LUNAR NEW YEAR FUDE BRUSHES: Koyudo Akabeko + Beautylish Presents Year of the Ox

Let’s take a closer look at the two Lunar New Year brushes from Beautylish for the Year of the Ox. Both brushes are sold out currently, but let’s hope there is a small restock like last year! I wanted to share my thoughts and comparisons on these brushes just in case so you can be prepared to act fast if you are interested. The Year of the Ox begins on Friday, February 12, 2021.

Funny thing : did you notice the one hair falling out at approx. 3:10 ? Great video. The Koyudo brush is back in stock on Beautylish. I just purchased one. It sold out the first time before I was able to get it so I’m happy to have been able to finally get it. Not that I really needed it. My brush collection is massive already.

Excellent thorough review! I purchased the Beautylish lunar brush for the first time and love it. I passed on the Akabeko because it’s shape is so similar to my beloved Sonia G Face Pro (which has become my go to for my Gucci bronzer). Now I regret passing😘

I don’t have the face pro yet so perhaps they are very similar. I just keep missing that brush! Don’t have regrets because you picked up a beautiful new brush and you have already found a brush you love with the akabeko shape! Enjoy!!

The Face Pro is a great brush for sure. I have it as well. The difference between the two is significant though. The Koyudo is made with Gray Squirrel hair and the Sonia G is Saikoho Goat hair. Can’t beat the softness of squirrel. Unless your skin is oily! Squirrel hair and oily skin don’t mix well.

From my understanding, those brushes in the Beautylish Present line where they don't officially disclose the manufacturer, e.g. the Year of the Ox brush and Year of the Tiger brush, etc. are not made by Kumano-based manufacturers. They are still Japanese made but not in Kumano City and that's why they don't come with the Kumano seal on the plastic. Chikuhodo made brushes come with that Kumano seal and that leads me to believe Chikuhodo is NOT the manufacturer of these newer brushes by Beautylish.

@@LexiJong Your review made me buy the Koyudo Akabeko and I love it! Thank you for your detailed and demonstrative reviews. From my understanding, there are a list of criteria that have to be met for brushes to say "made in Japan" and then there's a stricter criteria for brushes to display the Kumano seal. In general, the quality of the brushes made in Kumano is higher than brushes made elsewhere in Japan, but there are other factors that influence that, and given the popularity and demand for Japanese handcrafted brushes today, there are more artisans and manufacturers outside Kumano city who are making really excellent quality brushes today, so they are, dare I say as good as some Kumano-based manufacturers.

The Surratt angle brush is a goat and squirrel combo I believe. That’s why it is not as soft.

Thank you for this. I will try to catch the live tonight. I like both brushes but I should only get one. Which of the two brushes is densest? I would use it for buffing in the meteorites powder. Also, do you use the FO-3 for blush? I am considering the FO-1 or FO-3 but I would want even more density than the FO-4.

Hi Jocelyne! The Beautylish Presents brush is more dense than the akabeko. It will buff lightly but if you truly want to buff in the Meteorites, i recommend something more dense like the Sonia G face one or smooth buffer. The matter face also works well but the others still buff better. I use the Beautylish Presents brush for Meteorites but it is a soft buffing effect. I use the FO-3 for blush and it is more dense than the FO-1 but not significantly more dense than the FO-4. The FO-4 actually feels a bit stiffer on the face because of the shape. The KZ-4 is similarly dense to the FO-3 (very slightly more dense) but it has more spring back to the bristles which allows it to act a bit firmer /less splaying during use. I really like the FO-3 for blush but because of its flexibility, i don’t use it with darker shades that need to be more targeted and blended. It is great for a light wash of color. I hope this is helpful!

Lovely additions to your brush collection! wanted to get the year of the ox brush, but I own the year of the rat brush, and the brush head seemed similar to me, and i was worried about the artwork wearing off.

Thank you! Have you had any issues with your rat brush wearing off? I had no idea that was an issue until recently but i have been very happy with mine. I have definitely heard the complaints online though!

I bought the OX beautylish brush, very nice. Do you know how many years beautylish has been coming out with lunar year brushes. I see that the year of the rat was still on the site last week. I may get that one too.

I didn’t realize the rat brush was back! I have only known them to be doing this for three years but they weren’t on my radar before that so it could be longer. This particular artwork series though started with the pig I believe three years ago. Hopefully someone will correct me if i am wrong!

Hi Lexi great review of the brushes. I am looking to purchase a blue squirrel brush, i was looking at Hakuhodo S102 round and flat finishing brush ,but not sure if this one i need. I go for less is more kind of french way makeup, so i am looking for a brush, that would take product lightly lets say for bronzer all over the face for seamless , very natural sun kissed look, or if i want just glow with Guerlain pearls or for only blush. I dont always wear bronzer and blush at the same time it depends of what look i am going for, so basically i am looking for light , seamless look . What brush would you suggest thank you kindly blessings🙏💕

Hi Giedre! I don’t have any Hakuhodo brushes yet but this one looks gorgeous! I have now added it to my wishlist. From what i can tell online, it looks like it would suit your purposes well but unfortunately i can’t say for certain. I think there are a lot of brushes that you can multitask with but it is really personal preference as to which shape you end up preferring. The lunar new year brushes both could be used for your purposes but they may not be your preferred shape. For the Guerlain pearls, i think any of these brushes work to give you a nice look but if you truly want to buff them in, you may want to consider a flat top buffing brush like the Sonia G face or smooth buffer.
