THANK YOU TONY, FOR US WHO DONT WELD MAYBE A THREADED PIPE / FLANGE MIGHT WORK. To change the light bulb, just unscrew the pipe from flange. Great information, Tony

Thank you Tomy for sharing your way of doing things. This an interesting video as I had never thought about bending material when playing Archtops - it is inspirational to me.

I made a similar one, it works but the 150watt lightbulb breaks after one use! Too expensive to keep replacing the bulb, I’m now trying a bbq charcoal starter.
@youtubecommentor44805 ай бұрын
Tommy, how do you prevent the light bulb from breaking due to the intense heat? I read that some luthiers have built similar type bending irons but the bulb keeps breaking?
@HovingtonInstruments5 ай бұрын
I never had any issues with my light bulbs. They last years before I have to replace them.. maybe better quality light bulbs..?🤷♂️ I’m not too sure. I never have to run it to the maximum intensity though .. that could be a reason

I see your video is already a few years old, but maybe you’ll see this and let me know... Do you turn the dimmer up all the way to max or is there a point somewhere in between where you stop-and how did you determine that point? Thx
@HovingtonInstruments5 жыл бұрын
I usually put it to max, but sometimes if I spend too much time at the Jig to test fit it gets a lot hotter, if I notice and burning on the wood ( appears like a brown tint on maple) I dial it down some. Very rare I have to play with it though.

What diameter pipe did you use? I watched the vid twice, maybe i missed it. Thanks for the idea, this one looks better than the others i watched!
@HovingtonInstruments7 жыл бұрын
James Alexander the light bulb fits just right in a 3 1/2" OD pipe.. wall looks like schedule 40 ... roughly 1/8" . Thanks for watching..

Cool Tomy! How hot does the light bulb contraption have to get to bend the wood properly?
@HovingtonInstruments9 жыл бұрын
It can get really hot, enough to burn the wood. I can get the same spray bottle results I've demonstrated in the video with the electrical one. The trick here is to have the wood thin enough for it to bend. I wouldn't be able to bend 1/4 thick in the guitar shape on this .its a good thing that a guitar side is thinner than 1/8...

Tomy: have you thought of heating the 1.5 inch pipe with a light bulb? Just curious if that would work.
@HovingtonInstruments5 жыл бұрын
Interesting question, I would be curious to find a bulb that would fit in there with enough watts to create the required heat. If so, it can totally be done.
@seasonedtoker7 жыл бұрын
These bulbs are hard to find these days in Europe. Where should I look for them? Those newer halogen types aren't powerful enough and they die quick. Tnx!
@HovingtonInstruments7 жыл бұрын
+seasonedtoker not sure.. maybe online, I got this one at Home Depot.. 3 or 4 years ago..

@@HovingtonInstruments I was going to ask you about this. It's almost impossible to find incandescent in Australia. Are they still available in North America? I have a step-down transformer that I might be able to use. :D

@Ateone817 жыл бұрын
Would it still work if you used a stainless steel pipe instead of aluminium?
@HovingtonInstruments7 жыл бұрын
I would think so. One of the advantage of aluminum is that it gets hot really quick. But Stainless would get hot to.
@eliotestrada4897 жыл бұрын
Was thinking do the same with my hit gun. Would work?
@HovingtonInstruments7 жыл бұрын
I don't think a heat gun would have the same results, but I never tried it...Thanks for watching..

How does a light bulb heat that thing up?
@HovingtonInstruments9 жыл бұрын
When a light bulb is on it gets really hot and because aluminum conducts heat the pipe gets hot too.

+Tomy Hovington but how does the light bulb get that hot?
