Looks good. I was thinking of that same soup for camping but was turned off by the simmer time, and of course you proved me wrong. Great idea adding the smoked ham. Thanks.

It turned out pretty good. If you have a fire, the simmer time is ok. But I agree if you're using a alcohol stove, its not so good. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Good one my friend. Nothing better than coffee and vittles in the great outdoors. Good call on the blaze orange, it is hunting season after all and they shoot first and ask questions later in Ocala lol...

Yeah. I figured the orange was a good idea. I hear that being shot smarts quite a bit! I don't want to experience that! Thanks for watching another one!

Since the US didn't use bread bags (not counting the early haversacks), have you used a M1936, M1956, M1961 or any nylon butt pack as a shoulder bag? Or any of the canvas US gas mask bags?
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS 5 жыл бұрын
gijr2003 No I haven’t. I have come close to buying a US gas mask bag before but I didn’t pull he trigger. Never thought about using a US butt pack as a shoulder bag. Might be a good thing to try. We will see. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Really enjoyed this video. Love the east German kit and couldn't help notice the carry bag you had it in. Looked like a perfect fit. You got any information about it? ATB Robert.

BluegrassBushcraft That little bag saves so much mess from getting inside my pack and it’s very cheap. It’s called the Russian child’s gas mask bag. There is a couple different versions I have seen but both can be modified for mess kit use. I found them on eBay here: rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F253109228254

John, of all the surplus kits you own, which ones do you consider your favorite to use? I realize it may depend on what you are going to cook but surely there is a favorite. Also, where do you obtain some of the more rare kits such as the German Arctic canteen and the Russian paratrooper kit? Thanks,Kevin
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS 6 жыл бұрын
kevin ruyle It does depend on what I’m cooking. If I’m making some sort of soup or stew, I prefer the East German kit because of the third cup with its own handle. I also like my Swedish kit because of the all in one setup (stove, windscreen, etc). But it is heavier so I bought another Swedish windscreen and modified it to work with the East German kit. If I’m doing some frying, I like the USGI mess kit paired with the US canteen cup system for heating water for coffee, oatmeal, etc. Another kit I like is the Czech Army mess kit. The two pots with the small lid/plate is nice for making rice dishes or stuff like sautéing sausage, peppers, and onions. I keep an extra one of these kits in my wife’s emergency kit in her car. I hope this answers your question. Because of my large collection, I have a lot of variety of kits to choose from. But these are the surplus kits I like the most. Thanks for your question and for watching my videos!

@@John-Sherwood-W4JFS I recently purchased a German canteen mess kit era 1960's. A 3 piece kit with strap. I wish it nested a little better, but I really like the design with the contained water bottle. I had to replace the gasket in the cap because of age. I wish I had more information, however it appears to be hard to find. If you have one of these, please do a video on it. If you already have tell me how to retrieve it.I do enjoy your videos very much. I've recently subscribed to your channel and have a lot of catching up to do. Thanks so much for responding

If it is the West German canteen set you have, then I have one. Mine is green with a cup with a folding handle on top of the canteen. The canteen sits inside a lower container. A strap is attached to the lower container and goes around the top of the cup to hold it all together. I don’t have a video on that one yet. I will try to get one together soon for you.

I have a few kits of my own... is there any where particular you shop for so many different kits? Or just Ebay?

Daniel Romero Mostly eBay. I have picked up some on keepshooting.com and Hessen Antique but it seems the canteen and mess kit supply has dried up a lot on those two sites for now. For a great kit reference site for collectors, check out on Facebook the blog page called Army Water Bottles and Mess Kits Collection. He does a lot of research on the history of different kits and posts great pictures of them. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

Cool. Its a good spot for that. It has changed a lot since I was there last. I never stayed there. At the time I preferred Lake Delancy because it is more shaded.
