When facing 'rangach' from the main house the first son's 'simba' is on the right, the same side as the father's bedroom. The 'simba', if it has two rooms, has the bedroom on the left when facing 'rangach'. So generally in a luo (Kenya) homestead set up, bedrooms as usually on the right when you are leaving the house.

Excellent interview . For future posterity it is time to work for a long term plan to create Luo-language, history, music, culture ,museum etc and economic/business/agribusiness/technology/film centers. This can be done in all the regions occupied by Luo starting with Tororo/Pakwach and Kisumu . This can be done by creating a history, anthropological and language university in all the regions and libraries . THIS CAN HELP FOSTER UNITY THROUGH KNOWELDGE,SELF AWARENESS AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT . The Universities can then have spaces such as indoor or outdoor amphitheaters to host LUO FESTIVALS also .

Kenya VP Oginga Odinga started Luo Thrift to empower Luo economically and worked closely with President Milton Obote in Uganda . Milton Obote was a regular visitor of Oginga Odinga in Kisumu and Oginga Odinga travelled extensively with his family to Kampala ,Entebbe, Pakwach, Tororo, Agoro ,Lira, Gulu, Jinja, Labongo etc in efforts to unite Luo through Luo Union and Luo thrift . Younger populations can then learn the language and history and culture while also taking course work in economic and business due to modern requirements of survival through entrepreneurship . There is enough knowledge to create fully fledged universities that will be the custodian of Luo in modern times . This is similar to what other groups have done such as the Chinese, English, Arabs, Japanese, French etc . It is common to find a French school or Chinese Institute etc .To fulfil this you can partner with members of the community with resources who can invest in such a ventures in various regions .

@@johnmark570 yes you are right. Actually unless I'm mistaken the Angal and Juganda chiefdoms are wholly in Congo. War Palara is the one that spills into Uganda with Erussi forming part of Padyere but their real allegiance being with the chief of War-Palara. Of course taking into account the fact that all the Alur were in Congo till west nile was added to Uganda, and part of Acoli given to Sudan in 1914 Furthermore Angal is the one that gave birth to the chiefdoms of Mukambo, Ruvinga, JUpio, and some of the other chiefdoms in Congo. Atyak/Okoro gave birth to the now Okoro chiefdom, Paidha, Padea and others in Uganda, and to the Panduru, War, Palara and others in Congo as well. All in all the Alur both sides of the border can be generally divided into the Atyak group and the Ucibu groups as the largest, then to a smaller extent, the pa Kwonga and Ragem (Jonam) groups. According to legend, Atyak are directly from Nyipir, Ucibu from Thiful, pa Kwonga are for Kwonga and Ragem are for Daca/Dhasa. But all crossed the Nile after the matters between Nyipir and nyabongo at wang-lei, and all are Alur.

I am Mzee Wandera Salmon Owino. I would like to clarify the flollowing. 1.That the Luo of DR Congo are descended from the twin brother of Nyipir snd Nyabongo called Thiful. They were triplets. The Nyiganda and Angal are true descendants of Thiful. Other groups like Panduru a.nd Jokoth migrated from Uganda. 2. Disagreement among the ancient Nuer while in Egypt caused the separation of the groups that later became the Shilluk and Dknka.Tge current Nuer wre groups thst remained i South Sudan as the royal kkngdom with the royal spear-head was .movng southwsrds in fesr of the marauding moskem Arabs. 3. It is the Acholi and most of the Jonam who have shkfted from the original vocals as they omit prinouncing 'th' in the word nyathi and 'dh' in the word dhyang but the Alur, Jopadhola, Joluo of Kenya, the Acholi Labwor pronounce them properly. The inluence of Madi and Lugbara affected them..

Nuba are not Luo in origin. Nubia is located between the upper part of Sudan and the lower part of Egypt. The Luos lived in that place especially in Aswan as ancient Nuer with other tribes that included the Nuba. When they left that place the people who remained there includdind the Nuba were concured, arabised, islamized.. Nubians now are a group of people who are moslems and speak a language mixed with Arabic and other languages. The Nubians in Ugandais a combination of Acholi of Sudan, some Alur and other tribes of Sudan.

@@johnmark570 thank you. Does nubia have a meaning? I've seen communities trace origin to around this place. Could it be a term used for all communities that converged here? I like the description of nubians of UG. Is it possible communities which were escaping attacks converged there? On checking the geography, it's located just below the first cataract.. means they were immune to attack from north (cataract is unnavigable part of river). So far, that's the most probable conclusion. Also it's possible were joining Islam to blend in/stay around? 🤷🏾‍♂️ So far the closest I've come to nubia is 'junubia' in Arabic which means 'southern' I don't speak Arabic🤣. Also don't forget this was an area that had received attacks before from Romans, Greeks etc. Possibly attacks from Europe came along river.. So this was safe haven for the majority

Interestingly, when he speaks Luo he doesn't have a Ugandan accent but only when he speaks English. The natural shift is amazing. Nevertheless, an Ja Kagwa mar Piny Tanganyika, I don't think the scholar has enough information about the Luo of Kenya and Tanzania. The little he has said about the Luo of Tanzania has some misinformation that he seems not to understand especially on the Kavirondo part. I do not think we are indigenous of Ethiopia though. Greetings!!

Hahahaha it's because his Luo is original with almost zero outside influence while Ugandan English is heavily influenced by the dominant luganda language. Just like Kenyan English is influenced by swahili.

Don’t make me say about my Tanzania English. Anyway, thanks you for doing this. Honestly I watched your video in almost every Luo nation and it feels like I have travelled with you to all those places but it gives me an huge assignment to think about what do we do to honour our Luo ancestors who journey and soldier up to make us to be where we are today?

The migration story of the Luo of Tanzania written by scholars of early Luo history lacked clarity of their first ancestors and the dating of major events in their movenents and settlement. If you ask a Luo of Kenga or Tanzania who their ancestors is they are not sure. The Kenyan brothers and sisters will tell you Ramogi. If you ask them furthet who Ramogi was you may not get the answer. Ramogi is Owiny, the elder brother of Kadhirondi who evenrually settled in Northern Tanzania. This is a resaerched piece of work. I have reserved the details.

Then why do Ugandans including the Luos speak in a manner that's unclear, convoluted and close to pidgin despite attaining university education?

some people were educated in Bantu areas learnt Bantu languages and cannot speak Luo well. To some extent there is some loss of dialect

The oriiginal Luo dialect is close to Jopadhola, Alur and the Ugenya Luo of Kenya. The major changes have been due to influences of the neighbours and intermarriages.

@@johnmark570 there were two or 3 categories of Luo dialects at the advent of the Luo migration.: 1. Those that could be grouped with the Pari 2. Those that could be grouped with Luo bahrel Ghazel Those following the Pari group in terms of accent and pronunciations include Belanda Bor ,Alur, Padhola, Luo (Kenya, Tanzania). Those following Luo Bahr el Ghazel in terms of pronunciation and accent includes collo, Anyuak Acoli The labwor language of north eastern Uganda is the most conservative of Luo dialects in East Africa. It is the most similar to the original Luo in grammar as well as vocabulary. Labwor has preserved the original Luo grammar as well as plural forms

@@gertrudeathieno398 yes , labwor maintained a Conservative Luo language, but also added a little karamojong in it . It would have been beneficial for them to be interviewed
