The Science Museum of Virginia is currently closed to the public so we're taking our popular Lunch Break Science series, sponsored by Bon Secours, online!
On June, 24, 2020, David Spears, PG, State Geologist, Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy, presented “Gold in Virginia.”
Thirty years before the California gold rush, Virginia experienced a gold rush of its own. After an 1804 gold discovery in Spotsylvania County, mining rapidly expanded along a northeast-southwest belt that extended all the way from Fairfax to Appomattox. By 1830, Virginia was producing more gold than any other state in the U.S. In this presentation, State Geologist David Spears will review the history of gold exploration and mining in Virginia, from the Jamestown settlers to today's one-man gold mine in Goochland County.
