Today I was diagnosed with lupus after a week of testing. I was trying to understand why I’m unnaturally sensitive to sunlight and what triggers my Renaud’s when I came across videos linking lupus to Renaud’s. Thank you prof. Your video is very informative.

Dr. Rudnicka, it is such a shame that we do not have your level of expertise in Australia. I cannot find a dermatologist willing to investigate whether or not my hair loss issues are lupus related.

I am Virginia scherer, I have .lupus. hair loss. Big patch bald and thinning on head. I got covid shots last year and it sent my lupus into rage. I have lupus problems. My kidneys are fai.ing. my heart beats are off. My joints hurt especially my wrist thump joint. Anxiety, depression, sensitive to sunlight. Too many problems. Weakness, tired. I have too many things going on. Good to see other people talk about it. I think I've had it at least 40 or more years. I am 75 years old now.

This happened to me. After I got the shot all of these symptoms started to happen to me. My test stated I have lupus but im still in the testing phase.

I'd caution others with positive ANAs against using minoxidil. It just made me hair fall out like CRAZY. Zero regrowth.

I found your video very informative. I had a quick question regarding a point you made. I'm hoping you could provide further commentary. You mentioned if you don't treat the SLE, your hair will not re-grown with other topical treatments. Is this correct? My lupus flare ups are sporadic so I haven't chosen to start a medical protocol. Thanks in advance for your response.

As a person with SLE you may also have every other cause of hair loss, some of the being self-limitting. If you have no signs of a lupus flair then of course it is correct to not treat it

I have just been diagnosed with Discoid Lupus I am using vitamins in hopes of bringing down the inflammation in my body but I wish that I could get an answer as to how I can rest my body so it stops attacking my scalp.

Seeing a doctor and treating lupus is most important. Vitamins do not help.

Scareing alopecia in SLE is associated with DLE and the treatment may be different compared to SLE

Dr. I was diagnosed with DLE and I've been taking hydroxy chloroquine for over 10 months. Ive also been on triamcinolone acetonide injections. My hair started growing back healthier but a few weeks ago it started falling out and thinning. Im very scared i do not want it to go back to what it was. I do not think ill be able to survive it.

Lupus often starts at the age of about 14 years. With good treatment and a little luck you should be doing very well also in 50 years and much more. Be well and keep safe!

Do you always ask for blood test (ANA) to exclude lupus? Because of the false positive sometimes I don’t ask for ANA if the pacient doesn’t have another sign. Do you think I should ask always? Thank you from Brazil! ❤️🙏🏻🥰

Thank you for your question. No, not always, but I have it in my regular blood test list for hair loss with no obvious reason. If It’s positive with no other sign of lupus I say „2% of the healthy population have positive ANA”. But I keep it in mind for my increased alertnes for future symptoms. Some doctors say I have it and the rheumatologist says I do not. I have skin rashes and massive hair loss and grey hair since in 20s. A hair that grew on my cheek that I always get has suddenly turned grey. Im confused because my ANA is positive but rheumatologist says I do not have it. So now I will see a endocrinologist. I wish somebody does something...my hair is just going away 😢

ANA alone are not diagnostic. 2% of healthy persons may have positive ANA. For lupus there are clear criteria. In most difficult situations some criteria may be fulfilled, but not sufficient to make the diagnosis ….

@@profLidiaRudnicka Thank you. I appreciate your response. That's what the rheumatologist said, which is why she would not diagnosed me with it and seems to be for certain that I do not have it. With the information I have provided to you about the hair falling out in the skin rashes, also my eyelids swollen up one point but they've gone down now. I'm just wondering what could this be indicative of?

But what if you have a negative a, n, a, butt a positive double strandean a test. I cannot get a definitive diagnosis.. what tests other than the a and a will help? My God tells me.I have lopez because my hair looks like it went through a paper shredder

anti-dsDNA antibodies are a subtype of ANA. If the first one is positive and the second one is negative, it means that one of them is not true, either false-positive (dsDNA) or false negative (ANA)

Thank you. Topical steroids may be beneficial. Theoretically, they do not penetrate deep, but I have seen some improvement.

is it common to experience shedding of the cuticle and breakage in only certain areas of the scalp? I have a client whose hair breaks off after only an inch of growth and trichosopy shows cuticle shedding and breakage on the ends but only on the left side of head

Yes this is possible in congenital and acquired diseases associated with hair shaft fragility, but not in lupus

The idea is that patients (and maybe some doctors) may think that hair loss is just an esthetic problem and use topical minoxidil without investigating the cause of hair loss. In every patient with hair loss it is important to rule out severe diseases, including lupus, which may be the cause of hair loss because it is dangerous to leave them undiagnosed and untreated .

If this is hair loss associated with SLE, it will improve after few months og immunosupresive treatment of SLE. However, it may also have a different cause. It requires dermatological differential diagnosis.
