Definitely one of the most informative salmon fishing videos on KZbin. Full of great information. He's teaching literally the entire show. Very well done.

Tyee’s are great for Great Lakes fishing. The higher gunnel is awesome for when it gets choppy on the big water. Less chance of being tossed over the side: I’m using Scotty strikers for dipsy rods also. I use solar green on my rigger rods for the same reason you run the hi vis yellow. Easy to see the line. I wish I could afford a new tyee but I’ll have to make due with my 5.5 18’ tyee with a 7’4” beam. She’s old but still fishes well and in great shape. Lund actually used my boat on there fb page in a tyee post. I ditched the snubbers on my dipsy rods and just run a mono leader. Lost a lot of fish with the snubbers haven’t lost one since I went away from them. I use a merc 9.9 as my pusher with a minn Kota bow Mount w/Pronav angler I can set a vector heading lock on a navionics map on my phone and never have to steer the boat. I am using a fish hawk x2. Looks like we are setup similar I’m just running the poor mans version lol

In response to your comments about downrigger rod positioning: it depends on the rod! For downriggers, we’re using a 9 ft., 2 pc., Ugly Stik Downrigger rod, and combined with a release system similar to yours, we set the rods high, but cranked down into a big “C”. We are able to do this because instead of a pad type release, we just have a large hook (point filed off) at the end of a 3 ft cable running from the back of the rigger ball. A #10 rubber band is wrapped around the rod’s line (after setting back the bait the proper distance), and both ends are placed over the hook. The line is then carefully set, taking care not to allow it to cross into the hook, and the ball and bait is lowered to the desired depth under tension with the rod and reel drag. Once the bait is set to the proper depth, the reel with the drag set, is cranked down until tight to the rubber band putting a big “C” in the rod. When the fish strikes, hard or soft, this is transmitted directly to the rod tip and even in a “soft bite”, you can get to the rod, lift it hard, and break the rubber band simultaneously setting the hook and keeping you instantly tight to the fish. This system is very consistent, although is does require a little more effort and attention to detail when setting downrigger lines. Some fishermen who use this system take it a step further and run 50# braid on their rigger rods, rather than monofilament. This allows for running downrigger baits way back in the Fall when targeting boat shy staging kings near river mouths.....

Excellent video, lots of great info - I thought the kicker/troller motor was our secret weapon, and here you talk about it like it's common knowledge :)

Nice catches. I would like to eat one of these fish and compare it to the wild Chinook we catch here in California in the Pacific. The feed is very different and so is the salinity.

Great explanation on different presentations.....thanks for that.....wondering what leads do you run behind the release clip? Do they differ with lures to flies? Also does the lead differ with depth? Thanks for the video very informative......greg

g Lubberdink good rule of thumb is the 100’ rule on downriggers. If you are running 40’ deep you use a 60’ lead. If you are running 80’ deep you use a 20’ lead and so on. How clear the Great Lakes have become and how fish have become downrigger shy I’ve as long as 120’ leads off the ball to avoid the ball spooking fish. Lake trout it seems close to the ball is better 15-20’ only off the ball.

When trolling with the kicker motor, what speed do run your electric bow motor on to remotely steer the boat?

I see you got no reply to this - run your electric at lowest setting to save battery, use kicker to get your thrust. If the electric is having a hard time steering into wind/current, just slightly increase the juice until it is able to steer again.

I run Pronav angler on my minnkota with the vector heading lock feature. Calm days 28% thrust keeps my tyee on a dead straight vector. Windy or lots of current on Lake Michigan I have to dial it up to 42%
