Both Sides of Lunada Bay Localism Lawsuit Speak Out - The Inertia

The Inertia

Күн бұрын

March 29, 2016 is an important date in surf history. It marks the first time in surf culture’s relatively brief life that the United States legal system has been called upon to act as an arbiter of justice in surfing’s most ubiquitous, yet unspoken social code: localism. And what better place for the theater of the courts to perform its surf dance than Los Angeles, the entertainment capital of the world. The specific location: Lunada Bay.

Lol, and they will. I've been saying it for years, Palos Verdes is the next Dana Point. It's not the surfers that destroy these spots, its the freaking locals who grow up, values change, and next thing you know there's a ritz carlton and a freaking elevator. I recently shot a video of Lunada Bay, posted it to my FB business page and have already had to delete 3 comments, the hate is real and its sad.

@@amateuradventurer8185 I seriously doubt that. I grew up in that area (did not surf Lunada Bay and didn't get along with the guys who did) and I can tell you this. The people who live there will not put up with a resort going up in LB and have the money and power to prevent any such thing from happening. And that includes locals who grow older and "value" change.

In Rio we have a 60 miles coastline with all kinds of breaks , most beach breaks . Now there are a few sort of point breaks , they all have locals but don't act like they own the spot . Be cool and have fun knowing how to behave . Now there is a point break a lot like Snapper Rocks , the locals there are a bunch of douchebags in a bad mean way . Nobody even bother to check the conditions , drive right by . Now if one of them go surf on any other spot and is recognized he better run . He is not gonna get beat up , but will lose his board , four flat tires

I was recently surfing at an undisclosed location with a reputation for localism. It's a great wave but genuinely only one peak. Anyways the people there were actually so nice that I felt bad trying to take a wave and haven't been back since. On the other hand at a break in baja a guy paddled out with a lucha libre mask and started hassling me. I told him he looked ridiculous and and it just motivated me to catch more waves.

Remember my second time in life surfing at Malibu, just moved from Rio to live in L A. A much bigger local dude for no reason while paddling looked at me . i was surfing more at the inside away from him,he was far out with their local friends. Was there surfing leftovers without bothering and snaking waves. He just saw i looked different, board, wetsuit not me,blonde hair, tall but different. Well he went by me again and start talking loud at me,did not understood a word since my english was zero. Anyway got a wave and went out,it so happen he came after me.Once on shore he swing the fin of his board on my. Was not alone had some friends with me. Told one to tell him to give me money to fix,was a 19 skinny kid and him taller and at least 45 pounds heavier, not fat. He just wanted to kick my ass,the year was 83.Had no way out there I was facing him,my friends around and also some of his buds. Thought with myself, shit have to fight this big guy now. My friend said let them go at it,is between them , they all agree. Was the first time these guys saw BJJ in real life,at the time was just JJ.Kept him away from me kicking his legs and knees, grab his legs heads down, put him to sleep. He came up to his senses not knowing what happen, but saw me walking away.still dizzy came running after me. Knew he had to be conscious when was done, just push him he felt lock his head with my legs in a harm lock until he asked to stop.First real fight in my life, never before had one. Was always a JJ athlete never learn to fight, liked only compete, the guy walked away clean. Surf is respect, locals that act like they own the beach usually are not welcome in some other brake. It comes down to,if i can't surf at yours you can't surf on my. Nobody owns the ocean,or part of it is all about respect. I won't drop in your wave and nobody on my,people have drop in my wave few ,,many times.Sucks still is not a reason to fight. Respect the locals just like locals have to respect who is not, unless one or the other have no sense.Saw J Parkisson at Snapper snaking on everybody time after time. Nice guy but bad manners.

It's NOT part of every beach to do ridiculous things like that to people at "Your" surf spot. Yes, certain breaks around the World have a pecking order, but usually your skill level in the water plays an important role too. I've spent over 30 years of my life surfing all over the East Coast, West Coast, Mexico, etc.... and I've never had an issue. I always let my surfing do the talking. What makes me mad (no matter what surf spot) is when beginners learning to surf, surf right in the main line up. They makes it dangerous for all the surfers because they seem to always be in the way (stuck on the inside, dropping in on you, crashing into you, etc). If you're learning to surf, you need to pick a spot down the beach away from the "line up" so you don't get in the way. Also, you'll have a lot more waves to practice on since there isn't a pack of surfers fighting for every set wave.

Gangs in the water. First surfed there in 62. Back then anyone could give it a go. Found it to be a novelty wave. A few years later moved to Hawaii and didn't go out there until 71. Still no problem. Mid 70s it started to change for the worse. Now it's nice to have all the a$$holes in one spot, claiming junky waves as a birthright.

I wonder what he told the others at the jail when they asked what he was in there for? Stealing cars? "No." Armed robbery? "No." Than what are you in here for? "Surfing."

I have autism and I surf. Many times people mistake me for being an asshole. I am just quiet and don't process social cues like regular people. I surf alone and many people don't know me even though I've lived here and surfed my break for 8 years. I try to tell people I'm autistic but they think I'm joking. I've been physically threatened in Hawaii as well because I don't socialize like normal people. I wish everyone was just a little more understanding instead of jumping to conclusions. Not everyone is wired the same way. Some of us have to really try extremely hard to train our brains to pick up subtle social cues.

I lived on the beach at my home break and yes we like locals only but not to this level. These guys were a punks for the most part. This was during a huge swell and they could not handle someone surfing better than they did that day. Surfing exploded after the 70's and radicalized locals have ruined the sport.

Well...that's interesting, like in my Area; if you didn't have parents that paid, and sent ya to college, Well....if you wanted to make Honest decent money, it was the trades for you! Honest Hard work, but necessary, You know for when the college kids got the bigger jobs and Homes. They needed them to be built, Cared for, and Usually dependent on a good Tradesmen to do it, I mean someone had to build the Pyramids for the Pharaohs? So skilled Labor was the way to go, at least in my area, and the trades was the way to obtain to a certain standard of living at least, and that there Lye's the problem? You say go out and get a Job??? At one point, What Jobs? industry was outsourced, and Labor like Trades Saturated with cheap labor! Now that's a Vicious cycle once it starts.!...And thats what happened here in Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, and throughout most the Areas in the US experiencing Growth in late 70's, 80's, and 90's. With Cheap labor Flooding the Nation coming up from the southern border driving down labor prices, while most where taking the money back across the border? With our Politicians Selling out industry to the Global markets, which only served Politicans and MultiNationalists, Bankers, with the explotation of the Nation and Resources, while destroying the Standard of Living etc, with changing the imigration act of 1990? That in its self allowed 700,000 New Imigrations to start Flooding the Nation starting in 1990, and has been every Year Since, Not to Mention the Obama Administration Flooding it even more! So Politicians like Clintons, Bushs, Pelosi's, Fienstines, Newsom, and the Obama's are Getting enRiched? And We are left with the increased Taxs, No Jobs, Left with Coast of Living Rising, Food, Gas, Rent, Property Tax's going through the roof, and the average Person who Labored?....Well...Most don't realize that there are Billions of people willing to flood America to work for a $1.50 an hour, because the Country their fleeing From is the problem, Yet....You are being replaced here in the US for cheep Labor!....And If people dont understand that??? Well....I hope it doesnt happen to you, but it happened to many of my Generation, and that's why Trump was Popular.... but....As Biden is Reading for the Oath?, all Ready Mass's are forming at the Borders, Biden telegraphing going back to the Bull Bush, Clinton, Obama Sell out, and returning back to the problems We had Prior to Trump! The cycle readying itself again...But it will be worst this time, because we have idiots in charge!!!

My dad surfed out there in the 30's, 40's, and 50's, with the original land owners, long before, these new comer "wannabe locals" moved there in the 60's and 70's and started their wannabe localism. When my dad surfed there, the original surfers PV welcomed surfers from everywhere, they'd all surf and dive and fish together, hang out and have big cook outs. And they were always welcomed back. Of course that's when there were probably only about 40 or 50 hard core surfers, and 100 or so, several times a year surfers. Most of those new PV wannabe locals don't surf, and if they do t hey are flaming kooks, and in any event, the entire headland of PV has super shitty sloppy ledger waves, from Torrance all the way around to San Pedro. (Its one the few places in California that you can get away with riding a Simmons board or a kook box). When ever they think its good, there are 100's of other world class spots up and down the coast that blow PV off the map.

Hal, when it comes to mindlessness, you win. I lived in PVE 50 years ago when I was a teenager and the bay boys were stupid rich white punks back then. The stupid rich punks trained another generation and now there's one more generation of spoiled white snowflakes that think they are better than the rest of the world. Of course, they're not. They would get their asses handed to them in Hawaii. The would not dare do that shit on an Australian beach or in a pub. They get away with it in PV because the local police is in on it.

This was bound to happen to these spoiled, entitled jerks. I surfed there in the 70’s & 80’s & the localism was very real. They would damage your car (I parked blocks away) & once they threw a large rock at me while I was on the trail. I scurried back up the hill, confronted the group of punks ready for action. I was pissed because had the rock they threw hit me it could have killed me. They backed off & I let them know if it ever happened again I wasn’t going to talk, I would just start kicking ass beginning with one of them I pointed out. I was a very good & respectful surfer & also an extensively trained fighter & am very glad it did escalate because they stood no chance. You’d get similar hassle at the Indicator but Lunada was the worst of the two.

Call my nose back in the day. Went down there with my jujitsu teacher because his brother and his friend Gil got hassled by the leaders of this gang at Llanada. The way he handled it was amazing he just took me out surfing I was a Bluebell some kid from California. He just went down there to see what the story was. He found it amusing that his brother and his friend had a hard time. We were going to go home. They told him to get out of the water but they were talking shit to him, but from far away, he finally had enough put his board down and walked over to them Stuck his head in the middle of the three of them like a lion and just looked at them. Then took one of the boards and broke it over his knee and threw it in his face. Then stuck his head, and again it looked at all of them. They didn’t do shit. He just did his hands off and walked away puked a whole lot of them.

I lived with a nice group of 11 hard core Lunada Bay locals on the North Shore back in 1981. We all shared Carlos"s house together accross from Chris Lundy's place. The stories I heard about Lunada bay seem to be in complete contradiction to how they behaed in Hawaii. Very nice and respectful. Ofcourse on the North shore you are always on your best behavior. But, what I think underscores the whole localism atttitude like at most surf spots is a tradition of localiam passed down to each generation. The honor system. It's not right but it is this aspect of paying your dues which allows you to belong to the tribe. I grew up around the Huntington Pier. That's what you did no questions asked. Lunada bay locals just seem to take it a step further. Good or Bad Surfing is unique. Can you change that? Rules never fit surfing. Ask Frank. Btw, I think Frank was in Hawaii back in 81' along with Jeff and Don Johnston. Aloha Frank!!

I've surfed my home break since I was a little kid. Almost 30 years in the water. Locals get the waves wherever you go, that's just how it is. People who aren't locals tend to be the ones who don't like that and are usually the ones who leave trash, drop in on other surfers etc. When I travel I try to be respectful because I know what it's like. But I also have no problem dropping in on somebody at my home break if they aren't local. Respect gets respect. Don't like it? Who cares

Lunada Bây is a dangerous wave to surf. I think the locals want to keep the outsiders out because they don’t know the break. They will cause turmoil in the lineup and get in the way, I was shagging boards of the rocks for older friends when I was in 5 th. Grade there. I know a few things about all the bay, not just the point. These lawsuits are disturbing to the regular guys who surf there now.

Localism is a way of life in the surfing world. I was a soldier station on Schofield in the 70s. There was a group of us that surfed extremely well. Who in their right mind would mess with a group of trained infantry killers? Not one local ever said a word to us, safety in numbers. The Wolfpack Country Boys never messed with 25th Infantry Wolfhounds.
