The reason behind things like the "names" & "personalities" of the other characters in the anime are less clear in the anime than the light novels. In the LN you see them try on occasion but GS himself is the reader's view into the world. Lizard shaman likes cheese then nothing because GS is an extreme murderhobo type PC in a game where everyone else is not, clinging to his goblinslaying obsession is all he can do to keep his PTSD under control. Other characters like guild girl & such try to help him for various reasons but the viewer only sees GS turn away from it instead of a planning episode with side/support characters. The anime has a scene where the party is starting to chat in camp before a dungeon crawl but GS calls then fools & goes off to the side so he can sharpen his blades & such but in the LN you get a bit more inner monolog about why they are fools while they start talking about useless stuff like names & such.

Fate Stay Night's UBW anime had that problem, too. A scene where they go on a picnic looks outwardly pretty normal in the anime, while in the VN he feels guilty about having fun, because of his past trauma.

Personally I liked goblin slayer,I like dark stuff and there were some hilarious scenes too. It obviously isn't any masterpiece writing or something like that but it's an fun series to waste time with if you like dark stuff a bit. Great review and really didn't think that you'd ever do an review for Goblin slayer

@@aronworlen1752 I would say it has creative and interesting fight scene in "theory" (because the manga looks beautiful, almost Berserk at times), better than most anime/fantasy/isekai out there for its grounded realism. But the animation for anime is mid, and pretty "eh" most of the time. Those cool encounters in LN and manga just becomes "eh" because of the anime, which is a damm shame.

if you liked Berserk, you should definitely try Claymore. The anime has a bullshit ending that completely changes the story, but the manga it's based off is pretty damn dope in terms of monsters, power designs and fights, ngl. It's the closest to Berserk a different creation ever got in terms of raw inspiration.

I tell you what this might just be random recommendation but if you want an obscure anime than take a look at Shinsekai Yori or From the new world. I never hear anyone talk about it. I remember watching it years ago and from what I remember it's a quite good mystery/supernatural anime but no-one ever mentions in a discussion with these genres. How could you say skip episode 1 where they build the foundation for this world, lore and rules. You have to know why this show is called Goblin Slayer, why goblins are evil bastard and how they multiplying and why first group died. This is dirty world and even The Priestess is doubting her blessing being trully blessings (mostly used for genocide). Nice D&D campaign :)

I don't remember if it was explained in the show, but when they talk about gods playing games with dice, they're literally telling you the entire universe of this story is basically a D&D campaign or something similar. Though not in the exact sense that the gods are playing as the characters though. Thats why all the names are pretty much just descriptors like species and class and the like. I also don't think you can actually do without the grape scenes. When everyone is sooo numb to violence anymore, how are you supposed to illustrate just how evil, vile, despicable, and irredeemable goblins are? With something that actually shocks people.

Consider how few characters are actually called by their moniker in the story, the bulk of vocatives are nicknames or simply contextually implied and understood. Goblin Slayer is pretty experimental in characterization and world building due to how minimalistic it is, fantasy authors all too often get bogged down in world building that never ends up mattering at all to the story they're telling, like Kingdoms of Amalur having hundreds of wiki pages worth of lore and timelines that span thousands of years over several continents for things that are never even mentioned or alluded to ONCE in the actual game. It's unnecessary bloat. Unless an element of world building has a direct impact on the story being told there's a very strong argument to simply getting rid of it. If Goblin Slayer is called Vincent, Darrow, Tancred or Bob is of no consequence to the story, it doesn't matter, so it can go.

I personally prefer fantasies that feel like a real world, that have interesting lore (not useless tho, lore that improves the story) and smart dialogue in them. I might be cheating a bit, naming the best fantasy ever made, but The Lord of the Rings is the benchmark and my favorite. Overall, most anime fantasies/isekais are trash at worldbuilding. Or may I say generic, all work the same way, all are in rural Medieval Europe, all have RPG element and have Adventure's Guild (I don't think the real Medieval Europe had it). Some who are decent in that area are Ascendance Of A Bookworm, The Ancient Magus' Bride, Mushoku Tensei, Reincarnated as a Slime and Made in Abyss.

@@luckyowl10 against popular opinion Tolkien wasn't that huge of a world-builder as we'd call them today, everything he wrote about Arda is in some way related to the overarching narrative he was telling through his multiple book, while there's very little or nothing on things not strictly necessary for the stories to work. For example, even though they're geographically larger than Middle-Earth and the base of Sauron's power we know almost nothing about Harad and Rhûn, since, for The Lord of the Rings to be effectively told, they are not important. Compare this for example to GRRM writing on the political landscape and economical struggles of places he has 0 interest in ever visiting, like Yi Ti, not!Chinese Empire on the other side of the world that no character of the ASoIaF books has ever or will ever set foot in, and whose influence on the story is second had at its best. Tolkien was rather focused in his approach, writing only about things that really mattered, it only appears so comprehensive because the story Tolkien tells is vast and requires a lot of material to be built upon. Goblin Slayer, however, is one of the smallest scale fantasy stories around, at least certainly amongst those in publication in Japan, its story isn't about the course of civilization, grand political debacles or saving the world. Like, at all. It's a story about trying your best to move past personal trauma and self-sabotaging tendencies; how people's lives are much more affected by small, every day problems nobody wants to fix; and how indispensable the people doing the most thankless and undesirable, but vital jobs are. All of those things are set-up to work on the smallest scale possible, often within the scope of a single individual's internal struggle. There are more than a few hints of the way the world at large operates and its challenges: extra-dimensional invaders who are apparently finessing even the people who oppose them to do so under the invaders' terms; an aggressive political game of chairs between nominally allied groups that pursue their common goal while making sure each of them secures a better position for itself inside and out of their alliances, often to their own detriment; scholars going on mad quests to understand the very nature of reality from its minimal constituints to its largest, overarching themes in order to scape it and achieve apotheosis. All of that exists and sometimes intersects with Goblin Slayer's story, however it doesn't get much elaboration on because at the end of the day it's not gonna help him either deal with the problem at hand that's going unaddressed for far too long or make it so he becomes a more useful (in all aspects) man to the few people he cares about.
