Soon after, it backed off to being a slopey shoulder wave, kinda like a freeway off-ramp, which I did big GS turns on all the way to the inside.* *I got out, the sun went down, and all those unfriendlies got the Karma Lull.* 👈 *But they all did get the perfect view of me being caved multiple times on the biggest wave (i was told) of the day.* *Tip;* *It's not a good place to go, best let the locals have it.* *I'm always respectful to any locals, even if they're not.* *BTW; Rincon was way better, also, many San Diego reefs will pick up West Swells much better, and there's so many to choose from, especially at Sunset Cliffs, a huge variety.

In all the footage I've ever seen of Lunada until now, it looked pretty mushy. I knew it could hold more size...but I didn't know that it ever had a critical section where the lip pitched out like at many of the more renowned spots. It really is a formidable big wave and I have a *tiny* bit more sympathy for the locals now.

As anyone can see, the shape of the wave is terrible. It's more of a novelty spot cuz it hardly ever breaks. It looks to me like these locals are total kooks! Nobody is really ripping. Kooks are struggling to make the weird bumby shoulder. much rather go down to swamis, cardiff or blacks ... Even big trestles is way more rippable than tired lunada. I'll drive up to Oxnard and keep heading north to Tarantula's at Jalama. You'll never catch these lunada kooks up there....the wave is hollow.
