I heard most school districts are now implementing security cameras in every classroom to combat false SA allegations by students who don't like their teachers. Kids are hell and don't understand the repercussions of their actions.

High school teacher here. 😊 There are schools that don’t allow cell phones, but most still do. As a teacher, it’s impossible to combat them. Statistically phones have been proven to impact student learning immensely. It also leads to a whole other host of problems like kids texting to meet up to fight, to film fights, to meet up to smoke weed, etc. Schools try to ban them, but surprisingly parents are the biggest hurdle in getting bans to go through. As for the hat issue, hats are another security issue. Many schools (high schools at least) are equipped with cameras. It is hard to identify people when they have hats or hoods on. For reference, I work at a high school celebrating its 100th year and has a student body of about 3,300.

No backpack day is essentially like a senior day where you bring anything but a backpack to hold your stuff. A lot of people tried to bring their little siblings, shopping carts, unplugged microwaves, anything you can think of besides a backpack.

AFAIK the no backpack thing started as some place banning them to discourage "gang activity" or make it harder to hide weapons, so the kids just went "alright" and brought the worst possible containers instead as a protest.

The high school district I went to started a no bag week for the last week of school because one year the seniors did a senior prank were they filled water balloons with bleach and then at lunch had a big water balloon fight. That first day of school video hurts me. I remember taking my daughter to daycare, and one family didn't even get out of their car. They were just yelling for their daughter to go up to the door, and when she got to the door... not even inside yet, they drove off. I feel so bad for kids who are sad or scared, but more so when their own family does not seem to care.

My daughter was miserable her first day. I went in and talked to her to try to calm her down. Eventually another student calmed her down and she seemed fine. Next day another meltdown. And every single day after that. She never got over it. We even put her in therapy for it. She was home a year in 3rd grade for covid. By fourth grade when she still cried every day we finally decided it was never going to go away and started homeschooling. (She did not have a bully or anything like that, she was just overwhelmed by all the noise and all the people. (No autism according to doctors and therapists, just anxiety.)

It used to be considered improper to wear a hat inside. "According to the etiquette experts over at the Emily Post Institute, the act of removing your hat indoors is a longtime sign of respect. In fact, it probably began with medieval knights. The Institute writes that back in Medieval Europe, any knight who failed to remove his helmet or lift his visor to identify himself could face fatal consequences."

In a lot of circles, it still is considered improper or impolite to wear a hat indoors. Additionally, in the military you're taught to remove your cover (hat) indoors (unless certain conditions exist). But hey, it's [current year], so rules, and tradition, and really any kind of politeness, decorum, propriety and tradition don't matter because they're "outdated", or whatever stupid-ass argument people make these days, to justify being degenerate scumbags..

As far as the video at 3:50 with all the paper being thrown. I went to High School near Seattle in the late 2000s and early 2010s before Tik Tok, (I still had a Myspace most of HS), my school actually allowed this for Seniors on the last day (seniors finished like a week before the rest of the school). I had a school of around 1,400 students, senior class was multiple hundred. They would bring extra janitors in that day, and at the end of all the classes hundreds of notebooks binders and books are thrown from all the seniors across the school (primarily near the cafeteria) and music would play and everyone would say goodbye. It was an absolute MESS but in MY case we were actually allowed to do it and it was kind of a right of passage to say goodbye. I remember wading through almost waist high paper and books and taking my last photos with friends with papers flying in the background. It definitely changes things and sucks if the school doesn't prepare for the staff to clean, however it was definitely a strong, wonderful core memory of ours in my case.

My freshman year they were allowed, but some people wore one with an offensive image, and refused to take it off as they felt it wasn't offensive, and ruined it for everyone. Some teachers have lax classroom management. They are dealt with by the superintendent. My school district implemented these rules this year. They relaxed the rules during Covid and now they’ve tightened them up. Students and parents were freaking out about it. We had a community hearing over it. Lots of disgruntled parents. Well they have to deal with it. Or go to a different school district.

My grandad was very strict with no hats indoors for religious reasons. I had a classmate who would constantly tap his pen on the bill of his cap so he couldn't have it on because he was distracting the rest of the class with the noise.

The “no backpack day” is probably part if ‘spirit week’ type tradition that is usually held the week of homecoming. Generally, the days are themed for the entire week, more commonly less creative days like, messy hair day, pajama day, spirit day (wearing school colors/swag) etc. this school must have a way more supportive administration/staff that allows the students to have a genuine creative and interesting theme ideas.

I graduated in 1997. Every year we had spirit week. Everyday was a different theme like pajama day, costume day, sports day, ect...and Friday was always a school color day with a school ralley usually for spring sports homecoming. Baseball, Softball, Track and field, Swimming, Golf, Wrestling etc. Fall Homecoming was for Football and Winter Homecoming was for Basketball and Soccer.

1:28 My high school had an epidemic of kids pulling the fire alarm in the mid 00's. It would happen several times a day during its peak. The student body got to the point where we just ignored it when it happened. But the situation got so bad, they had to install dye packs on the fire alarms, so kids would get marked if they set it off. The local fire department was NOT happy with us.

My kiddo is in Elementary school and his little brother is about to start pre-K at the same school. I adore that school, the teachers, the administrators. My oldest is going into 3rd grade and he struggles with adhd, but I found that being involved and giving staff a heads up about issues or when he's had a particular tough morning, makes them just as willing to work with me and my son and he's just doing so well. The administrators are always out to greet the kids, they know them by name, the kids are always running to give teachers and admin hugs. They even know my 4 year old by name and hype him up about starting school in the fall. This is a public school and I love it. It is the main reason we don't want to move to a new, bigger, house. Because we adore this school. We definitely got lucky.

I work in a high school cafeteria. In a small town I’ve lived all my life! I know people’s kids and grandkids that go there. There are definite trouble makers but it’s not too bad. We still have drive your tractor to school, ffa and 4h. We are one of a few green schools in Maryland.

my daughter once got put on a phone restriction where she had to go to the assistant principal and turn in her phone every morning. She used an old phone of her friend's and admin had no idea. In my defense, neither did I until her punishment ended. Most of her punishments at that school were out of whack anyway

Graduated Highschool 4 years ago. (2020) When it came to the phones, the school I went to it depended on the teacher. Some had strict rules ( no phones at all: some even had a system where there was a place in the class room to put them up and you could get them after class) and some teachers literally didn’t care at all. Just as long as you were getting your work done. Can’t speak for other schools though.

I had a teacher who was no nonsense on hats, hoods, and ESPECIALLY laying your head down/hiding your face in class. Well I knew why, but others didn’t want to believe it. It’s bc a few yrs before I was in there, my sister had him as her teacher and a kid literally died when he put his head down on his desk in his hands. He was terrified he would lose another child and he wasn’t having it! Mr Darwin, thanks for looking out

I was told that the reason you can't wear a hat to school nowadays is because it's quote "easier to identify people" and I can see the reasoning behind that, but I also think it probably started as an etiquette thing back in the day.

The respect part probably still hits with plenty of teachers, but I wouldn't be surprised if identifying people is the main reason schools keep it in effect.

12:33 One reason for not allowing hats is that it adds one more clothing item to watch for inappropriate messages. Also, it can make it difficult to identify students on security cameras, and being able to identify students on camera can be a safety thing. Another reason is that it can lead to behavior issues--students taking the hats, throwing the hat off an upper level, tossing hats around the classroom or hall, etc. Many schools just find it easier to take away the temptation by not allowing hats at all.

I think the no hat in church situation comes from the old world when, hats/headdress were status symbols and they'd remove them in temple/church as a way to say no one has any standing before god or something like that.

I was lucky enough to go to a private school BUT.. if you called our awesome nun ladies without Mother, or Sister before their first names you would be in trouble! (I never disrespected the ladies ever..)All of the teachers told us to call them by their first names.. EXCEPT Mr. R! He literally would have a scary moment if anyone called him by his first name. Guess who did, and found out? ME! I never did it again. I have to add that Mr. R (Not his real last name of course.) Made my life a living HELL my entire 9th year. It didn't help that we only had 12 students in our class. Decades later, and I still remember you Mr. R. I hope you fealt good about singling out a 14 year old kid!

When I was an 8th grade middle school teacher, a student reported their phone was stolen, so several of us teachers decided to try and find it figuring that it was stashed somewhere. A couple female teachers checked the girl’s restroom, and they found a vibrator wrapped in a wash cloth in a plastic shopping bag in the ceiling above a stall. The phone was found in the boy’s restroom in the ceiling.

At my high school, we called all of our teachers by their first names. They worked differently than typical public high school, where it worked more like college. It totally depended on us on how quickly we wanted to graduate. I also graduated in 1999, so things were different then, and I know I'm old.
