Confused. How do you make a strong bond when glueing two surfaces of end grain together in this situation? Humidity or not. Wouldn’t it make a weak joint? BTW, not a luthier, guitar repair guy, just love your video content. I drink it up for knowledge and fun. You do a superb job at this. Amazed that you can do this on top of lutherie. Please keep it going and I hope that the ads I have to watch before one of your segments are paying you well. At least well enough to keep doing it. Grand master guitar repair pro, guitar historian, witty…ummm, You are a wizard sir! Thank you!

It's a graft so there is a gluing surface behind the material. You are correct though you could never glue end grain to end grain together and expect strength or adhesion longevity. I build custom electric guitars but I'm assuming the back of the guitar where the sides meet and are glued to the end block get paired away leaving enough room for the graft but still enough side material left glued to the block to maintain structural integrity. I could be mistaken like I said I build solid bodied guitars I'm just making a theoretical guess!

Summary: The video discusses the process of removing tape from an end graft and reflects on the choice of materials and woodworking philosophy. Traditional end grafts were made of ivory or plastic, but modern luthiers often use solid wood, which introduces complexity due to grain direction considerations. Unlike other woodworking practices, guitar makers often deal with cross-grain glue-ups, but the end graft allows a choice in grain direction. In classical guitar making, it's common to glue the end seam with the grain running longitudinally or perpendicular to the grain of the sides. However, for larger end grafts, the grain may run parallel to the sides to prevent potential issues with shrinkage. The luthier emphasizes building guitars to withstand varying humidity and temperature conditions, recognizing that professional musicians subject instruments to diverse environments.

For a moment there I thought my cat had somehow jimmied the door to my office. Not that I mind her being in here, but I keep the door closed so I'm not heating the entire basement.

I think you’re very talented and bright. Design a brace system that resists or prevents belly bulge and still allows great acoustics. I’ll visit you at your new home on your own tropical island.
