The Gemini 4 Spacewalk -June 3rd 1965.. This footage was recorded from the movie camera Ed White installed on the outer hatch at the start of the EVA. There was no TV coverage of this event but the EVA was filmed by two cameras, the other one operated by Jim Mcdivitt from the Command Pilots seat.
Mcdivitt's footage includes his view of Ed pushing off the nose of the Gemini. That moment is also captured during this footage (if you watch carefully!).
I have edited the little bits of audio I have collected over the years and added it to the footage. Thus, the footage is not complete. Looking at the Gemini 4 flight transcripts will tell you there is more to find.
Also, the EVA was over 20 minutes long and the video footage for the EVA does not last more than 15 minutes (3 minutes of that is just Ed standing in the hatch). So there is audio that could be added but there might not be video for it to be added to.
I hope that this video in some way represents what happened that day in space. It was a momentous step and achievement and should always be remembered as such.
LM5.

It's nice to hear Ed White so elated and yet very professional at the same time. I watch this and I feel a little sad because we know what happened to him just a short time later.

I rather like to think how elated he was to experience something no human had ever accomplished before. I love how he was gently coaxed several times to come back in and finally sternly ordered inside. It must have been amazing.

Mission patch needs a bit of work, but aside from that, absolutely incredible. I find it so difficult to fathom. To be in a near total vacuum, less than inch away from certain death at all sides, floating in the void blacker-than-black of space, but also seeing the mammoth blue Earth, thousands of miles across, below you.

@@lunarmodule5 It's very strange to see that happening, because it makes one realize that if White did not have that "umbilical cord" tying him to the Gemini, the same thing would happen to him, right? Moving one's arms and legs does not move you in any direction if you are floating in space, and if anything, the only thing it will do is throw you into an uncontrollable spin, is that right?
@aaronblack9957
@aaronblack9957 5 жыл бұрын
ondine hd correct because there is no gravity to slow you down so there is no resistance to stop so you will spin forever or if you manage to get out the spin some how. Great question though.

The tv networks always made sure they were there to cover every space first live. Why is there no extended live coverage of Ed White's space walk? Yeah I know they couldn't do live video of the walk like they can today. But at least the tv networks could be on the air and showing simulations and talking about it as it all happened. Where is that live coverage?

Around 4:50 when he comes back in, you see him reach out to grab the door and miss. That's the start of his difficulties. I don't think the video and audio are in sync. At the end of the video you see him literally 'climbing' up the umbilical to reach the door.

Daily, yes there is still gravity everywhere, but when an object is in earth's orbit, it will appear to be weightless due to the 'free fall' you mentioned earlier. But your response to Walter didn't actually explain why the belt is moving as much as it was.
@ChrisCooper312
@ChrisCooper312 5 жыл бұрын
In what situation would you expect it to move like it does, other than in a weightless vacuum environment? If it was in the atmopshere, then the belt would be flying back in one direction, away from the direction of travel, assuming the capsule was moving. If it was in an enclosed, weightless environment like a "vomit comet", then it's unlikely that there would be enough air movement to make it move as violently as it does. If it was some form of animation, why would they even have it there, and why would they not make it move more "realistically" or be rigid?

The camera seems to be rocking in time with a heart beat as if it's being held. Why is the image rocking? Also I notice the direction of travel is changing. If you dip in at different times sometimes they're moving one way over the Earth, dip in somewhere else and they're moving in a different direction. Don't worry, I don't believe it's all a hoax, just puzzled.
@eventcone
@eventcone Жыл бұрын
The direction of travel is unchanged - it's the spacecraft attitude relative to the direction of travel that changes.

@thejonathan130

Nowadays the EVA suits are practically little ships built to be used to wear for hours at a time. The one Ed White is wearing was just designed to do an EVA for a few minutes. He doesn't have life support, tools, and other stuff strapped to him because that wasn't what he was out in space for. (He's getting the air from the umbilical cord)
