this song works from a former best friend’s perspective too, not just an ex-boyfriend/girlfriend. that being said - the toxic ex-best friend could absolutely have the point of view of olivia here. the lyrics work, but at the same time the person that’s being sung about could very well be just a person who got out of a toxic situation. personally speaking here, i have an ex-best friend who showed me songs and told me jokes that i still use and show/tell to people. places that she and i would go to together and certain things we did i still do now with myself and with other people. i will always cherish the good memories that she and i shared together - because they were and are truly good memories - but that doesn’t excuse her toxic and borderline sociopathic behavior towards and at the end of our long and tumultuous relationship. she could absolutely have the perspective that olivia is singing from in this song when she thinks about me now and it would work - because she did show me those things and we did do those things together - but what she wouldn’t realize is that those are the positive aspects of our relationship that i took with me into my life following the dramatic and melancholic end of our friendship and those are the things that keep me from absolutely hating her soul. they are how i keep a neutral and balanced view of her.
