Due to many requests, I take a look at the anime Goblin Slayer and how it depicts the monsters within its world and why you want your monsters monstrous, or in other words vile and dangerous, within a good fantasy setting, with some references to the Wheel of Time series.

Something that isn't addressed in the video: The fact that the goblins are so monstrous, and their monstrosity goes largely unaddressed by most adventurers, who consider goblins to be nuisances unworthy of their time, speaks to the disregard that the society has for the plight of the peasantry. Goblin Slayer is the *one hero* who treats goblins as a true threat.
@chrishubbard64
@chrishubbard64 3 жыл бұрын
Even then its less that they are treated as a nuisance by adventurers and more that they are too dangerous to fight for the reward offered. Virtually every adventurer has at least one goblin slaying quest under their belt before they rise up in ranks past the point where they can ignore those quests for "better" ones. They are fully aware that goblins are dangerous for their threat rating as they are swarming monsters. "A" goblin is nothing to even the weakest adventurers. Cowgirl could probably take down a single goblin with a chunk of firewood in hand. Even a handful are no big deal. But you rarely ever only fight a handful and thats where things get deadly. Remember, these guys mostly arent heroes, they are earning a living. They want to do quests, get paid, and maybe get famous. They arent going to take quests that have a high chance of death, and a low chance of reward if they dont have to. They are mercenaries.

Goblin Slayer has serious PTSD and likely has difficulty talking to and relating to other people because of it. The people around him are slowly getting him to open up more and relax from his hyper-vigilance but he's not there yet. He DOES want that connection if his actions helping other people out and talking to people who address him is anything to go by. But he has trouble initiating conversations and carrying on conversations beyond: "Goblins?" "Erk..." "Yes," "No," "I see," and "Is that so?"

When I first heard of Goblin Slayer it was purely for that opening scene where Priestess and her party get ambushed and annihilated, and I was right there with others thinking that it was horrible. Then I watched it... And realized just how little they showed and that the violence perpetrated by goblins, adventurers and Goblin Slayer himself, was so much more than the violation of the female body that was fleetingly shown. And as someone who has suffered abuse from men I really appreciate and enjoy the characters of Goblin Slayer's party because they're attempting to curb the violence towards others from goblins. I personally feel that that is part of the subtext that the author was going for but so many only look at things surface deep anymore. All in all Goblin Slayer is really a tragic, dark fantasy and the brutality is part of the tragedy.

Same here, as someone that got "fucked with" as a kid (I'll let your imagination take over) its almost empowering seeing Priestess get some sort of revenge. I remember seeing some retard say the reason they were raped was to motivate Goblin Slayer. These people can be so fuckin stupid uts insane
@Kos4Evr
@Kos4Evr 6 ай бұрын
Especially when you realize that goblin slayer's entire motivation is being the sole survivor of a goblin raid and his trauma of watching his sister being a victim of the goblins fuels his rage that leads him to destroy them. His only purpose is to destroy the things that took everything he cared about away from him. It left him dead inside. He can never be normal again. He can never feel love or give love. He can never be happy. Cow girl loves him but he can't reciprocate that. Guild girl and priestess genuinely care and worry about him. Everyone else looks at him like some kind of freak. At least until the dwarf, elf and lizardman find him. Even swordmaiden wishes that he would stay by her side and love her. He cannot reciprocate her feelings. His mind and his heart are broken beyond repair. Yet he manages to show sympathy for those who share his trauma. Also priestess with the help of guild girl, cow girl, dwarf elf and lizardman does bring a bit of his humanity back. She is the one working the hardest to heal him mentally and emotionally. She tries to bring back his humanity. She has a bit of success with that.

I feel the author did their job perfectly in the world building department. Imagine if this scene and information never came out? Would anyone want to read/watch about a guy murdering goblins? It'd be a lot of, "why is this psychopath torturing and murdering goblins for?" Instead, because of the barbarity of the goblins and their actions, by the end of 20 minutes when he finally shows up to work, we're hooked in all of the macabre ways he murders them for entire seasons. It's a powerful draw into something that could very easily have been obtuse and stupid from a classical stereotypical fantasy setting.

You know this video brings up another issue with cultural differences. The way I saw it Goblin Slayer did the world a solid by retelling and giving a new take on the "monster." While it can be seen that the goblins are horrifying monsters that do violent and unforgivable things but even how this video describes it isn't actually evil. The fact is this is how the goblins reproduce. They aren't doing it because they are "evil." It's their natural biology to be predatory and reproduce using another species. As the video described the manga could have had it where a litter of goblins is forced into a human woman and the woman provides both a womb and a first meal for the infant goblins once they are born. The reason we would find this to be "evil" is because we're the humans. From our "perspective the Jedi are evil" so to speak. I'd like to bring to everyone's attention the parasitic wasp. They actually do inject their eggs into a living caterpillar's body and the eggs gestate inside of its body before being born and eat the caterpillar from the inside out. Is the wasp evil? No this is just how evolution decided would be the best method for this wasp to produce young that would survive. So that's what I got from Goblin Slayer. Our main characters are humans so they have a personal hatred for the goblins based on how predatory the goblins are of humans. (which btw is mostly because of these mating raids and most adventurers don't even take goblins seriously.) But goblins are just instinctively following their natural life cycle. It's more the Goblin Slayer himself who could be seen as evil given his reason for killing goblins is out of revenge and hatred. We see this even in the first episode with him justifying the brutal murder of baby goblins.

@aikslf

@@maxverner2341 I think the point you're trying to make is that there is no absolute evil, it's just a matter of perspective. I still do believe that Goblin Slayer is doing the right thing by killing the goblins because they cause trouble for the human species. Humans also need their own females for reproduction, so if another species is trying to take them, they're natural competitors with humans and could be endangered. This also brings up another moral/ethical issue, which is whether humans are just animals like all other living things on Earth or are something beyond. Is there more to a human than the flesh that eats, breathes, drinks, sleeps, and mates to survive? Or is it just that, humans are flesh and nothing more? People's beliefs regarding this differ from religion to religion and culture to culture. We often see in fantasy that a certain character is supposed to be the hero from a universal perspective but said character is usually not so much of a hero from other people's perspective.

There are still some few survivors about missing limbs. There has been similar things in the South East Asian islands where Islamic extremists have been attacking and destroying Buddhist monasteries and the like and destroying Buddhist relics while murdering the locals mostly with blades. I'm pretty sure the women and children aren't sent off painlessly as well. That's the problem we have with much of the Western world today. They've lived this privileged life where they haven't had to worry about massive hordes of people to sweep in and have their way with them before killing them or pressing them into slavery. It's because of this that they've become removed from the plights of the rest of the world, while focusing on what most of the rest of the world would call trifling matters. The author of Goblin Slayer himself barely ever goes into actual detail about the rape done by goblins, often saying “Upon things which need not be recounted happened”. Given that the goblins are lustful creatures with procreational needs, it’s only natural that they do the things they do. It’s written in a very natural way, a way which elicits disgust by the reader, a way in which conveys the emotional and the physical impact it leaves upon the surviving victims. The author gives the topic the respect it is due, not taking the impact of it lightly. The anime and manga clearly take some artistic liberties which are easily avoided when writing, but harder to do so in animation and art while still conveying the absolute horror of the goblins.

I think you’ve touched upon something very interesting with the discussion between rape and being eaten alive, and the different reactions that each brings. I think the problem here is that when someone is eaten alive, it’s so over the top and grotesque that there’s a disconnect. You can’t easily imagine it happening outside of a fantasy story. Rape on the other hand, as you pointed out, is something that happens in the real world, so there’s more of a connection there, rather than being pure fantasy, it shows off a portion of reality that we’d rather ignore
@Tallorian
@Tallorian 2 жыл бұрын
I had exactly the same dispute a year ago with several north-americans on an anime-forum. I find it very disturbing and wrong that there's so much more outrage and censorship about sex/nudity/rape than about torture and killing (and especially mass-killing). Because the latter are obviously more anti-social and harmful types of behavior, as evidenced by the law and all human tradition. But they said exactly the same: "murders don't happen much around here, it's clearly bad, so nobody takes it seriously when seen on the screen, but rapes do happen, we know people who became victims of rape, so we are frustrated that it is shown or there are jokes about it, and that is why it is worse." Imho, this shows just how horribly twisted and hypocritic and self-centered is the mentality and thinking in the NA. I think Shad was right on the point here.

To be fair to Tolkien, he specifically runs into the explanation of the formation of orcs: these are heavily corrupted, deformed, elves. When it comes to the other forms of "orcish" creatures, Tolkien only makes allusions in regards to Uruk Hai: they are half orc, half human. It's implied that it's done through interbreeding. So, yeah, he doesn't run into details, but he does state the horrifying aspects of orcs. Also, man eating, plus cannibalism. Not a fun life, that of the orcs.

Orcs were originally corrupted from elves by Melkor, darkness be his name. Orcs are goblins and vice versa. They can breed sexually because there are off screen female orcs. However, in the movies and the Shadow of Mordor series they were commonly bred asexually through magic in a pit/vat thingy. Like the one that the Uruk-hai come from in TTT. Dead orcs were usually thrown back in to have their bodies fuel the next batch.

The thing about how Goblins in Goblin Slayer were made is really simple: Take the worse in humankind and apply them to the goblin. It's literally that in Goblin Slayer. • Stupidity: Goblins act in a stupid way unless directed otherwise. Their intelligence and chance of survival depends on the highest intelligent goblin in the group. This is similar to many instance on human's history. Group lead stupid people don't survive long. When an evil yet intelligent being appears, the worse of human appears (in example, Hitler and his officers and officials.) • Desires: Goblins act based on their leadership first, but their 2nd layer of decision is based on their desires and it's in a primal way. They want to eat, they do anything to eat, better equipment or just have sec, they steal, kills and kidnap especially to meet their desires. • Morals (lack of): Goblins are mostly creatures that lack any morals, but it's not due to a lack of understanding, but by pure evil choice. It's not like the case of a child who grew up with the wrong values, but actually that the goblin learn about morals and values, but only as tools to fulfill their desires. They will beg for their lives if cornered, but will attack as soon as a chance appears. (It's shown a lot more in the manga than the anime. The Goblin King's history is 3x more detailed in the manga than the anime. How he obtained his weapon and armors and how he gained his army is shown and explained. How he got defeated many times, but each time the decision of the one who defeated him allows him to reverse the situation and gain out of it. And even worse, the fact that he understand that he lost against Goblin Slayer's "army of heroes", but will restarts and do better next time.) In Goblin Slayer, the Goblins are exactly the kind of creatures that fits the Chaotic Evil mentality of the D&D genre. They are designed similarly to the typical (and unreal) trope of Vikings who burn villages, rapes woman and kills everyone on their path, but instead of having them move by sea, they move by the darkness and caves.

It's not really a trope, people did that back then and in some parts of the world still do, an example would be the Nanking massacre/rape that happened in world war 2, that's a very recent part of human history (less than a century) and shows the worst part of humans, it's like the people getting triggered by shitty goblins in anime forget that humans can and have done worse.

That some people get lucky & beat the first few weak challenges & get stronger until they can go off on the grand epic quests, but a good amount don't even survive the basics, like the party in the first episode of Goblin Slayer. It gives a good reason for why people have other jobs in a fantasy world other than, we need mundane characters to make the players feel even more incredible.

@SirConto 5 жыл бұрын
The author of goblin slayer really does manage to make the goblins really properly evil. It's one thing to make monsters that just want to kill everyone, and it's another to come up with the following chapter. It's in the novel only, it's sort of a side story that's there for world building purposes. It doesn't have much of a long term significance and I doubt either the manga or the anime will show it since they both went past it with the story a long time ago. I don't think I'm spoiling anything for anyone, so here goes: ___________________________________________________________________________________________ "After a feast that had lasted three days and three nights, the goblins were most satisfied. The remains of their prey littered the floor of what had once been an opulent hall, now defiled with excrement and stench and corpses. Before, they had made only one scrawny catch, but now they had four fresh prey. Four women, no less. Humans, of course, but also an elf and a rhea. The goblins were naturally elated about this, and their celebration was altogether without restraint-as if goblins ever showed restraint. The girls were wildly outnumbered by the goblins, encircled, then completely surrounded by them… What happened next hardly bears repeating. But these were not run-of-the-mill country girls. The exposed bodies, clothes brutally torn away, were each different, but all showed the effects of long training. Their skin was sunbaked, with scars that spoke of old wounds, and each time they were played with, hardened muscles were visible through a layer of supple fat. And in the corner of the room, thrust aside like so much garbage, was a pile of stolen armor and helmets, swords, and shields. These women were adventurers of the eighth rank, Steel-or rather, had been. Now, not one of them was breathing. How did this happen? That was the last thought to go through the mind of the noble daughter who had been the party’s leader. Had they been so wrong to take on this adventure, gripped by righteous indignation upon hearing about a village girl’s kidnapping and wanting to set her free? It wasn’t precisely pride that had led to their destruction. They had snuck in at noon, hoping to catch the goblins as they slept. The mountain fortress had been built of ancient trees by the elves, and it was a place unknown to the adventurers, a maze through which they had no guide. So they never let down their guard. They prepared as well as they could in the small village, knowing full well many goblins awaited them. They simply knew they had to rescue the girl. These were not fresh-faced beginners; they had been on a number of adventures and had a good deal of training and skill. In front, their armored leader held her weapon at the ready, and a rhea ranger watched the area like a hawk. Guarding their rear, an elven wizard was prepared with her spells, and a human monk prayed for miracles. They had kept in formation, stayed alert, and checked every inch of ground. They had made no mistakes. The cold, hard truth was they’d simply had bad luck. First, the fortress-as was common in such structures-was full of booby traps. The traps the elves had once set to fend off goblins now, ironically, served to keep the goblins safe. The exhaustion of their Ranger from searching out the elaborate, sensitive, and deadly traps played a large role in what happened. They had reached the inner sanctum of the fortress, and at the very end, Ranger missed a warning device. “Everyone, form up!” As an alarm echoed wildly, the party jumped to their places at their leader’s command. Wizard stood in the center, with their leader, Knight, and Ranger and Monk at three points around her. It was no substitute for a good, solid wall between them and the enemy, but it was a strong formation. But the goblins that surrounded them were so, so many. Call it, if you will, the tyranny of the majority. Ranger’s archery skill was a divine gift, but even she couldn’t hold out when there were more enemies than she had arrows. Wizard used four of her arts, five-a great number-but eventually, her strength gave out. Monk kept up her prayers for miracles and protection until she could pray no more, and she had nothing left. Their leader fought on, her blade covered in blood, but as she tired, the goblins overpowered her, and then the hunt was over. All those bodies-yet the fight could not have lasted a full hour. And there among the heaps of arrow-pierced, sword-maimed, spell-burned corpses, a celebration began. “Hr…hrrr…” The elf’s voice was strained with fear. “St-stay back… Stay back…!” The rhea’s face was hopeless. Monk prayed soundlessly, and their leader was biting her lip hard enough to draw blood. The goblins licked their lips as they stared down at their prey, who were huddling together and hugging themselves. The party’s third and final piece of bad luck was that their enemies were goblins. Normally, goblin captives are either eaten or forced to become breeding vessels, and some are occasionally left alone, saved for a rainy day. But this time was different. These adventurers had killed many of their brothers, and no one was in the mood to give them an easy end. Goblins lived by the law of survival, willing to sacrifice as many of their number as it took to win. So they did not grieve the deaths of their comrades. But anger and hatred at those deaths ran deep. “GARUUURU.” “GAUA.” The goblins were delighted to find wine among the provisions they had taken from the women. Their drunken, small, mean minds invented one awful game after another to play with their prisoners. And the village was just down the mountain-an easy place to get more toys if they ran through what they had here. The poor captured village girl had hardly served ten goblins before she could bear no more. They had used her up long ago. There was no hope. Knight, her clothes torn, a goblin holding her down, gave a howling scream. “You bastards! You want to humiliate someone? Start with me!” She was the daughter of a noble household. She had become a knight-errant in the service of the Supreme God, responsible for administering law and justice. She had contemplated every evil fate that might befall her and was ready for them. But she was not prepared to sacrifice her friends. First, Ranger was used for target practice before her eyes. The leader begged the goblins for her companion’s life. Because Monk had attempted to bite off her own tongue when the goblins torturously killed her, they shoved her comrade’s entrails into her mouth. When Wizard was burned alive, Knight’s heart broke into a thousand pieces, and her soul failed her. It was only after three days and three nights that the goblins at last granted the leader’s wish. What happened to her during those three days until her body, so mangled it barely looked human, was thrown into the river is not fit to be written. The body of the adventurer that washed down to them, and the cackling laughter that echoed through the valley, left the villagers at the mountain’s foot racked with fear." __________________________________________________________________________________

In japanese fantasy (namely manga, ln etc.), reproduction of humanoid monsters through rape of other humanoid females is actually very common, at least from my experience, so the author didn’t exactly reinvent the wheel here. "First day, they come and catch everyone. Second day, they beat us and eat some for meat. Third day, the men are all gnawed on again. Fourth day, we wait and fear for our fate. Fifth day, they return and it's another girl's turn. Sixth day, her screams we hear in our dreams. Seventh day, she grew as in her mouth they spew. Eighth day, we hated as she is violated. Ninth day, she grins and devours her kin. Now she does feast, as she's become the beast. Now you lay and wait, for their screams will haunt you in your dreams."

The entire series revolves around a title character who has dedicated his life to wiping these things out in the most efficient way possible with no mercy whatsoever. In order to justify this without making Goblin Slayer himself look like a villain, they have to be vile creatures by nature and a real threat. That way, when he takes on quests with the express purpose of slaughtering them including the children, he looks dedicated rather than looking like a kill happy butcher.

Wouldn't it have been quite an interesting turn of events if the show started with only the perspective of the goblin slayer himself. None of his backstory, or development of how monsterous the goblins actually are. As the reader/viewer you follow this character who is overly obsessed with killing goblins and no one who knows him really understands why and views goblins as a weak monster not even worth their time. As the story continues you are left asking why this guy is hell bent on genocide. Killing these creatures babies not thinking to ask what threat they could pose as all the other characters in the show just view the goblin slayer as a nut case. Then the sword maiden arc begins and we start to see the more adaptive side of the goblins. We start to see the more monstrous side and even come to understand the horrific nature of the creatures. The nature the goblin slayer has seen all along.
@oldhatAN
@oldhatAN 5 жыл бұрын
@@danieltrumble2974 This kind of character doesn't really work as a viewpoint character. He doesn't speak much so we would need to be privy to his internal monologue to follow what is happening. We would be in his head. That would remove any mystery from the character. Otherwise, it's just him silently doing things. That's why the priestess character is there. She serves as the audience's viewpoint. She asks questions so he needs to explain things to her (really us) that he would otherwise have no reason to explain or talk about. Goblin Slayer has to be kept at a certain distance from the audience to keep him mysterious and inscrutable but someone need to bridge that gap so we can connect with him as a character. That's what the priestess is for. She serves the same purpose as John Watson or The Doctor's companions.

crunch9876 I don’t think that’s really comparable. Goblins are inherently evil. There’s no “good” goblin, like there are good Muslims. There’s no potential for change. He even references why he kills the children, saying they grow up and become the next leader because they know how to adapt. They’re born with the instinct to kill and rape, it isn’t taught to them.
@dmkr88db

@ShaddowSabbathOn the contrary, the point of the show is to show us that goblins are believed to be the weakest, but that they can be the worst monster of them all. A perfect example of this, is how the first party dies horribly because they didn´t prepare for the occasion and thank that goblins where so weak that they didn´t need to do or prepare anything in order to win easily. All the deaths are do to the characters not knowing of goblins and their instints (the existance of the hobgoblin or the poison in their blade) or to the habitat of goblins and how to move there (the guy with the sword too long). The point of goblin slayer being able to easily kill all of them is due to his experience and knowledge of the goblins, do to basically become a silver rank adventurer on goblins alone. On the other hand, you have that any type of goblin are weaker that a dragon o a manticore, but some of them, such as champions or hobs could easily kill a human in a 1vs1 fight. So yes, they are the weakest in comparison to other monsters, but they are still strong enough to kill you easily. Also, yes you need an army in order to kill an army... a human can kill a normal goblin in a 1vs1 match, but killing 200 goblins by yourself is kinda of impossible, because you know, numbers made them strong. Also, take in account that it wasnt an army of normal goblins, it was a huge army of normal goblins with and elite of hobs and champions, that as we know, can kill you pretty easily. So, the show is consistent about its theme and avoids getting boring because they change the scenario (a cave, an ancient tower, a ship, etc, a literal battle, etc.), reduce the ways goblin slayer has to deal with them. (the elf make her promise that he can´t use some of the most efficient methods, so that makes him be creative) and change the goblins and its equipment (he start fight normal goblins without good armor or weapons, then he goes against different types of goblins, then the ogre, then the champions, etc.) To be fair I think the show is not as good as the manga, so try it... it is really good in my opinion...

In a way Goblins are wasps. Wasps aren't evil (too humans) but tell that to the creatures that they lay their eggs inside and are digested alive.
@Bacteriophagebs
@Bacteriophagebs 5 жыл бұрын
I will contend that wasps are, indeed, evil. When I was in Boy Scouts, I witnessed the evil of wasps on several occasions. One time, before swimming, I put my shoes under a tree. Numerous people walked past this tree, and I was able to stand there and take off my shoes without a problem. However, when I tried to retrieve my shoes after swimming, a wasp swooped in and stung the back of my shoulder. When I twisted around reflexively, another wasp stung the back of my other shoulder. They stung me like this five times, attacking from behind, before I could retrieve my shoes, and chased me over 50 feet, barefoot, on rocky ground, all while ignoring a dozen or so other people nearby. Now I ask you, if wasps aren't evil, why did they ignore me when I stood under their tree, untying my shoes and removing them, but attack me instantly when I tried to retrieve my footwear? Why did they ignore all the other people passing through their "threat zone," and only attack me? Why did they chase me, when I was well away from their nest and many other people were closer, even standing under that very tree for its shade? I came back later that evening and burned them alive in their nest, because, as Shad said, killing evil is a good thing. We want to destroy evil.

Just a little Easter egg I’ve noticed, may unintentional, but I think it’s somewhat interesting that goblins can reproduce with humans, meaning they are basically the same species as humans. Beard-Cutter, Orcbolg, Goblin Slayer (however you want to call him) acts that way due to the PTSD of witnessing his older sister being used and killed by goblins as he was hidden under the floorboards of their home. He suffers from severe PTSD and and as the series progresses you seem his humanity slowly awaken while interacting with his new friends he slays goblins with. There's nothing hammed up in that setup. The Mangaka and the anime creators researched heavily into PTSD so they could portray him accurately enough to the affect they were going for. if you really wanna know something wild about the series, it makes hundreds of D&D and LOTR references through out the series, "What's in my Pocket?" is used both as GS' training and a means of psyching himself up when he's about to do something beyond insane.

I thinks it's truly annoying and stupied that people would go so low as to attack an auother for his work in such a mannar, to blame a REAL LIFE person for a FICTIONAL STORY. and we can see it in Anime as well, the auther of MHA was slashed on twiiter for a simple cute drawing of the girls in his show in swimpsuit (cuse, summer) and people called him PEDOPHILE for it as it there is something wrong in drawing cute girls in swimsuit! we should really stop, as a sociaty to blame an auther for things that happen in their work.... it's just WRONG. Thus orcs being big and strong , but weirdly proportionate and with mangled teeth and such (signs of a genetic bottleneck). So, it is a disturbing reality that orcs in campaign, once outside the social hierarchy of their original birth burrows, will use force to obtain a viable breeding partner. That's how you get Uruks, the mules of the ork kingdom.

Goblins Slayer is super practical about his equipment, knowing exactly what he needs to do and use..and being completely unafraid to drop or throw his weapon to grab a new one even if it was previously used by the goblin he JUST killed..he also uses a small round metal round shield strapped to his arm for defense but leaving his hand free to hold a torch, backup weapon or to shoot a bow with..and the edge of the shield is also polished and sharpened so it can be a weapon as well...you DON'T want to be backhanded by Goblin Slayer's left hand. He also carries 4 throwing knives at all times, two in front and two in back..he also carries a shepherd's sling in his large back pouch along with some ammunition for it and can sling with such force he can kill goblins with it...and he has NO magic other than when he can get his hands on VERY rare magical scrolls which nobody knows how to make anymore..so they are expensive as hell for him to get.

@ShinKyuubi " shepherd's sling in his large back pouch along with some ammunition for it and can sling with such force he can kill goblins with it..." I get the impression you're undervaluing the power of the sling, historically slings were harder to use and less used then the bow but in no way should they be underestimated, there are roman medical accounts of sling bullets penetrating the skin and being fixed in bone, or in a joint between the ends of two bones. Sometimes river pebbles were used, other times purpose made clay ammunition or even lead bullets. I even seen 1 source who said Inca slings could kill a horse.
@MrBigCookieCrumble
@MrBigCookieCrumble 5 жыл бұрын
@@franciscomoutinho1 It could easily be argued that, depending on time and area, the sling was actually *more* prevalent than the bow. Simply for it's relative ease of production and cheapness. There are very famous greek slingers, not to mention it's prevalent use in the middle east.. actually scratch that - it's prevalent use world wide! Many herders use slings to this day (in certain countries) to defend their herds.

Slings are less accurate than bows, and have shorter range, but getting hit with a rock as big as your fist is gonna break bones. Some specialised slings were designed like trebuchets, and could be used to throw a rock as big as your head. You get hit by one of those at any decent velocity and you’re gonna have a bad day. And as for the little pellets, they might not have much stopping power, but they’d hurt like hell. Probably only kill if you hit the head, though.

I think the way goblin slayer handles this topic is very effective. It forces you to confront the horror, fills you with rage and bloodlust, and then satisfies that desire in the character of Goblin Slayer himself. When he first shows up, you HATE the goblins. You want to see them brutally crushed. He shows up with his glowing red eye and terminator- like attitude, and you instantly understand him, what he's here to do, and you can't help but back him up. You identify with him to the point that you wish it was you slaughtering these wretched things. It's incredibly effective story telling.
