I love how crazy and energetic the cowboy bebop universe is, but at the same time there’s brief periods where you don’t know the story of so many perspectives and you’re kind of lost in this big space world with nothing but 4 people. That speaks more loneliness than having just one character’s journey

Men only think about the past right before their death. As if they were searching frantically for proof that they were alive. -Jet Black, 2071
@hafsaaleem56883 жыл бұрын
Wow, I read this just as Spike went, "I was going to find out if I'm really alive". Really puts it into perspective, he thought about his past his whole life, and he needed to go back to feel alive. He was always looking back, and maybe he did feel alive in his final moments, but doesn't change the fact that he spent his life trying to convince himself he was alive without ever moving on and making a new story of his own. The Syndicate and his past relationships left a lasting mark on him, and that's all he ever defined himself by. It's so strange especially considering how static a character he is. I guess you could say he didn't have much character development, but the story was so perfect that his static character made sense, and is so loved because of the truth and bits of reality he holds. Sometimes, it's people's destiny to never move on. So in that sense, Spike didn't just think about the past right before his death, he chose his past to be his demise.
@BB-qs7rl3 жыл бұрын
@@hafsaaleem5688 But it wasn't his demise. It was his transcendence. He finally saw Julia as his present and his soul ascended into the heavens.

@@hafsaaleem5688 You can see it both ways. But in Spike's final scenes there are songs about everlasting love and the afterlife, Spike seeing Julia as his present, glowing white lights and flying birds. It's pretty obvious what is being implied.

Wow it sounds so meaningful, until you realize that statement is just not true lmao. The entire series is full of sayings that appear to be deep but are outright false or extremely shallow. It's pretentious, bad writing
@oscarnav82 жыл бұрын
When you see the series you expect an episodical slice of life action anime, where everything happens and absolutely nothing backfires in the next episode. You feel like these characters could be there forever, following their arc cycle (Faye going away, Jet staying alone in the Bebop, Spike trying to get himself killed), but no. These dudes have lived enough; Faye is close to being 80, Jet has countless stories with the police and Spike had a bloody past before. Therefore, they won't be here for long; so when you become attached to the anime, when you feel you can stay watching them forever, the final episode comes up, just after 26 episodes, and Spike dies. That's when you notice you weren't watching a compelling story, a great purpose, a big mission; you were just seeing the last days of a doomed man. During those days, he meets some people, but in the end, his ending is already written. His days have already expired, now he's living his last nightmare after waking up alongside the woman of his dreams. This is why this series is incredible... it's too unique.

The real meaning of Cowboy bebop is in acceptance of the unexpected things in life. Life can get pretty fucked up at times but you always have the final say on how you are going to react. You might feel otherwise but the reality is that things just happen to you, no rhyme or reason. You get to decide how you're gonna take it, and what your next step will be. When things go wrong or I'm faced with a seemingly insurmountable hardship, sometimes, I look in the mirror and say to myself; "Whatever happens, happens..." as a Taoist reminder to go with the flow. It's pretty good, actually. 😌
@darrenfleming790111 ай бұрын
absolutely, and it also shows that even though people get stuck in the past even to the point that they can't even see their present, life will still push you along no matter what, and whether or not you're aware of it, even if you think your life is empty, the present is always there with you, just sometimes you can't seem to see it. It is very Taoist when you think about it.

Spike died. His death was foreshadowed since episode one. Just within the last ten minutes of the final episode (including the end credits), the tiger striped cat story made it clear that he wasn't coming back. Jet knew it. Faye knew it. Spike knew it. The song that plays immediately after Spike leaves the Bebop, starts thinking about Julia and then attacks the syndicate is literally about how he will love Julia forever and be with her in the afterlife. He even says to Vicious "Julia passed away. Let's end it all." He kills Vicious but is slashed across the stomach. Vicious dies quickly, Spike slowly because a snake's venom poisons slowly after the bite. After Vicious falls dead on the ground, Spike looks up to the night's sky. The camera focuses in on his right eye. He sees Julia. He is finally seeing her in the eye that sees the present. Meaning she is now his present. He is immediately covered in a white heavenly light. Next we see him it is day and he is now smiling. He says "Bang." drops and is never shown moving again. Spike saying "Bang." is a call back to Wen and Spike acknowledging that he now understands the relief that comes with death. We follow the ascension of his soul into the heavens while a song about ascending to heaven plays. We see the same doves that flew by Julia when she died, fly over Spike. We see Spike's star fade, but never fall. Meaning that he made it to the great spirit that awaits us all.

Too much symbolism analysis for me. I don't give a damn if Spike died; What I care about is that his story concluded. He found Julia and saw her die, and finally ended Vicious and the rest of the Red Dragons who made up his pre-Bebop life. The loose ends have been burned. It doesn't matter if Spike himself died, or just the 'old' Spike who's stuck in the past; But Cowboy Bebop is over. No continuations, no sequels, no cliffhangers. That being said, dude's definitely dead. Too many hints to that end, and the creator's statements to the contrary were probably just to calm people down.

In the story, Spike seemed to never fear death despite almost dying in many situations. We saw this as just him being brave or living a life that accepts fate unconditionally. The last episode finally revealed that he was bothered at how carefree he is when faced with certain death. In a way, you can say fearing death is part of being alive. To not fear death made Spike question if he was really alive. He wanted to find out, and what better way than to confront his past, the one thing that was sure to kill him.

I mean it's never explicitly stated but to me the Bebop crew became family, Fate, she spends this whole time with the Spike and the others thinking she's out of place running away and trying to find peace with her past. Thanks to the crew she gets knowledge of her past and thinks it will give her some meaning but like she says "There was no place left for me to return to" is very telling for how the story unfolds, Spike is a man that should have died twice already in his pursuit of chasing what the past means to him through Julia, you can see it in how his personality entirely shifts the moment even her name comes up. Spike tells Faye "Forget the past it doesn't matter" because he knows what pain not being able to live in the present causes. When spike talks of his eyes one seeing the present and one seeing the past it's always been interesting to me and reminds me a lot of a Gurren Lagann quote from Kamina that was cut from the English dub and is really hard to find a direct quote of in English but I'll paraphrase how I remember it. "Do you know why god gave us eyes in the front of our heads Simon?, If we had eyes in the back of our heads we'd only see our homes getting further away, God gave us eyes in the front of our heads so we can look forward to the future." I think this quote really plays off the idea of being stuck in the past like the bebop crew and how those who can't forget their past are damned to longing of their homes lost to time. This is why Faye shoots the roof in an attempt to bluff to keep Spike from leaving, because the bebop crew is her future, it's truly something they all should have been doing, looking to the future to make a life for themselves instead of looking to the past as their homes dissipated into nothingness. First Jet with his ex-wife and the pocket watch frozen in time there was no place for him to return to. Just like Faye we when we look to the past we have nowhere to return to, the past is the past because it's gone, that's why it's so tragic when spike says "I'm going to find out if I'm really alive" because we all know why Spike is leaving, he's attempting to go out in a blaze of glory because now that Julia is dead, he too has no place to return to, and that's why Faye knows he's not coming back, because her and Jet decided to let the past go, where as Spike, he lives the way of Bushido and can't let his past go, he must die for his Lady and do what's right. tl;dr I'm a massive fucking nerd and I've watched this show like 15 times

The thing about Cowboy Bebop is that the meaning of the show changes as you get older. If you watched it 5 years ago, give it another watch. Last year? Another watch. Everything in this show is about internilizing what hurts us, and grinding out the man-hours to put some beef in that bell peppers and beef. Its more relivant as you grow up. Cowboy bebop really taught me the values of belonging. How once someone finds where they truly belong what ever the conditions may be you'd still find happiness. All the adventures and memories you make and take along the way wouldn't be as important of you're not having it with the right people, the people you belong with. People subconsciously know when they don't belong whether it be friends, groups, places, home, family. So you feel isolated eventhough you are surrounded by many people, you feel homeless despite having a place to eat, sleep, live. It is when you actually find where you belong, you feel satisfied and truly happy.
