Catching coho salmon when river is low and clear can be tough, but not impossible. In this episode I cast and retrieve spoons and spinners for Chilliwack River coho salmon before rain arrives this fall!

Why are you casting right handed and then swapping to your left to retrieve? Surely just swap the reel handle around?

Great video Rod. Coho fishing has been tough for bank fishermen in Oregon this season. It is nice to hear your tips for low, clear water conditions.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
This particular river system is low but remains high enough so tha fish are still pushing through. The low and clear conditions definitely make them behave quite differently to a normal year, so we have to adapt when targeting them. I'm used to catching coho salmon in pretty shallow waters, but this is the first time we are finding fish in sometimes 2 feet of water where they'd still bite.

If you are ever out in whatcom County, Ferndale area. The coho salmon are still very right and chrome this way and spinners are what they're going after, it's a hit and miss with twitching Jigs. We are in dire need of some rain though all the river systems this way are hurting for some water it's making it hard for the fish to want to bite at all.

Hey Rod I remember you said you use an Albright knot for your leader, but I have recently learned how to tie an FG knot and I totally swear by it now - you should check it out. It takes some practice and good dexterity to do it properly and cinch it down tight enough, but the end result is amazing. It's so low profile it flies through guides like it's not even there, and it even slides through the guide on my level wind reel no problem. Now I'm using longer leaders for this kind of river fishing even though the fish aren't exactly line shy, I find the little bit of extra stretch provides a great buffer for the hard fighting fish. Just like all fishing knowledge, there's a bajillion how to tutorial videos here on KZbin, and seems there's about half a dozen good ways to tie the FG. I am a total convert and will evangelize the awesomeness of the FG everywhere I go!

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 ай бұрын
I'm sure they would, but not sure why you would use them as a replacement of spoons as they already work so well. Tasmanian Devils were originally designed as freshwater trolling lures used in lakes. They don't really cast that well to begin with. It's just funny that I started using them over 30 years ago and there suddenly was a hype on them during this year's pink salmon season. My guess is that TD's would not swim as well as spoons like Prime Lures in the flowing water.

Great fishing Rod ! Question , is the Vedder classified water ? I've never been to the island and mostly fish zone 6 . Most rivers there are class one or two . It can get pretty pricey since I live in Alberta . Been fishing BC since the seventies and seen the salmon fishing opportunities disappear lately. Between fish farm and climate change the future looks uncertain . You are right about coho loving spinners , my son makes all the ones we use . Hammerd Colorado are the best in silver . Good luck bud .

Hey Rod, congrats on all the catches!! Just caught my very first coho last week on a spinner!!! 😀 I am going to try a spoon next time I go out as well. 2 questions if you dont mind from a novice. Have you ever tried fishing for coho with a kastmaster and if so any luck? And second, do you use scent and if so, what would you recommend?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Thanks John. I have used a Kastmaster before, but not for this fishery. I used to use them for various saltwater fisheries. They probably would work. I don't add scent to my lures, in my opinion it's not really necessary. Take today for example, I was out briefly this afternoon and first cast resulted in a very good fish, hatchery coho salmon around 8 or 9lb. Third cast hooked up another one that was just as nice but popped off the hook. The key is to look for fish that have not been disturbed for a long period of time. They will almost always go for anything moving in those scenarios.

Rod, are these coho actually spawning where you're fishing, or is this well before they begin to pair up and dig redds?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
James, there are two components of the Chilliwack River coho salmon stocks - Hatchery and wild fish. The section of the river which is open to sport fishing is not where coho salmon spawn. Hatchery adult coho salmon travel through this section and end up at the hatchery which is just above the upper fishing boundary. The hatchery collects a small percentage of these fish and use them to meet their brood target, and the rest of these fish are in fact transported to the fish processor. They do not contribute to the recruitment of the population. Wild coho salmon, primarily spawn in the off channels in the upper watershed, which is much further upstream. Some fish also travel into Chilliwack Lake and spawn in the creeks which feed into the lake. This fishery has very little impact on the overall population, and is in fact a very sustainable fishery in comparison to other fisheries across this province. Known as the terminal fishery, it allows anglers to target fish stocks that are sustainable. On the other hand, mixed stock fisheries that take place in the Fraser River or the ocean, have the possibility to intercept stocks of concern beside targeting sustainable stocks, so the impact/footprint is a lot bigger.

Thats how it's done with the baitcaster reels , everybody does it. so when you switch to spinning its hard to kick the habit. I learned fishing with the spinning reel so I have a hard time with the baitcaster retrieve style that all bc anglers use . I get a lot of punishment 🤣

In california it's illegal to fish cohos but good luck even finding one. I grew up on chinooks and steelhead and man are they a blast and delicious. Have yet to catch a coho but sure would love to someday. Currently stuck in texas where no salmonids exist(except for shitty little planter rainbows in winter) when I have the money to get out of this flat,hot,mountainless shithole I'm going to Oregon or maybe Washington where there's real trees and real fish

switching from a clarus to a g.loomis is quite the price change lol. Any reason for the different rod choices? Which one do you like better?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Yeah the price point jumps up quite a bit lol, you're basically paying for a better experience. I definitely like the G.Loomis rod. It's just lighter to use, the blank has better response, etc. Don't get me wrong though, the Clarus rod is fantastic too and you'd catch just as many fish with it as the G.Loomis. In this video, I started out by using the Clarus rod which is rated 8-12lb, because there were chinook salmon mixed in with the coho. In the second half, I switched to the G.Loomis E6X rated 6 to 10lb, a much lighter rod because pretty much all of the fish I was targeting in the run were coho salmon.

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod Жыл бұрын
Jason, historically there has always been a coho salmon fishery in the Fraser River throughout October. In fact, if you look through some of our older videos (from 2011, etc), you'll find me catching some really large coho salmon around Steveston. That fishery is no longer available, for awhile anyway. The river is now closed throughout October each year to protect a couple of vulnerable steelhead runs which migrate through the Fraser at the same time with coho salmon. The river will reopen up around early November for coho salmon fishing, the date changes slightly each year, you'd be able to find the announcement of the opening on my Facebook page. It's usually posted up when it opens.
