Another great vid! I know you really like the Sevr and I am only sharing this again to inform viewers that it is the ONLY mechanical that I have had not fully deploy. Sent Sevr the pics of the holes through both lungs and explained that I luckily was able to watch the deer walk away and finally expire 30 min later, they sent me a refund and said it happens sometimes, I guess that is ok unless it is a trophy of a lifetime I wont take that chance... Not sure if it is the pivot getting stuck but it is of concern and the reason I wont shoot them again which is sad because they fly so well. I hope you don't get mad I just wish someone would have shared similar info with me before I purchased them because according to Sevr, I was not the only person it has happened to but they do have good customer support if they fail.

I’ve herd the same thing about the sevr heads I was so pumped on them too then a buddy got them and shot a field point hole in a deer found two days later almost 2.5mils away. I shoot the rage now and yea it has bent on all 3 animals I’ve taken but full deployment and full pass through. Elk mule deer and antelope
@trpe71
@trpe71 4 жыл бұрын
@@JTDTV-cu3gr I am sure most mechanical heads have a few bad stories, this is my first issue after 20 big game animals with mechanical heads. I had the issue with the 1.5 and I have to think it is either the pivot sticking to one side or the blade lock having the slanted edges that might allow for them to close with just the right impact, who knows but if they make one without the pivot and with a flat locking joint I will give them another try because they fly amazingly well. But the hole in the lungs was well under 1' so I would bet on the pivot being the issue. I wish them luck moving forward!

Lusk your videos allow us to have this platform to have this argument. I truly believe anything can happen with a expandable blade so many variables can change the way they perform. If your looking for a blade you can pick up and shoot over and over a expandable is the wrong choice but you want the biggest hole and cut it’s the right choice.

I know I’m late to this video but for whitetail hunting I am stuck trying to decide. As far as this style opening you prefer the sevr. For rear deploying I am considering the levi morgan shwacker and slick trick raptor trick. What opening style would you prefer? What is your overall favorite mechanical for whitetails? Thanks a ton for the videos!
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Shwacker and Raptor Tricks are front deploying. I prefer rear deploying as you are going to get at least one big hole. If you don't get a pass thru on a front deploying head, then you're only getting one small hole. My favorite mech for whitetails is the Sevr 2.0, 1.5 or Robusto--BY FAR.

John I really like your reviews. I have been thinking I want to switch from my Fixed Wacem to a Mechanical. The Sevr in any of the cutting diameter seems to test way above it competition. From what i can tell from many of the review I have seen they test the best (not just yours). So my question is if you had to pick one, would it be the SEVR or something else?

Sevr 1.5 by a long shot. Those things are the most durable mech ever made.
@carlosweaver6763
@carlosweaver6763 4 жыл бұрын
My only problem was with the cutting paper out of the box test, on the rage you cut halfways through the paper before you would stop. On the sevr it looked like it struggles to cut the paper at all and would stop as soon as paper broke. So the rage cut a lot more paper then the sevr before getting dull.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Well, rubbing the edges on a carbon shaft barely dulls these blades, so cutting an extra 1/4" of paper sure won't make a difference. But the Rage definitely cut the paper more effectively, until it lost its edge.

Took a doe with robusto yesterday. Clean pass through went about 60 yards. Nice trail. But the robusto was a bit dinged up. A little work and have it operating again. Don't know how realistic the steel plate test is for durability. One shot through deer and was much different than how it looked through steel plate. Did job though and like I said was able to straighten blade and sharpen tip and blades. Was with 415 fps centerpoint amped crossbow. Passed through at 15 yards and was laying on ground about 10 yards past deer. 440 grain total weight.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Very good to hear. The tests are not entirely designed to replicate hunting, but to show the outer limits of what a head can and cannot handle. What you hit on the animal and how you hit it and at what speed/weight you hit it can vary so much. A heavy bone hit at an angle can even be more damaging than a straight hit to concrete. So I think the tests give a good indication of the overall durability of the head in controlled, uniform testing.

I assume the Robusto is larger than the 2.0 at the end of the ferrule (where the ferrule meets the arrow)? If the robusto is used on an arrow for a compound bow does the size difference matter?
@LuskArcheryAdventures

The Robusto is actually more narrow; but it's heavier cause it's steel rather than titanium. I have a new test of the Robusto dropping in a week.

A year ago you said the Afflictor K2 was the best mechanical you've tested. How does the Afflictor K2 mini stack up to the new Sevr Robusto?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I love the Afflictor Hybrids--great heads. The Sevr 1.5 is the most durable mech I've ever seen--by far. It's the only mech to hold up to 5 shots thru a 22 ga steel plate and stay intact. Many fixed blade heads can't even do that. The Robusto is also very durable, but not as durable as the 1.5. They are both quite a bit more durable than the Afflictors. The Sevrs can handle a direct hit into cinder block very well. I shot the 1.5 into cinder block 3 times and it was still going strong. So for durability, the Sevrs get the nod. As for penetration, the Sevr 1.5 is about the same as the K2 Mini. I've taken animals with both and like both.

@@LuskArcheryAdventures Thanks for the reply John. I just purchased a Ten Point Vapor RS470 crossbow. With 458 grain arrows I'm shooting 435 fps. I have a bear hunt in a couple of weeks and I'm trying to find the best option in a mechanical broadhead for that hunt. I don't have time to test any fixed blades before the hunt. I just ordered the Sevr Robusto 150 grain and the Afflictor K2 150 grain. I think I'll probably end up going with the Robusto. I've been told by many that shooting a fixed blade broadhead at that speed you don't get very consistent accuracy because of planning. Magnus has done some KZbin videos with different results. I suspect it has a lot to do with the quality of broadhead your shooting. I plan to try Bishop Holy Trinity 200 grain and Scientific Method 315 grain. Also want to try Iron Will and Day Six EVO in heavier sizes. The theory being that a heavier/slower arrow won't plane as much or be affected by the wind as much, not to mention increased FOC and Mass. I can give up 50 fps or more, add FOC and Mass, and still have a pretty fast arrow. With your experience in archery and broadhead testing do you have any suggestions for me?

Hi John wondering if you have shot the Sevr 1.5 cut on any big game such as elk or moose? Also if you think the Robusto would hold up to an elk shoulder?
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
I've taken a Mulie and a Zebra (at 82 yds) with the 1.5--as well as deer and a Blesbok. I would be 100% confident using it on an elk or moose. My buddy just shot a caribou in Alaska last month with a 1.5 at 72 yds--complete pass thru and the head looked brand new. An elk shoulder has so many different parts to it and so many angles to it. It's impossible to say that any head would "hold up to an elk shoulder" 100% of the time, from every angle and at every point--just too many variables. But the Sevrs are designed to go around bone and they are THE most durable mech I've ever tested--by far. The 1.5 is the toughest.

I think the blades of the Sevr pivoting all the way back into the broadhead could cause a lot of cutting loss in a broadhead passing so fast through and animal that I would be worried the blades would not fully open back up before the broadhead started to exit the animal leaving only one blade to do the real damage to the organs of the animal instead of two fully opened blades. I have had good luck with the Rages but their blades break or bend badly on a regular basis. I only shoot animals broadside with the Rage as I have found that hitting some animals at a sharp angle causes the broadhead to not open both blades completely thus causing the arrow to pivot wildly when hitting an animal reducing penetration a lot. Just my observation over the years since Rage first came out.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, actually that's a non issue with the blades pivoting; the first pressure that any medium puts on that blade will slide it back into place immediately. I've seen the high speed vids of it doing just that.

I know this is an older video but used Sevr Robusto year before last, killed mature buck, one blade was slightly damaged but could not get the head back to folded position, last year 150 grain Rage Trypan zipped right through a 3 year old buck and stuck in the dirt, one blade broken. Both bucks dead. I guess I’d call it a tie as both were unusable but at least the Rage I could replace the blades, took the Sevr apart and there’s no way I could put back together? Too complicated and tiny washers inside. Also the blunt edges covering up the frontal cutting edges turned me off from future purchase, I want to try 150 Swhackers next(after I run out of 150 grain Rages)

You didn't focus on the sevr entrance hole which looks very poor compared tp the trypan's, like a swhacker not much damage to the head because there's not much damage to the target's entry point. Saw another video that showed that those dull little tabs will actually impact before the blades on the upper part. That will take away a tremendous amount of KE and cutting surface. It's not readily apparent unless you pay attention at about 5:22 on your video. Make sure those blades are pushed all the way back for your comparison. I really wanted to like them---that is a big design flaw though IMO.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've seen that video. And that can actually be a benefit. Sevr calls is "pre-stretch" cause those tabs press the hide in a bit and stretch it out before the blades hit it. SO when the blades hit, they make a cut wider in the hide than their diameter. I 've sen that happen in the field as well, on animals. In penetration testing, the Sevrs have actually performed very well, compared to other rear deploying heads. That test over a bucket with hide on it is only one way to view it. When a head is going at 280 fps, it's a non issue. So far I've shot a mule deer, two whitetails, a zebra and a blesbok with the Sevr 1.5 and it has performed perfectly. Most were pass thrus--except for the zebra, which was at 82 yards, and one Whitetail buck, as it was quartering to me and when thru a shoulder.

I left rage this year to run Iron will wides I hope it doesn’t bite me in the Bum. I like to hug right behind the Shoulder on deer often hitting the opposite leg behind or in front and with all that muscle I wasn’t getting full pass through on those heavy bucks. Hoping to remedy that with a better quality steel. And KE is not my issue, 284 FPS with a 496 grain arrow in hitting with 88.88 lbs KE. And .625 lugs Props to rage though when properly placed all deer were found.

That's awesome Elizabeth. You can shoot pretty much any head you want, with that bow. If your arrow is heavier, like around 400 gr or more, you will get even better penetration. But it should be at least 350. You can use the Sevr 1.5 really well or the Tooth of the Arrow 1" or the Magnus Black Hornet or the QAD Exodus. Any of those would be excellent choices, just to throw out a few.

Haha. No. I just stroke them all the same. I filmed them at different times and have figured out how I can do it without having the move the weights. When I did the Trypan, I was doing it the old way, but with the Sevr, and all of them in recent weeks, I do it the other way, cause it's faster. In both cases, the arrow weight is the only pressure on the edge.

The Sevr design has a flaw. The idea that the blade will "curve" around bone is a good idea but Deer aren't made like ballistic gel. Not all their organs have the same density. If the broadhead passes between the heart and lungs one blade will remain hidden. Even between the liver and lungs. This design flaw has caused people to almost lose their game.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Well, I hear you and understand what you are saying, but I believe you're overstating it the concern. The majority of mechs do not have blades that lock open. The blades open and retract constantly as the head encounters various levels of resistance. When there is greater resistance, the blades flare out and when there is less resistance, the blades retract. I've seen this with dozens of different mechs when I use a multi layered medium, with varying densities. When a soft layer is hit, the blades retract significantly. But at least with the Sevr, the blades lock into an open position. The only way they will not cut with that full cut is if there is great disparity in what one blade encounters compared to the other--and that rarely happens unless one blade hits bone. If it does happen, the opposing blades extends well beyond it's normal cutting length, and the resistance on the opposite blade immediately pushes the blade back to its open position as soon as that bone is past. I've found that overall, the holes cut with the Sevr are more consistent in their actual cut than those of most other mechs.

Why would anyone expect a thin bladed mechanical Broadhead to keep an edge or even undamaged blades after a shot? Might as well shoot an animal with a field point the second time if you want to use the same blades twice. Replace the blade or buy a quality fixed blade.
@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Well, it's not just about re use, it's about holding up throughout hard impacts on an animal. If one head loses a blade and one doesn't, then I know which one I'm going to use, regardless of re-use.

@LuskArcheryAdventures
@LuskArcheryAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard of that happening. While each of the parts are within tolerance, sometimes the combination of the variations can result in a bit of a rattle when in the closed position. If that happens, it's easily fixed by taking them apart and slightly bending the concave washer--that makes everything snug.

I personally shoot the Trypan's myself but it's been a double edge sword for exactly the reason shown here. Durability. If you hit any kind of bone, even rib cages, the blades will be bent. The old chisel tips and even the old Hypodermics didn't bend as easy as the blades om the trypan despite them being "thicker."

In the cut test, why were you holding the paper so close to the blades for the sever? You didn't do this with the rage. This makes it easier to cut. Also, the paper was bending before it cut the paper with the sever and not the rage. To me you demonstrated the blades are not as sharp. Secondly, you claim the severe blades are perfect and like new after the penetration test. Clearly both blades were chipped at the ends. While it did do better than the rage you seem to consciously, or unconsciously favor the robusto effecting how you test and review the broadlead. As a trained scientist, I stopped watching the video due to the inconsistencies between the comments and the way the test was being carried out. I will say I generally like and truly appreciate the time you take to review broadheads, so thank you for that. I will continue to watch and look forward to your videos. I am not a Rage fan boy

Well Kevin, thank you for watching and commenting. The Trypan blades were definitely sharper out of the package...but both cut paper, so they pass this simple test. I'm consistent on counting that as a cut in all of my tests. Not trying to be biased. The nicks in the Sevr blades you are referring to are not from the impact--they are there to hold the O ring in place and thus are there right out of the package.

Well, there’s a reason for that. I have used rage several times in the field. There are times they’ve done well and times they’ve not done well. But in my earlier years of testing, they were almost always the first mechanical to break. I like the design, and even the materials, but they could do a much better job at making a more durable. They don’t really care about that because they sell just fine now. That being said, I am testing to different rage models right now and they’re both actually doing quite well.
