My daughter went to Korean school and when they heard her speak Korean, the elders were very taken in by her. They loved working with her when it came to traditional korean inki and brush writing. The elderly women would argue with each other on who was going to be her teacher for the day. When she went in to be tested in her language skills, she thought she was a beginner but she tested as an advanced student, Where did she learn the language? She learned from dramas and she learned Hangul writing from her Tae kwon do Masters and their parents. She is a 3rd degree black belt, working on becoming a master herself.

I obviously cant talk from my own personal experience but I went with my friend to Korea back in 2021 for 6 weeks and she's black and she had no issues really when she was there! the only thing was a couple of nightclubs didn't let her in but there are plenty that are supper friendly to everyone! I'm aware visiting for 6 weeks isn't a huge amount of time but hope this helps!

@@Snowingslow-k._.I’ve spent about 7 weeks total in Korea over 3 separate trips, just got back from my last one last week. I’m a Southeast Asian, deeply tanned girl. If you’re asking if there’s colorism, I am gonna have to say yes. Definitely more than I ever experienced in neighbouring Japan or Taiwan. It’s not quite overt for the most part, but I’ve had a few unpleasant run-ins that I could have done without.

I lived in Seoul for a few months in 1997-1998, playing with a singer named Lee Seung Hwan. We did a tour, which was actually in Seoul except for one or two shows. I really enjoyed meeting the Korean people. I guess that would be "old" music today. I loved the food. Seung Hwan and our other hosts would take us to American restaurants at first, but we told them we always ate Korean food when we were out on our own, they started to take us to Korean restaurants that they liked. I think it is exactly as you said--that they were afraid we would not like Korean food. But most Americans from larger cities are familiar with all types of Asian food, and enjoy eating the authentic versions when traveling!! Good luck with your channel.

Dan, I think you shared a lot of great tips for people not just visiting Korea but interacting with Korean-Americans in the USA. I have been married to a beautiful Korean lady for 48 years and even lived in Korea for 5 years. I enjoy good Gugak (Song So-hee in particular) and Trot music. While I can't eat the strong spicy food there is plenty I like. Before I ever went to Korea for the first time I studied the history and traditions and also the concepts and ideas of Confucianism because I was informed that if you understand that I would understand much about Korean society.

Danny, you are an amazing person. I've recently gotten hooked onto K-Dramas and Chinese dramas. I have many Korean friends here in California who've shared their favorite local dishes with me that I've grown to love. I'm Hawaiian, Chinese and Portuguese. Being from Hawai'i, I grew up eating all types of Kimchi and can't get enough of it. This segment is my first introduction to your channel. I believe that everyone should respect and honor people of all cultures, especially our elders. I've learned many basic words and phrases, and my friends enjoy me using them. Mahalo plenty for sharing your information with us.🌺🤙❤️

I am 72 and wished I had a better memory, so I could learn more of the language, while watching the shows. I do recognize many phrases when they are spoken though, which makes me happy. Thank you for having such a wonderful channel, especially for K-drama lovers like myself.

New to your channel! Congrats on the 100k subscribers! I think 1) respecting your elders and 2) respecting the culture of the country you're visiting should be common courtesy. I'd love to try some Korean food when I visit, but as much as I like a little spice, I can't handle the real spicy food. I love Korea, when I watch any historical dramas of the Joseon Dynasty or early 1920s-1930s, I always research later because I want to understand how much of the drama was based on true historical facts and this way I learn more about the history of your country. I love learning about other cultures, languages and food and comparing to see the similarities as well as the differences in our cultures.

I agree with you on how one should always show respect to elders...but want to add that respect should always be shown to others, no matter the age. And I am the same as you, I love researching historical facts while watching historical dramas. I feel immensely thankful for the chance to get a window to other contries traditions and history via the internet. (When I was growing up (I am 67), one had to go to the library to search from the limited supply of books on various matters. BTW, I love kimchi, korean chicken and more.....hmmm, and mageolli ☺
@Surftouka

@@linda.s.gisladTotally agree that respect should be given to anyone regardless of age. I'm also 67, well until September. I'm grateful for the internet that we have so much information at our fingertips. I'm Greek American living in Greece, though I've gotten used to the metric system, I'll say google helped especially at converting recipes. You can search anything...my phone had a problem and I found the answer online. I bought a bread maker here that had various languages but didn't have English, so I searched and found the English instruction manual. Going to the library was fun because I loved reading, but of course had limits.

Hi Dan, thank you so much for the videos. You inspired me to visit Incheon a few weeks ago where some lovely things happened. I went to have lunch near Jayu Park and was enjoying a hangover soup in a restaurant. Halfway through my meal, an Ajumma, who I hadn't spoken to at all, decided to pay for my lunch! Now that I've seen your video (1st point) I think I know why she paid for my meal. The other nice thing was when I was looking at the Tri-bowl, another Ajumma who worked at the Tourist centre started chatting and she took me out for dinner too! Incheon is definitely a place to visit. Thank you for all the travel tips Dan 🙂

Hi Dan, I trust this message finds you in good spirits. Congratulations on crossing 100,000 subscribers 🎉🎊 I wanted to take a moment to express my recent fascination with the captivating portrayal of Korean culture in Kdramas. Despite their fictional nature, these dramas consistently highlight values of decency and integrity, often in contrast to certain depictions in Western movies. The characters in Kdramas frequently embody admirable morals and principles, making the viewing experience truly enriching and inspiring for me. I dream of visiting Korea one day to fully immerse myself in its rich culture, witness its stunning beauty firsthand, and indulge in its delicious cuisine. During a time when love and admiration of another culture can be considered cultural appropriation and angrily looked down upon, it’s heartwarming to know that many Koreans understand and may even approve of foreigners who have great respect and adoration for their culture, and feel blessed to be able to take part in some of their traditions, foods and language. I think it’s another way of spreading the love!

Thanks for sharing Dan. Thank you very much for your advices. I think it is really very important to behave well in a foreign country, whether by learning a few words (hello, good evening, thank you...) or by respecting customs (for example in South Korea). South people queue to enter public transport). We must not forget that we are the ambassadors of our own country!

Congrats, Danny 100,000 subscribers 🫰you look cute n smart in your black n white attire 🤍I love my food as well specially my mums cooking🫰I agree with you how parent love to see you eat well 🌺🤍🫰this will be my first trip to Japan n Korea next month, and I'm looking forward to it. I'm a kdrama fan my first fav "Crash Landing On You" Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin loved it 🫰I was hooked on kdrama🌺🤍 trying to learn the basic words n the pronunciation as well. And looking forward to trying out the traditional hanbok (Choson-ot), I seen it in kdrama but only wear it at weddings? I also love the hanbok in the historic kdrama "captivating king" the queen wore beautiful hanbok the colour with gold just beautiful. Keep up the video 🌺🤍🫰gamsahabnida

Now I know why my Korean friends were giggling when I ate their home made kimchi with gusto. They're very impressed to know that i can make kimchi, kimbap, bulgogi, jeongol, and japchae. 😋😋😋 I'm learning all the time. 🤩👍🥰

Wise points to think over. They can also apply to other countries and other cultures! Just be respecting, caring and sweet to any nice people anywhere on this planet and you may make easier connections.
